Stamps were initially issued in 1847: not just any stamps, but the famous "Post Office" Victoria Mauritius stamps. Mauritius, then, is a rich specialists delight, with some 24 major and minor number "Post Paid" stamps issued between 1847-1859, and a catalogue value in the thousands up to a million. ! But there are also many interesting issues produced that are attractive for the WW classical era collector of modest means, as well. bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2013/11/ClassicalStampsofMauritius.html

If you enjoy Philatelic novels, then 'The Stamp Collector' by David Benedictus is excellent. It's all about one man's obsession with procuring copies of the Post Office Mauritius issue.

Mayotte, consisting of the islands Grande-Terre (24 miles by 14 miles) and Petite-Terre ( 4 square miles), is located between Madagascar and Mozambique in the Mozambique Channel of the Indian Ocean. It is geographically part of the Comoro Islands. It was a French colony, along with Moheli, Grand Comoro, and Anjouan. bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2013/12/ClassicalStampsofMayotte.html

Mesopotamia! bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2013/12/TheClassicStampsofMesopotamia.htmlThis blog will focus on the British occupation issues of 1917- 1922, as well as the Mosul issue of 1919. All of the stamps consist of surcharged/overprinted stamps of Turkey. One will find these stamps under "Mesopotamia" in the Scott Classic catalogue. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue files all entries under "Iraq". Neither Scott or Stanley Gibbons explains the "I.E.F. 'D'". Since there were both Indian and British occupation troops, " International or Indian? Expeditionary Force" is my best guess. Any readers know?

PS : Nice example of blunt perforation pins. They are barely puncturing the paper, top and bottom, and bruising the paper.

bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2014/01/TheClassicStampsofMexico.htmlMexico and it's history, both real and philatelic, is very complex, to say the least. Rather than attempt a general survey, I've elected to concentrate on the 1910 Independence Issue, with a followup examination of all the overprints subsequently generated with this issue during the 1913-16 civil wars. Take a look!

I think I show four stamps on the blog post with cancels. But, you are right, it is easier to find unused specimens. BC - do you only collect used, or is that just your preference?

I only collect used classics, except for exceptional circumstances. Though I do collect mint Canadian definitive stamps and Tuvalu definitive stamps.

Good for you. The fact that it is quite a bit more difficult to find genuine used ( I'm not talking about CTO) shows the lack of need for the many stamps issued for many colonial colonies. I don't even mind CTO if one doesn't have to pay a premium for them. I problem I have is that "used", in the cases where the catalogue values "used" higher, is that one finds many suspicious postmarks that are probably not genuine used. I refuse to pay a premium for a probable scam. So by collecting unused also, I don't have to fall for the ploy.

Nice treatment Jim, regarding your observation on the "postage dues" which I agree with, perhaps these countries had a less stable postage environment, with fluctuating rates, hence the need for more dues. However, the existance we see of used postage dues from these countries seems to dispute that hypothesis.

Interesting observation about the postage dues. One thing I was surprised about when I started collecting Japan is that there are no postage dues -- they just use handstamps. -- Dave

Interesting, Cancelled at Dzaoudzi, (presumably) which is the capital of Mayotte, not Moheli. I suppose the stamps were transferrable throughout the islands.

I believe that the four Comoro islands 'entities' were placed under the administration of Madagascar in 1911, and the stamps would be valid throughout the archipelago by 1914.

Nice cancel on the Moheli stamp. Your site has been an invaluable resource. I appreciate getting the broad outlines of stamp production and history even for countries outside my core collecting interest. At times the images you (and other forum members including Rod) post of your respective Deep Blue album pages "almost" make me regret the decision to have chosen stock books (with "Steiner labels") for the housing of my collection.
Especially enjoy the articles on stamp albums (e.g., the comparison of Big Blue, the Browns and Steiner) on your blog and on Filling Spaces.

Thanks Europe1840 for the comments-appreciated. I enjoy the album comparison posts, and, perhaps I should do more. I would love to include the Minkus Global Supreme too.
