Portugal Franchise Stamps. (Here, for the Red Cross) Supplied by the Government to various charitable, scientific and Military organisations, for franking their correspondence. This privilege was withdrawn in 1938. Note: Luis de Camoens (pictured here) was blinded in one eye during the battle with the Moors in North Africa circa 1550.

Very nice SCB, nice presentation, I presume tagging comes off in water? Very nice colour combinations in the set, typically Portuguese. Their later "work tools" set, make a another nice page.

Actually the tagging remains, and is well visible (as yellow/yellowish bar) even on soaked stamps without UV. Agree about the tools-series as well

I know this 1935 item is a postage stamp, but it's so lovely, it is going into my Philatelic Cinderella collection. It looks like it could be a cindy!

So today I spent cataloging Mom's Portugal that were in a big lot I bought for her.I am really impressed with the early bi-color printings circa 1923ish. Does anyone have a set they could post scans of? Early engraving is always impressive. I think the set for Mozambique was printed about the same time?

I have taken a look at Portugal for bi-color issues in the 1920s. According to the Scott Catalogue, there are three "Independence" issues, which are printed in various colors for the frame of the design, with the center vignettes in black. The First Independence Issue, which came out in 1926, consists of 21 stamps, Scott #377-397. The Second Independence Issue, which came out in 1927, consists of 15 stamps, Scott #422-436. The Third Independence Issue, which came out in 1928, consists of 16 stamps, Scott #437-452. I have a few of these stamps, and I agree that they are quite beautiful. I am busy at the moment working on a job application which is due today, but I will go through my holdings and do some scans and post them either later this evening or tomorrow. If someone else out there has complete sets of these, perhaps they will see the activity in this thread and post some scans.

Here is a scan of the full set of the third issue, MNH. I recently sold these as this is not my specialty. They are a very nice set. I always keep scans of what I list, sell and don't sell. Enjoy the view! Mike

Enjoy the view! Thanks for this great post, Mike! That is much better than what I could offer, as I only have a few of the lower values from each of the three sets. Too bad you already sold these, as I would have been interested in them! Chris

Frog ( firstfrog2013 ), here is a scan of 8 (out of 15) stamps from the Second Independence Issue of Portugal from 1927. I am sorry that I don't have more or better-looking copies. Perhaps someone else will be able to offer better. Clearly, I need to upgrade most of these!

I received this cover in the mail today. It contained a very nice souviner sheet from 1939 Japan to add to my collection. It's a first class registered air mail cover, franked with two 2010, 50th anniversary of Madeira Botanical Gardens. The first is a souviner sheet with a 2 Euro stamp, and the second is another 2 Euro single from the same issue. To make up the full rate, an additional 0.50 Euro bicyclist/messenger stamp was issued. Enjoy..

Wonder why Portugal should be so under appreciated - most of the pre 1960 stamps are real beauties in terms of image appeal - I really must find some of the earlier examples. The stamp posted here lacks any particular merit and is later than '60, but since words on the backs of stamps aren't too frequent thought it might be of interest, though expect most people have already seen this one. In Portuguese, French and English, it reads .............. "The routes of the first voyage from Lisbon to India and back, according to research undertaken by Admiral Gago Coutinho" - sorry the lens has slightly distorted the words. This is SG 1376 I think and first issued in 1969 commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the birth of Vasco da Gama, who unlike Christopher Columbus managed to turn left out of Southern Europe and did indeed find India rather than the West Indies and south America - think there are four values in this set. The idea is that you read the back of the stamp prior to licking - once on the cover it's lost. Admiral Gago Coutinho was a Portuguese cartographer, geographer, naval historian and improver of navigational equipment and by the sound of it an all round adventurer, though oddly he poo pooed some of Einstein's work. I suspect the face shows simply a stylized design of the world map as it might have been imagined in the late medieval period.

I think that the 'under appreciated' is a matter of perspective paul1 and is likely a matter of awareness and availability for the stamps of Portugal and her former colonies. I would suggest, given the bidding, both at auction and with on-line sellers, that there is a 'small', but rather dedicated group of collectors for Portuguese material (including snipers).
Glad you found them though and if I can help with locating some of those earlier issues for you, just let me know...
Have fun and happy collecting!!

hi stanley64 - a very big thanks for your sincere offer, which I may yet take you up on. Like many of us who are WW collectors, I get up some days and don't quite know what part of the world to devote my time to;-) Perhaps like many Brits. there seems to be a natural pull from the many areas on the map that were once coloured pink, and it takes some time to realize there are many other equally interesting countries. It's likely that my comment about 'under appreciated' came about simply from realizing that the preceding post, from stainlessb, was three years ago! thanks again.

not a highly in depth academic resume of Portuguese philatelic interest, just that I thought these little bundles tied with pink wool, intriguing and made me smile. Perhaps the work of a dedicated 'fly specker' who decided to keep multiples of certain low values all together - plus the few Sir Rowland Hill low values from August 1940 I mentioned the other day.

In "former times" it was very normal to buy and sell cheap stamps in bundles like these, mostly in bundles of 100. "Packet-makers" were the buyers.

thanks salentin - I fully admit to being the owner of very many cheap stamps ;-);-) ........... when you say 'packet makers', assume you mean making up packets of cheap stamps for collectors?? Appreciate your well informed input.
