I don't get many modern commemoratives on covers so I was torn between posting this here or in the Modern US board. This stamp is from the Vintage Circus Posters pane of 16 (8 different; Scott 4898-4905) issued on May 5, 2014 in Sarasota, Florida. This circa 1915 Al G. Barnes Wild Animal Circus poster, made by the Erie Lithographing & Printing Company, showcases a tiger riding an elephant, which is wearing a green, red, and gold cape.

Hi Rodney
Mary Ann Owens had a topical exhibit of elephants on stamps which won numerous awards. Unfortunately I cannot find any of her exhibits on-line, there may not be any.

Jerry B Cheers Jerry, apparently a wide ranging study in Thematics. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Ann_Aspinwall_OwensWe possibly can thank her for her efforts in promoting thematics, the discipline that brings so many youngsters into philately. Most frames by children at bourses are thematics. One day Cinderellas will break through, and there will be great interest.

My cover from The Stamp Forum's Frogster. Circus orientated, very colourful, indicating the 20th Century's form of the colosseum. I can still recall the smell and excitement of the sawdust and the animals, but saddened when seeing them in cages in the cold light of day. Corky the Circus boy was a favourite when I was youngster. "Spray on" Albany NY cancel with 6 line wavy killer.

This elephant on a 1979 stamp from Cameroon wishes he had longer legs. Two egrets (I think) hope he knocks loose a tasty snack, maybe there's a lizard or something like that up there ... Ryan

Lots of really nice elephants here; many thanks to Steve ( tomiseksj ), salentin , and Nelson (@falshung )! Like Nelson, I am also a big fan of the classics, so I have to show my personal favorite design here, from Italian Somaliland:

I agree the Laos stamps from this period are true works of art. Here is one of my very first stamps (Mauritania YT362 from 1977). A little worse for wear because I was 7 years old when I got it from actual mail and wasn't yet as careful as I should have been.

I pulled this image up to post on Twitter yesterday, so I thought I'd add it here. Gambia SG131, with a very uncommon intrusion of the sheet number onto the stamp

Issued on March 23rd,1974,the stamp, from a set of 3 "Mythology",shows God Indra. Indra´s throne resembles remakably the coats of arms of the Kindom of Laos.

There were never millions of elephants in Laos, although the ancient Laos called itself: "Kingdom of the Millions Elephants". But certainly many of them were killed by the US-Air Force in her "secret" bombing of Laos during the Vietnam War.
The flag of the kingdom;stamp issued May 13th,1968; from a set of 5; Coat of arms on a 1 Kip note.At the time, when I got it in Laos, the rate was 600 Kip for one US-$.

The elephant is the national animal of the Ivory Coast, so it shows up often on their stamps, including on these examples for a series of definitives:

Here from Swaziland (YT#165 from 1969) part of one the first definitive series after independence. The country has recently changed its name to Eswatini, but I have yet to see stamps with this new nomenclature.

More elephants from Cote d'Ivoire, this time on a series of definitives featuring the country's coat of arms. The ones with the white background are YT#774-776 [1986] and 791 [1987]. With the green background and written "Republique de Cote d'Ivoire", we have YT #291 [1969] and #373 [1974]. With "Cote d'Ivoire" on the top and the green background, they are YT #395-97 [1976].

A booklet from South Africa, featuring The Big Five (including an elephant, of course), first issued in 2014. Self-adhesive airmail postcard rate, YT #PA-C229. Two phosphor bands on the left and bottom sides of the stamps are faintly visible.
