Hi All
As a new collector to this area , i was hooping to see what type of Specialty catalogs are available. I currently have the SG Simplified world 2014 ( or rather access to this) and am buying the Scott Colombia selection. However given the vast breadth of what i am seeing ( as well as lots of overprints as well as value changes via overprint) is there a good specialty catalog with lots of images ? found a few threads on the internet but nothing that could be described as definitive. Any recommendations?

Hi All As a new collector to this area , i was hooping to see what type of Specialty catalogs are available. You may be jumping in too fast. My advice, would be to follow the Scott catalogue, and purchase Mr. Bill Steiner's CDRom of Worldwide Album pages ($39 as I recall) which you can print off, page by page, as you secure the stamps. You can adhere the stamps via mounts, or hinges, as is your preference. You'll end up with a collection, that mimics the Scott catalogue, and will be easily understood by most collectors, if you begin to flyspeck, you can add your own pages later or just mount the stamps with pencilled notes. If you decide at some time hence to sell your collection (Heaven forbid!) then most collectors will pay a premium for a nicely set out album. I use pretty mundane 4 ring Binder Cases ($4.50) from Officeworks and buy "slip cases" to prevent dust deterioration. Ultimately, it's your journey, just take this as one option. Colombia will end up with about 2 full binder cases that weighs around 5 Kg, and will be a pleasure to handle. PS: Employ this forum as your query forum, if you have a Colombia oddity, that you do not recognise, we have South American specialists here that will generally answer most queries.

If you want a more detailed catalog than Scott, I recommend Michel (in German).

Hi I replied in your first post but I will repeat. Alvaro Barriga: 1980's Specialized Catalog (filatelia.colombia@gmail.com) Ask him if he has any 1980's catalogs left. Leo Temprano: Numismática y Filatelia Leo Temprano Ask him if he has any 1980 specialized catalogs left.
Los Primeros Cincuenta Años de Correo Aero en Colombia (You may find this in an auction) Great introduction to Colombia Air Mails (Spanish and English) Scott 2015 catalog pages. There are others more specialized Also recommend you joining COPAPHIL (Colombia Panama Study Group) www.copaphil.org/Jerry B

Hi Jerry B Many thanks, i wont be there until Jan but the good news is i have someone coming out in September to Australia so have asked her to go up and check for me, though i will email today first. I did also find a few links that are useful , for new and current issues that can be bought www.4-72.com.co/index.php?searchword=estampillas&searchphrase=all&Itemid=201&option=com_searchAs well as this one that nicely covers recent issues ( 2010 on ) www.fiaf-filatelia.com/philately/2010/issues_2010_colombia.htmlAll good, as they help build up my image database . I know Atlanta reasonably well, i used to work for NCR based there and i still go via Atlanta as Delta goes to Bogota direct from there. Nice place but cold in Winter ( especially as we have Xmas by the beach here !) Tired In Syd

Hi tiredinsyd I recommended the 1980's Barriga and Temprano as they were the last specialized editions. The new ones are just a listing of issues. Make sure your friend gets the 1980's editions as the others are nice but not very useful. For images of later stamps you could also go to: www.wnsstamps.post/en/Under the old postal system, AdPostal, the web site was useful. Under 4-72 I do not think it is as useful as before. I noticed that in your avatar area you stated: Confused about Early Colombian Issues. If you have any questions you can always e-mail me and I can try to answer them for you.
We haven't gone to Bogota Colombia for quite a while. The air fare from Atlanta is ridiculous and since we have retired it is stretching the budget quite a bit.
Interesting that you once worked at NCR. I worked with a fellow that was a computer programmer at the facility in Norcross.

Hi Jerry
Thanks, i will make sure i get that one. The person in Colombia is actually my fiancee, we should be getting her final Visa grant to come to Australia for good very soon. So we are frantically buying everything we need there for life out here ( including catalogs etc !)
I had a good 6 hour run at it today i have a dining room table with masses of Colombian Stamps assembled and i am working my way through them . I am getting some variations in many of the issues, not knowing the print techniques used its hard to say if they qualify as a variety or error. I might take you up on your offer to scan some in and post them up to get your opinion?
I agree about your comment on the usefulness of the postal system there , it seems to have degenerated ( and this is the country that has multiple issues featuring their Post Office) Not even sure if i can mail order recent issues , how do you go about ordering current material from there ?
Anyway a great start today , stockbooks out and being populated and noting the gaps and quality in what i have . Least its the best way to de stress .
I worked at NCR for a long time , it was a great company but sadly lost its mojo and thus i went to another large US IT company a few years back. Thats a bit better but you cant ask too much these days from any company
Hope you have a great Sunday
Cheers

Hi tiredinsyd
According to the person I worked with AT&T really screwed up NCR. I hope it works out fairly rapidly. It took our nephew 1 year to get his US visa. He used to work on the novella "Betty La Fea" so he applied at CNN International and they turned him down. He is now in Toronto, Canada Where is your fiancee in Colombia? Is she in Bogota?
Unfortunately I do not have a scanner so I cannot scan any variations. However, if you send me scans I will definitely help out.
To send e-mails directly with attachments use Jerrybemail-stamps 'at' yahoo 'dot' com.
I can sympathize with you being "tired" but it may be nice to have at least a first name.
If one is to specialize in Colombia those pages may not suffice. With the early issues there are so many colored papers, perforation types, paper types, etc.. I have a couple of pages with 2 to 4 varieties on the same page.

Yes, I'm sure you're right there Jerry I am just passing into my 4th Album for Hungary (5.5Kgs) But it's taken a while to get there. And here's where we disagree, but with a proviso, the collector has to be able to produce his own pages for varieties. Steiner's pages give a fabulous opportunity to preserve concordance with the Scott catalogue, moreover I believe Steiner's page layout is handsome without overbearing dialogue. One can leaf through a completed Steiner page set, with an accompanying catalogue at hand, and experience a cool marriage between information and display. Personally constructed collector pages for varieties and oddities, postmarks, etiquettes, the occaisional cover add spice to the experience. I've yet to see an album surpass this partnership, excepting of course, gold medal exhibit material at Exponet etc, This is a class that is beyond my personal target (or ability).

Hi Jerry and Rod BTW its James. Jerry i just started when AT and T spun back NCR , what happened after was far worse though. When i started they had some 1200 employees here , now i think they are around 200 odd as the core ( maybe more they did a few acquisitions recently but that was by debt i believe) Thanks for the thoughts on my fiancee, its been 7 months now of offshore processing , we should be close now otherwise its yet another trip there for me. Will see but for now i have my whole dinning table occupied with my sorting ( 2.3 meters by 1.2 meters ) so there is upside Of course that means i cant vacuum there either so extra time for me! Yes she is in Bogota and will be going to the places you recommend on my behalf to bring back the items with her. Plus we plan to be there in January in any case as i am in NYC for work every Jan anyway. Rod , i found the Scott pages you mentioned on ebay , so my bids in so Scott plus SG is what i have . But i am finding ( as Jerry alluded to , a lot of varieties in paper , print , perfs and shading that i need to work through . I figure i have about 6 thousand or so from Colombia , of all different types so i am sorting these out and have elected at this point to settle on stockbooks for basic sorting at this point. My intent though is to design my own ( hence why i need the catalogs) and to print the pages off containing reference numbers etc. Will take some work , but its the only way that i can scale and by using Hawid mount strips i can really make it look good. Plus i end up with a electronic version , perfect for insurance reference. I googled the Steiner pages, thanks for the reference i do like the way the pages are set out and it has clarified what i want to do.

James, Good luck on your journey. "Those who care, criticise thoughtfully" Knowing what you have ahead, I would caution "Hell is paved with good intentions" Before you tarry forth, headlong into page design, consider, why reinvent the wheel? Scott and Steiner have it on a plate for you. That said, I wish you every success, and look forward to your results Enjoy this fabulous hobby. PS: Either way, an "electronic version" is easily constructed, I scan my mounted stamps on Steiner page by page, into a *.pdf format Easily completing a personalised electronic stamp album.

Hi James It is easier buying direct from Chirokmd than bidding on eBay. I am not sure if the eBay sections are 2015 and/or complete. One reason you should have Barriga and Temprano catalogs is they list varieties that Scott, Michel or SG do not. At one time Yvert and Tellier was pretty good but I haven't seen one lately. A hint to sorting the pile. First sort by face design disregarding paper color, perforations etc.. Put each group of face different into glassine envelopes or something similar. Once done, group the glassines by issue date. Once you get a catalog(s) start identifying the stamps in each glassine. If you have that many Colombian stamps I am making a trip to Australia to see what you have I wish I had a pile like that. Yes AT&T is great with communications but they should stay away from software. When I did consulting work at Bell Labs in the 1970-1980's they brought in the consulting firm I worked for to do software. Recently I have been sending letters to AT&T corporate complaining about how they fouled up Yahoo. I get responses but it is only lip service. Like they did with NCR, I think AT&T also killed Yahoo. You can buy stamps from Alvaro Barriga and be confident in the fact you are getting genuine stamps. I have stamps that I want to buy but since Alvaro does not have his US bank account anymore I have to send US dollars to a cousin in Bogota and he will go over to the store and pay Alvaro in Pesos. I do not use credit cards on line so this is the only way. I believe he does use PayPal. Personally I prefer Showgard to Hawid open top mounts. See this write up that I created a while back: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/304/tips-using-stamp-mountsI would have thought that getting papers to emigrate to Australia would be easier than the US. Our nephew went to Toronto and got a resident visa almost immediately. Jerry B

Hi Jerry
The sorting has been a massive challenge but i hit on a process that deals with volume. My local hardware sells some great containers used for sorting out nails. So i have a few of these and started by sorting out older issues ( they went on the table) and the more modern ones all went by like value in a compartment in each container. As a test of mental agility i can remember the location on the table of some 300 types , so that started it. Then i started filling the stockbooks, mostly 1 strip per issue ( or two for HV or rare ) and if i had more than could fit in sorted out top 15 and the rest in glassine envelopes. Will be a good source for varieties etc later
Got a little inspired at work today , we make a lot of scanning technology and the ability to scan and compare items is excellent .Will play around with that over Xmas as a great way to look for varieties.
I am definitely in Bogota by Jan, so i will be visiting them personally . However the best buy i made was actually in Cuba, they take collecting there to a whole new level and in the markets there there are groups of collectors wit stockcards where i picked up some very nice 1860s issues.
Australia is harder to get into than the USA now, the doors have been slammed shut and i dont think too many people are happy about it. You can be married now and you still have to wait minimum 12 months , average 15 months to rejoin your wife or husband in Australia.
Thanks for the link , I will order in some showguard mounts and try them. I am a little way away yet , but i am staring to look at paper to use now ( acid free ) from the specialty range that will fit into my new printers here ( i have capacity up to A3 )
I seem to be completing a lot of sets, but need to work on the quality . Am sure that will happen over time.
James

Hi Rod Thanks, i had 6 good hours on the weekend in a straight run that paid big dividends. Sadly work is getting in the way at the moment . I am hoping that buy doing one country i can go deeper than i would normally . I have a rule, i can only collect if i have been there So that limits my countries by definition ( plus gives me incentive to travel more Are you going to the stamp show in WA , I believe its this weekend? If so and you happen to meet a dealer that has Colombia/ Latin America stamps can yo let me know their name in Oz? Hope the weather is better your way , we have had 159mm in two and a half days . James Hi James, The Stamp Show was last weekend, I missed it, bidding at auctions, and I never won a single lot, so I should have gone. I am a worldwide collector, so country specific dealers are not my bag. I follow Bud's advice here on TSF, (Stoltzpup) I try to buy collections, or part collections, I save up until I can afford a decent hit, between $50-$100 That route saves one heaps of money, buying from Ebay, single stamps or small sets is very bad collecting economics, and usually reserved to when you have a good collection, and just need to fill the odd gap, here and there. I find the most efficient sort method, is to get hold of some GK102BK dealer's cards Date each card with a year and keep in a 1 or 2 Litre Ice Cream container, ......... messy desks gone forever I noticed the weather over there, hope you sealed up tight, here, in Inland WA we miss most of the severe weather, most little towns are built in hollows, all we have to worry about is the occaisonal flood, but it never gets above the door step. (we have had 159mm over the entire year )
