There is no sub-forum for Guatemala in the Central America forum, so I'll post this question here. Meanwhile perhaps the terrific folks in Admin can create a sub-forum and move this thread there. But here's my question. I have this MH 1902 Guatemala Official stamp which catalogues (Scott 2014) at $12 (admittedly the hinge will bring the price down a bit). Scott has a footnote that states that counterfeits exist. Can any of you experts help determine if this stamp is legit or not? As an interesting quirk of my collecting habits, if the stamp is real I will be selling it, if it's a fake, I'd be happy to keep it (something about me and fakes, I don't know...) What do y'all think? Thanks in advance.

An easy stamp to fake. As you probably know, the following web site shows one that purports to be genuine: catalogue.klaseboer.com/vol2/html/guate2.htm. Likely the "weave" of the paper would be telling. Yours looks the same as the one on the website.

Thanks for the response stoltzpup. I've done another search and according to this web site... stampforgeries.com/forged-stamps-of-guatemala/...my stamp is a fake. Scroll toward the bottom of the page. The corners of the frame should not be joined and the 'fi' of Oficial should be joined together. Guess it goes in my burgeoning forgery collection.

Absolutely. I don't mind fakes, they have their uses oftentimes they keep a good value as well. All part of the hobby, nice to have them exposed.

The real stamps are fairly common unused, but used stamps are scarcer, and, scarcest of all are used offically on cover. I have a full set of these. There is a great discussion on these official stamps in the Robson Lowe G-2 Guatemala catalog.
