The 1790s dates in the text refer to the dates on the warrants for the tracts of land being described and are not associated with the date that the letter was written. Unfortunately, there is no docketing on the letter to indicate the year that it was written.

Yeah that's sort of what I gathered too but, I just wanted to be certain I wasn't missing something. I'm still grabbing this item though! Still a nice early piece of my local history no? I bet 1814-1820-ish is just about in the correct ballpark then. Thanks!

That piece mentions Phillip Krebs of Jersey Shore. He may be the great great grandfather of Maynard G Krebs, that famous fellow that became marooned on an island.

rod222 the only Maynard G. Krebs I could find was a character on "The many loves of Dobie Gillis". Of course I didn't do much actual research like ancestry.com or The National Archives and such things but, it could be possible?
Unless your comment was in jest then of course probably not a relation...lol

Sorry Jeff, It was just tongue in cheek, was social experiment, see if anyone had been subject to 1960's American programming. I thought you twigged with Gilligan at the outset. Hope you didn't waste any time. Proves your readers read your posts!

Turns out in 1850 Solomon Bastress was a Judge and his property value was $4500.00!! He lived from 1788-1872. trees.ancestry.com/tree/36961427/person/19014749964/photox/1597e171-8df5-498b-a1d1-871f2e794cf1?src=searchHe was apparently a land surveyor also as this document would suggest. books.google.com/books?id=7X1BAQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA84&lpg=RA1-PA84&dq=Solomon+Bastress+Esq.&source=bl&ots=dUK32bsHcF&sig=rOc8yx3BCqIBLbkhiTl5IgkoHzM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Q2ZvVK3EK4f5yAT3oIKYDg&ved=0CCwQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=Solomon%20Bastress%20Esq.&f=falseI read over all the information writing down some "Bullet points" and am pretty certain this folded letter is from the mid 1840 to early 1850's. He done a lot in his time! Here is some of the stuff I saw documented and aren't in any kind of order. - He served on the Continental Congress, was a scrivener and a Burgess, associate judge, Judge, Surveyor, Lycoming County Representative, Partners in a smelting mill in Pine Creek, A Weaver & Dryer (his earliest trade), Also (sort of redundant) he was an Amanuensis (secretary or copyist), Notary Public {and had a seal listed} Finally Bastress St. in Jersey Shore, Pa. was obviously named after him.
