French Polynesia 1958 Definitives - the first stamps under the name "French Polynesia" A beautiful engraved set! I love the way that same stamp but printed in different colours can look so different. I find myself looking at each one, then moving to the next looking for something different, the set with the lass with the guitar really seems to have this effect. Maybe its the pretty gal??? Lovely Stamps BC

It is amazing, the colorfully engraved stamps France produced back then. Here is a single color engraved stamp from 1948.

An "Official" Unissued Stamp. The Story: `French Polynesia Find Writing in "Pacifica", the journal of the Pacific Islands Study Circle of Great Britain, Mr. C. Lambert claims that the French Government sold fifty copies of the above unissued stamp to a French dealer. This is the remarkable story related by Mr Lambert: "The first French Doctors Conference took place in Tahiti in 1972 and on that occasion a slogan cancellation was prepared and used for a few days in the Tahiti Post Office. In 1973 a second meeting was scheduled and a special stamp was prepared, its issue being announced in the French Philatelic Press. This second meeting was cancelled shortly afterwards as a result of dissension within the French Doctors Organisation (Council of L'Ordre) related to Abortion Laws in France. The same Philatelic Paper (Le Monde Philatelistes) announced that the stamp issue had been cancelled. "In 1976 I was offered a few copies of this unissued stamp by a French Dealer I was trading with and knew of my interest in French Polynesian material. I was naturally very surprised that such a stamp should be available and before purchasing I requested proof that it could be legally held without problems! A few days later I was given the necessary proof — they had been sold to a French Dealer at face value by the Postal Administration in Paris (ATPOM 85 Av. de la Bouidonnais, Paris) and I now have the bill for this transaction on which the stamps are fully and clearly described. "Fifty copies of this stamp were sold to the dealer and it is amazing for a Postal Administration to sell such unissued stamps at face value and provide a bill! They are in fact the only 'Officially Unissued Stamps' in French Philatelic History."

Steve, that is a nice stamp. I do not have any yet from the 1934-39 series, so have not made my pages yet. Thanks for showing!
Rod, I never heard about that unissued stamp before. I do not see it in Scott. Is it listed in Gibbons?

Hi Brian, Alas! if it is listed (or mentioned) it would be in an SG specialised catalogue, I only have SG specialised to 1965 and 1969 then I have the "simplified" to 2005, and it wouldn't be in there. I think you would be best placed to seek out an owner of Michel Catalogue French Polynesia if anywhere, it would be listed by the Germans. I was remiss in not giving my scans which the magazine from whence it came, possibly "The Australian Stamp News" circa 1976

Here you go, Brian. Courtesy of Cherrystone Auctions. If there exist only 50, that purchaser made a very wise investment, in my opinion.

In my opinion, France had the most beautiful stamps. Don't have any of their modern stuff, so can't comment on those.

When I was a kid, my dad worked a while for a Hawaiian company. In 1968 we got a chance to spend two weeks in French Polynesia. A few days on Tahiti, and the rest on Bora Bora. Bora Bora was not overdeveloped like now. Before the cruise ships and jet skis. There were no paved roads, just a crushed coral road around the perimeter, and almost no cars. I think I saw an old truck and a jeep parked in town. Most everyone walked or rode these funky Mopeds. Mom got one each of what different stamps they had at the post office or maybe the hotel front desk. They are still in the envelope below. 1960 Local Motives 1964 Islands

Lovely Stamps BC 20 years later, a new set of the same stamps appeared, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first French Polynesia issue. So they're two new colors schemes to enjoy: YT 121-23 and Block 4.
