Interest Piece : Faroes.
SN20/2 FAROE ISLANDS Feb 1973
"Stamp Collecting" (UK) reports as follows on the emergence of a new stamp issuing country in Scandinavia - the Faroe Islands: The Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Mr. Atli Dam, has anounced that his country, which for long has had its own flag and bank-notes (but Danish coins are used), is soon to issue its stamps as well.
The only Faroese stamps, so far, are some locally overprinted and bi-sected Danish stamps, used during temporary shortages when under British occupation in the two world Wars. The islands' Lagting, which is probably the world's oldest parliament pre-dating even the Icelandic Alting, has now Instructed the government of this country of 40,000 inhabitants which has a large amount of internal self-government, but is represented by Denmark abroad, to examine and report as soon as possible on the question of Faroese stamps.
"If we cannot have our own stamps under the present system, then we will take over the islands' postal service which is now run by Denmark," said Mr. Dam. "Our treaty with Denmark allows, and a majority in our parliament would support, such a measure. Our situation is not the same as on Greenland, where the postal service is run by a company, the Royal Greenland Company. We could issue our own stamps today, if we inscribed them with "Denmark" as well as "Faroe Islands" but we only want the name of our country on our stamps, and therefore there are certain international conventions which must be taken into account. This takes some time, for we have many other prob1ems, but we do not overlook the advantages in having our own stamps: they could e our country and our products, and we also hope to modest profit on them if we pursue a sensible issuing policy.

My all-time favourite Faroes stamps. Same with Greenland, I have an almost complete collection from 1975-1990. I may collect after that, but just cant see paying as much as dealers want for most. I just bought the DAKA GF10 2017 edition catalog. It is a wealth of info for the Faroes.

The BBC website has published an article today containing stories of the people of the Faroes who are connected to the postal service. I hadn't realized that some of the inhabited islands have absolutely tiny populations. Ryan

I had missed some that were off-screen the first time around. That would be a great place to live, although I'd be praying that my latest stamp order coming in wouldn't end up in the sea!

The Faroe Island stamps are attractive and relevant. Love the St Brendan story Saintin the Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis (Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot) of the ninth century. Many versions exist that narrate how he set out on the Atlantic Ocean with 16 monks ) to search for the Garden of Eden. Brendan is primarily renowned for his legendary journey to the Isle of the Blessed

I collect Faroe Is, Aland and Greenland. Lovely stamps and same great work by Slania as mentioned above.
What I really appreciate is that their stamps truly depict the local themes. I haven't come across any stamps from them showing Michael Jackson or Abe Lincoln. That way I can learn a lot more about them and their lives.
Ram.

ramanandn - Very good reasoning, absolutely agree! Any stamp-issuing nation should behave likewise.

I’ve started collecting these countries as well, especially for the reasons you’ve mentioned. I was looking at the Aland Post website just last night. I don’t want to hijack anyone’s secrets, but where might I find stamps from these areas?

Åland is an autonomous region of Finland where most inhabitants speak Swedish. Stamps for Åland are listed at the end of the Finland category in Scott's catalogs. For Faroe Islands and Greenland stamps, check for dealers selling stamps of Denmark. The stamps of these countries have separate listings in the Scott's catalogs.

Faroe Islands Cinderellas - Savings stamps? Social Insurance? Translates as “Free Time Badges” ? Anyone know the usage for these? According to Northwind Stamps, they are Vacation Savings Stamps issued between 1953 and 1977. "Vacation savings stamps were issued for employers' use in paying workers their earned vacation time. The stamps were put into special books and redeemed for cash at the post office as employees went on holiday. By law, the stamps had to be redeemed in the same year as they were earned." They seem to be quite rare. Daniel

Thank you daniel ! Interesting concept. So “used” might be those in one of the special books I suppose. Probably. In the UK we had a similar situation for Civil Engineering workers who, by the nature of their working on different major projects for different companies, also had to buy special holiday stamps. See my post here also, see this link for Northwind Stamps (click on the stamps for more info and prices). Daniel

There were 11 printings of that 2nd issue, from 1953-1977. Most listed in my 2017 Data catalogue show "xx" for price. There's two pages devoted to the Vacation stamps. I can scan them if you like, Terri (philatelia )

I’ll have to google it asap. Hmmm I didn’t find anything - would you kindly add a bit more of the info on that catalog please? Thanks!

Another good mail day! This set completes my used Faroes collection through the 2000’s. Yay! I know the #1 overlaps the other stamp, the centering is so so, perfs are tolerable, and i see a spot of toning but I liked the cancel and the juxtaposition next to the same stamp sans overprint and the price was right. So good enuf! Quoting with image to move to Faroe Islands thread.

philatelia ‘s Faroes provisionals cover emergencies from both World Wars. In 1919 Denmark increased the inland letter rate from 5 ore to 7 ore. New stamps did not reach Faroes because of winter storms and immediate post war demands on shipping . The post master handstamped some spare 5 ore with “2 ore” type fixed to the end of an old chair leg! And I am envious of this pair. The other provisionals were produced in 1940 when the British Army had a defending garrison stationed on the islands. Denmark was occupied by the Nazis and Faroes were cut off from direct communication and stamp supplies. Low value stamps had to be surcharged. Quoting response to Terri's post ( philatelia) to move to Faroe Islands thread.
