And it's a postal stationary cutout I paid over $400 for. It is not a 7b at all. I was misled. Suffice to say I will be having a friendly chat with the owner of the auction house in the near future. Smauggie, I hope you don't mind my asking, but how did this turn out? Did the owner of the auction house do right by you?

Looks better than it is .... Mark Bloxham and myself spent some time checking this and it is a good forgery ... Looks the part but offered on my site for what it is at a fraction of what it would have cost ...

Are these regarded as classics ? The Wembley issues from 1924 and 1925 (latter not shown) ? It has just been pointed out to me on Facebook that the 1d value has the 'Tail to 'N'' variety !! How did I miss that ? Too many hours with stamps I guess !

One of my favourite sets, I have them in blocks of 4, but I still haven't got a Tail on N!

Stan ( stainlessb), I think you have lost your way and have taken Jon ( blaamand) with you. You are now posting classic GB in the classic France thread. Perhaps you can move these?

Received today with a small lot of Penny Reds and some blues (I was mainly interested in the penny plack and a couple of postmarks on the reds...) The embossing doesn't show up well in the scan, but it's very defined, unfortunately I do not see the VR watermark... so this could be a "facsimile/forgery" and who desn't need another Pennt Black- and will 4 margins! Leaning towards Plate 5 based on lower left A

Stan, if I might venture a comment on your two latest items please?
The Embossed stamps were printed one by one and the spacing was erratic to say the least. Three clear margins are scarce and four wide margins without part of an adjacent stamp are in the realms of great rarity..........so to find one with enormous margins all round makes one question its authenticity.
The V R watermark ought to be quite visible especially on a “mint” example. If you can’t see it then I believe there is no doubt it is a reprint
The Black looks nice but I’m going to suggest it is plate 1b. Not plate 5 . The A is slightly skew, has a weak left leg and lies right of centre. The G has a rotation heads down to the right and is located highish and left of centre.

Yes, i assumed the Six Pence was "too good to be true' as I wouldn't expect such a "beauty" to be lumped in with other stamps....more like "bait". It is a bery nice reprint, the embossing is excellent, but I've tried fluid and various colored light and there is no watermark
Plate 1b- i will have to go back through- the examples I could find did not seem to have the skewed crossbar nor the weak left foot- but I am very new at trying to plate the earliest Penny stamps (Black or Red). thanks for your insight! Can you recommend references- I have SG specialized, but it seems unless i have the letter combination of the examples it's not all that helpful- and I have th elink for the plate Project (or something like that, I'm not on my home computer at the moment)

I haven’t worked out how to present a link here as I have not yet had a need. However using google “plating penny black” look for “www.spink.com/private-treaty/nissen-reconstruction#EA” that illustrates all the letter combinations plate by plate. the key word is Charles Nissen , not Nissan..which is the car manufacturer NISSEN

Thank you! I will book mark and I have registered and I'm awaiting confirmation!
I have seen the Nissen images on another sight but they are too small to be of great help (and not in the same format)
To insert a link - click on the icon that looks like the earth with a page to the right side (on my browser it is in between the horizontal rule button and the Email button)
after clicking on it a window will pop up with a default name of "link" and then a second line for the address
Cheers!

Looks OK Rene , but I wonder why that link spells the man’s name wrong, he was Charles NISSEN not NISSAN. The images on the Spink site are crisper, sharper than on this site which are just a bit fuzzy on my screen. Useful comparison however as NIssen himself had some mistakes.

Today I received Harold Fisher The Plating of the Penny volume IV (it's a start) but thus far I can't make hide nor hair of it or the downloadable e-gauge ?? I'm beginning to think just using Nissen as a guide may be the best method, but obvioulsy a great deal of effort was put into the above referenced efforts.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I could not find a Paquebot thread so I decided to post here rather than start a new thread. This cover is a bit rough but worth keeping. It would appear that an airmail sticker fell off that would have held the rest of the postmark and ship identity. I could not find a Cunard White Star Line ship name ending with 'TOM' or 'TON' from this era. It was mailed on 9 SEP 1947 to Timmins, Ontario.

Hugh, that's a Port of Arrival postmark for Southampton on the south coast of England. The flags on the reverse indicate a Cunard White Star Line ship. Daniel

So, what do we think? Did it reach Ontario via Airmail? Why no backstamps? Did it.... 1. Receive strike aboard white star vessel (see #13) Paquebot / posted at sea 2. Took the receival cancel #7 (Southhampton Paquebot) (Port of Arrival hammer) Then onwards via Airmail? Would 1/- (One Shilling, be correct Air rate?)

Well rod222 it is in Ontario now so that is a pretty good indicator... . In the mess there are also 3 other covers from the UK to Timmins from the same era with no back stamps so that appears to be normal for at least that city post office. Of these badly beat up covers the only one of slight interest to me is the one with the 1947 Royal Wedding fancy London cancel.

Note the posted picture shows two covers with 2½d stamp and one with a 1/- stamp that has an airmail label.

It's a machine cancel probably from Southampton Docks Post Office. The Airmail rate to North America in 1947 was 1/- per half ounce. Daniel
