I think it is actually 3. OMB in the postmark. OMB stands for "Ombæringsnummer" = Delivery number.
But I agree that megabytes would have been much more fun

Stamps worked their magic this weekend; saved me. I only focused on Ukraine ninety per cent of the time.
And lo and behold what came in--cheaper than expected--from Auktionshuset; the single most complicated piece of distractingly wicked pre-UPU scribble-monster promsing to drive me bananas. This and two more from 1842-43, Geneva to a member of the von Bülow clan in Gudow, then still southern-most Denmark, until Bismarck/Prussia rolled in twenty years later.
Ten handwritten charges, four currencies (I'm guessing). This thing will keep me out of trouble for a while.

Hi Aaron kasvik that “busy” cover is a nightmare to keep track of rate charges. So to make things a little easier , are there any date stamps on the back to help figure the routing.? the one on the front is not clear But seem to read. AUSBAC.. H? VON ZURICH. the Swiss Cantons did not get common currency until after Confederation in 1848 and monetary reform in 1850 so I guess at least two markings must be within Switzerland. Geneva and Zurich using different currency then a conversion showing the postage due to each section of the route

The Comtesse obviously had me in mind 180 years ago when she saved these. I'm still working on a census of all the charges. Then I'll divide the Swiss, German states/cities and Denmark components. You'll be hearing from me.
You're right; at least two Swiss currencies, three in Germany, plus Denmark. Going through Zurich was unusual. Usually these went direct to Basel and north. Right, at least two Swiss charges, and usually a split charge at Basel with part for Baden.
Partially the problems are pre-treaty informality. The system was being tested. Everyone was learning how to do this; senders and post offcies alike. I'm looking forward to getting the letters and reading. A big philatelic advantage of folded letters is the contents are integral.

Aaron ( kasvik ), as this is a stampless cover, would you like me to move your post and any responses and create a new thread for Denmark Covers or Denmark Stampless Covers? Alternatively, I can just leave it where it is or I can revise the existing thread name to include both stamps and covers. Opinions are welcome from any members, but Aaron, I will give you some priority on this, as it is your post and responses that would be moved. Please let me know if you have a preference.
Edit: I looked back through, and I see that there are already covers previously posted, so I have revised the thread name. Aaron ( kasvik), if you would like a separate thread for stampless covers, just say so, and I will make it happen. If you are expecting more of this kind of material, it might be nicer to have it in its own thread.

A nice letter with an interesting history. However Gundow in the duchy of Lauenburg was not a part of Denmark. The duchy was ruled in personal union by the king of Denmark, but was a part of the German Confederation. Similar as Britain, what was ruled by the prince elect and later kings of Hannover till 1837.
When stupid danish nationalists (stupid, because the so grossly underestimated the power of the prussian army and overestimated that of Denmark´s forces) tried to incorperate Lauenburg, together with Schleswig and Holstein
into the danish state, what gave Bismark the pretext "to solve the problem". It was indeed an action, taken by the German Confederation, let by Austria and Prussia. By the way,the danish king, himself of german descent, opposed the danish actions to annex the german territories.

To be sure, the von Bülow family is Prussian. I take cover behind the address below in this, another letter from the same correspondence. I snagged three of 'em at auction Sunday. Someone--maybe a post clerk--was confused too, calling the place Denmark. Also note the charges; much the same route, but rather different. Gotta love it.

Lauenburg and Moelle or Molln Effectively used the Danish post, and from 1853 Danish 4 RBS and 4 Sk were valid for postage in both. They were issued with Numeral cancels 148 and 149 respectively. Until the war of 1864, so whether Danish or German, the duchy used the Danish post.

When this beauty (1912 Denmark Sc #82 General Post Office Copenhagen) arrives, I will have completed another page of its classic album - René But will you actually have completed the page.? There are two printings on different watermark papers plus there is the variant (which I think this) is with F instead of E in Kobenhavn …. So you need three stamps for completion I am afraid.

Denmark Scott #82 is Watermarked 113 and Perf= 13 - This is the stamps I chose to buy and it will complete my page (I will scan it when it arrives) Denmark Scott # 135 is the G.P.O. Type of 1912 but issued in 1915 and Perf= 14X14 1/2 - did not buy it for now as my other page will not be completed with it The 3rd stamp....82V...as seen on Ebay and Hipstamp.as you describe well........probably in another Catalogue as Scott Specailized 2021 does not mention it (which does not surprise me) ! Thanks Alex and I do not mind that you come back with the details I do not have (moneywise as on both sites, >US300 !! if you find a cheaper copy ). We are here to share knowledge and business and I know you probably are not impressed with SCOTT !!! I am not too - René

Our friend vikingeck (Alex) gave me some precious info on a Variant of this stamp which I name #82V (Scott does not list it) and one copy is available on Hipstamp - However listing is not satisfactory - seller says VF but it is Fine and claims Scott gives it a US$500 CV - Scott does not even list it - So I requested a high resolution scan to document the variant (see previous post). Does any member have a copy of this stamp or know where one can get one at a reasonable price ? A repeat of the copy I am waiting to arrive: #82 (not 82V)

Our friend vikingeck (Alex) gave us some precious info on 1 Variant of this stamp which I name #82V (Scott does not list it) . The copy I have is the equivalent to Scott's # 82 - All other catalogues consulted (AFA and FACIT) have their numbering system and CV. # 135 is also a Scott number which I just bought. #82 #135 is from the 1915s and I recently acquired a specimen for my collection - it will appear after this new info I received from research: VARIANTS: Four variants are commonly known, first and foremost the error '' COPENHAGEN '', which is mentioned in the ordinary AFA catalog, and in addition three errors mentioned in the AFA Special Catalog: "Defective penultimate N in POST BUILDING", "Seagull in front of left 5" and "Color spot in right post corner". The author is not familiar with. who has found these errors, but KJØBFNHAVN has been known and collected for a very long time and is mentioned in Hagemann's book from 1951. while the other three errors appear in the AFA Special Catalog 1981-82. it has not arrived yet to give you a good scan and place it on another completed page. Guilty of using "Quote" too much in this thread but I had to make some points clear, i.e. there exists more than 1 variant of the 1912 stamp shown many times which I am not going to buy (decision done yesterday) as AFA and Facit do not even agree on the variants - Instead I put $25 on a 1915 which should arrive in a few days but did show a "snip" of AFA with its methodology etc. Denmark must not be a primary collector's haven as I do not see a discussion like COGH stamps has (wonderful !! btw). You will also note that I do not challenge other members' opinions on this stamp - welcome any discussion or impression ! René

I've finally started making my custom pages for Denmark. Here's the draft page for the GPO issue, as posted above by renden. The image quality is poor as it was simply generated as a jpg from Powerpoint, but it gives an idea.
