I have found this 2-LED, 45x mini-scope to be perfect for detailed viewing when I don't want to take the time to scan the stamp or set up the USB microscope. The $2.99 price from this seller is hard to beat! Steve I ordered one of these yesterday. Thanks for the recommendation. I am anxious to get it.

Here is another item that I use periodically, a digital microscope that hooks to your computer via USB cable. The price on this one seems higher than I recall paying so, if you're considering it you might shop around for a better deal. The beauty of this one is that it allows you to view the item on your computer screen. It also lets you capture images of what you're viewing. Steve I did a search on EBAY "Digital Microscope" The prices are all over the place but a 50x500 is less than $20 with Free Shipping.

I almost got the thing working can't seem to actually get to view anything yet but I know I'm close.I moved the usb supply to one from back of tower and it seems to have more output because it launched the install driver program right away.I just need to find command center for the thing now.

The rain has allowed me time to mess around again. The stumbling block seems to be a re-occurring message unable to launch c:/windows/system32//taskkill.exe.Whatever that is must be responsible to launch the installer.Anyone know how to work around it??Remember I'm not a tech head just an old guy with an old desktop.

Do you have an Antivirus program? (AV) Taskkill.exe is an MS "command line" file that can be used to literally "kill", or shut down, running processes. Similar to using your Task Manager (Ctrl - Al - Delete), selecting the Processes tab, then right clicking a process file there and clicking End Process (which can then bring on a crash if the wrong process is selected, so no experimenting with this). Since both good and bad programs use taskkill.exe to do their functions it is often picked up by security scans as a malicious file. On that note, malwares will often use known file names to disguise their bad files, so just saying a file is good or bad based on just the name nowadays is just not enough info to go on.

I screwed up everything but good now.It won't even let me restore and printer is off line.NEVER let me near your computer.I'll have to go find my neighbor who will definitely laugh at me.He writes code for Disney and Vegas casinos as well as off shore banks. If he can't fix it it's not fixable.

A number of years ago rod222 talked me into purchasing a flatbed scanner. Now I wonder how I ever managed before. Here is an example
Frog its not hard to use, if I could learn so can you, mind you my throat was sore from shouting at it for the little while it took me to get the hang of it.
This is the one I picked up I sure you can find one just as good and cheaper if you look around. Beats the pants off anything when you want to examine a page of stamps. Load up a vario scan and fly speck away www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/scanners/photo_scanners/canoscan_lide210
Lots of members here with plenty of experience with scanners, no shortage of help.
I sure if you start using scanners and 600-1200dpi you never go back

You may be right. It will probably have to go on the want list though.Seasons bout over for excavation work and holidays are coming dollars will be short, unless we get lots of that white stuff. In which case I'll have excess funds again from long hours of removal operations. If this dang thing doesn't function soon it may be come an instant giveaway here.It seems I may remain stone-aged for a bit longer.

It is a shame that you haven't been able to get it to function -- it is a nice tool when working properly. You should ask your computer-whiz neighbor to have a go at it before giving up.

Don't think it was me but the 'puter. This was the first I got that message and I've been scanning things right along. The only thing I can think is may be it wasn't plugged in the back of the tower too good.I had to screw with the printer cord yesterday maybe I woke it up.Who knows but it's doing something now.

I seen mention of a digital microscope on another thread and was wondering a few questions about them. I would like to try find one of these as my eyesight is just not what it used to be. Is there any one any better then the other for stamps? If you are able to take a picture with it how does that compare to a scan of the stamp? Right now I have a scanner but for the life of me can not figure out how to get it to scan and close up of a stamp. I have heard it mentioned X by Y dpi but I don't remember what the x and y are. And I don't know how to change the dpi on my scanner. Thanks all for any input you might have on this.

carabopYour scanner should be all you need. Let us know your model and see if we can help. Once you get the scanner in control, believe me, a new world of stamp collecting will open up for you. Up close and in your face, stamps are a kind of magic.

I actually am tech challenged as most here know.I bought a Digital microscope and when I got the connection etc. figured out it was very simple. My total investment was right around $25 and I am of the opinion a worthy investment.I can look at stamps ,flyspecking those I suspect under the 20x loupe. My prompts under scanner allow me to chose to use the ink jet scanner or the scope so pretty cut and dry use.

It is a brother DCP-7040 Alas! your Brother User's guide is about as useful (useless) as a Stanley Gibbons Stamp Catalogue Your user's guide is here download.brother.com/welcome/doc002338/cv_dcp7040_usaeng_usr_b.pdfLook under "S" for scanner and it tells you, "Use the software user's guide on the CDRom" ergo, sorry, we cannot assist. IT users journalists were never really hepful in communications.

If at sometime you decide on a stand alone scanner, I'd suggest an Epson (It employs the brilliant SEIKO software) Try Epson Perfection You can put 30 stamps on the scanner platen, draw a carousel around the 30 stamps, and press "GO" and it will scan the 30 stamps individually one at a time, whilst you wash the dishes for the wife. whilst you enjoy a cuppa from hubby. An Epson V500 shops around $300 a V200 ( I use) is around $190
One thing for my next purchase, I'll probably look for a scanner driven by USB (if they exist)

Hi Rodney Trolley in the US is a transportation vehicle. Shopping cart is for your goodies at the local market or for online shopping. However, the market shopping cart may be considered a transportation vehicle as well if you put your kiddie in the cart seat. In that case you people in OZ have it right, shopping cart = trolley (dual purpose), otherwise I not so sure . No price but Epson Australia has this specification for the Amazon unit: Epson Perfection 1200USB. There is also a SCSI version. Since you know more about scanners than I do, let me know what you think of the 1200. I believe the local office supply has one (unknown price). It seems that the driver will work for XP - Windows 10.
Epson USA has discontinued the Perfection 1200U and replaced it with a V30 model. However, I guess I will look at the V37 model as it seems to be most popular. Epson has a price of $99.99 USD ($136.44 Australian). Jerry B

Here is more detailed information about scanning with your all-in-one (starting on page 30). Things to remember are to use the prescan function to crop the area to be scanned and to set the resolution sufficiently high to show the detail you're after (usually 600 dpi will suffice). Like you, I use an all-in-one (Canon PIXMA MG6420) and am perfectly content with its output. I do have a digital microscope but only use it when I'm unable to see what I need to from a scan, which is rare. After scanning, I use the free IrfanView program to make any required adjustments (e.g., straightening, detailed cropping, adding text) and to resize my images to 1040x768 pixels and save them at a file size of 99kb. Here is an image processed as described above: And here is the upper left corner of the base scan processed as described above:

Thank you for the info Steve with that info I was able to scan my stamp. But with IrfanView I am stumped so far, haven't really had to much time to play with it yet. I did get the scan of the stamp open in IrfanView. That about as far as I have gotten so far. Any step by step help to crop, resize etc would be helpful.
