1855 Scott 4 4p blue "Hope" Seated White Paperbigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2019/09/cape-of-good-hope-closer-look.htmlThe iconic Cape Hope triangles I remember from enticing stamp dealer ads in magazines when I was a kid. All one had to do was find one in the attic attached to old correspondence. Of course, I never found one, and they were too expensive for a kid budget. But, as a WW collector, I've managed to snag one or two. Cape of Good Hope stamps still have that exotic thrill. Interested? Read on...

bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2019/10/cape-verde-1914-1938-bob-closer-look.htmlThis is the second of two blog posts for Cape Verde: this one covering 1914-1938 & BOB. The Scott catalogue through 2011 simplified the typographic 1914-26 "Ceres" issue, lumping the perfs (15 X 14; 12 X 11 1/2) and paper varieties together. But by 2014, the catalogue's listing for Cape Verde's "Ceres" issues was expanded. There are now "new" Scott numbers for the "Ceres" issues reflecting the more parsed listings.. That is what is presented here. Interested? Click the link. ;-)

Cape Verde - I really welcomed Scott getting up to speed with the Cape Verde Ceres. I collect colonial Africa and was working out of an old ragtag Stanley Gibbons Portugal & Colonies to get to a good list on the perf and other varieties. An interesting side bar was that I always noticed the two basic perf sets even when I was a relative beginner. I later confirmed two basic sets noted in Scott but needed to trip over an old S&G Portugal catalog to get to details of the two issues.

What happened to Gerben van Gelder's web site?
I was also looking for the latest checklist excel file but seems the link no longer works.

Alas, Gerben's site is no longer operative. A loss to philately. Angore - I will look into the Excel checklist file when I return home next week.

I downloaded that spreadsheet. Opened it in Apple Numbers & it gave me this warning... Great! Where are the formulas? I am so looking at getting a PC for my next computer. Apple rendered all my USB devices useless in the latest system update & there's a bunch of useless fonts I can't delete. It used to be the other way around but it seems Apple is knifing themselves in their own back!

That's all I can say on this matter! My Garmin watch, Celestron microscope & even a MicrSD card will NOT mount! They are recognized, but that's where any functionality stops!

I can still use the microscope. Save to SD card, transfer to iPad, then PhotoStream to computer! What a mess. Why did Apple do this?

I didn't realize that Apple users have problems with the Excel checklist, which, of course, is mainly used in a Windows environment. I tried again the Excel checklist link, and it works completely well for me, but I am a Windows user. Dilip Limaye did this checklist ( 1969 BB edition) in Excel. Much thanks to him. I must admit I am very analog (as opposed to digital) when it comes to stamp inventory and checklists. I don't use Excel. My Scott 1840-1940 Classic catalogue is filled with marks- it is my inventory.

bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2019/12/cayman-islands-1900-1947-closer-look.htmlCayman Islands 1900-1047 - a closer look Between 1889-1901, stamps of Jamaica were used in the Cayman Islands, and they can be found with postmarks identifying use there. Scott lists them (A1-A28) in the catalogue, and they all have a high CV (up to $8,000). They are for the specialist, not for you and me. BTW, Cayman Islands remained a Dependency of Jamaica until 1962, when it became a Crown Colony. The first issue proper for the Cayman Islands was a two stamp typographic release in 1900 showing Victoria. Note the white side panels and the "Postage...Postage". CV is $4+-$15. This De La Rue design is similar, if not identical, to other British Empire issues of the era. I'm reminded that, in general, stamps on cover today are much more valuable then those (the vast majority) that are now off cover. Here, Stanley Gibbons values 1p carmine rose @ 25X if on cover. Interested? Read on...

Thanks for your multiple posts - all interesting - I am an expert in my own field but do not put $$$$$ on stamps - respect the ones who do as I always say - you can do whatever you wish with your $$$$.

jkjblue , super stuff. I hadn't been to your blog for quite some time. You're still killing it. Two thoughts. Have you come across a Jamaica-used-in-Caymans postmark? I appreciate you pointing it out - it's good to have something else to look for. The 1922 2-1/2d you include has a neat design feature...in the bottom tablet, the left leg of the 'A' in Islands rests on the L. I love that. It happens on the 1922 Virgin Islands' Colony Seal issue, too. Maybe one more?
Keep up the good work.

jkjblue , I don’t know whether to thank you or be mad at you! Thanks to your excellent blog, which I visit several times a day, I recently purchased a Scott International Part 1 and have been spending the vast majority of my time and resources on it. As if I didn’t already have enough on my plate...

renden and cjd - Nice to hear from both of you. I appreciate all you have done on the stamp forums over the years. No, I haven't come across a Cayman postmark on a Jamaican stamp yet. coastwatcher - good, my plan is working.

bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2020/01/cayman-islands-1950-issue-war-tax.htmlBritish Commonwealth issues, for those of us that like pictorials, have a reputation as a bit staid and stuffy with issue after issue showing the Queen or King and not much else. So it is a delight when that rule is broken. The bi-colored Cayman Islands issue of 1950 is lovely, and we will spend some time with this post taking a look!

I like the KGVI pictorial issues too. They are my favorites along with the QEII reissues.

To be fair, a number of the KGVI pictorial vignettes, and even some QEII, first appeared with KGV.
But there are some great ones with both VI and EII. The cat boat isn't the best example of it, but the designers often coax the impression of three or more colors out of their bicolors.

bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2020/01/recent-additions-to-collection-for-2019.htmlFor eight years I've been looking for a Two Penny Blue. First issued May 7, 1840, one day after the equally iconic One Penny Black, this engraved GB design has rarely been surpassed for simplicity and beauty. Only two plates were needed, compared to the eleven plates for the Penny Black, and then the Two Penny Blue design had white lines added in 1841. So really only a year for the original Two Penny Blue. Naturally the CV cost is high ($900+). But a nice opportunity arose, and I took it. And that is indicative of this past year - a year of changes and opportunities. As I stated in the last annual review for 2018, this year would be more about a targeted "want list" approach, and less about purchasing feeder albums. Recall that I collect WW 1840-1940 (-1952 British Commonwealth). So how did I do? Check out the link!

bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2020/01/central-lithuania-closer-look.htmlClearly, one of the more obscure stamp issuing entities for WW collectors is Central Lithuania, which existed on the stamp scene between 1920 and 1922 The stamps for this issue can be found in various shades. And remember, most issues are both perforated and imperforated. Scott does not separate out the imperfs and they have same Scott numbers as the perforated examples. A word to the wise: since Central Lithuania's stamps are mostly lithographed, they provide fertile grounds for forgeries. Pay attention to perfs, as the forgeries often have different perfs than the genuines. Intetrested? Take a look!

bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2020/02/ceylon-1861-1900-victorian-era-closer.htmlCeylon is a delight for WW collectors. But realistically, because it is an attractive British Crown Colony with stamp production from 1857-1949, CV prices are rather high, and there are some earlier stamps that are beyond the reach of many collectors. But there are still many stamps that a modest wallet can collect. With that in mind, I will present three Ceylon blog posts: this one will look at the Victorian era (1861-1900).
