Danzig "Coat of Arms" 1924-1937
Are there members here who can explain how I may determine what stamps are "White Paper" in this set please? All my stamps in this set are postmarked (used). I am beginning with the 5-pfennig orange on (yellowish), and it is very difficult to imagine what "white paper" may look like, as they all look "white" to me.
I have turned them over on their backs, and on 3 examples, I can see the design from the back, (translucent) the other 4 are opaque: would this be a guide?
Thanks.

Rod,
These can be difficult to distinguish without side-by-side comparison. And even then, discoloration due to age, soaking, etc., can skew the comparison. Trying to ID them from a scan is usually futile, as variations in brightness of the scan make it difficult to accurately capture white/yellow distinctions.
The easiest way would probably be to compare the paper with the issues that were never issued on the yellowish paper. Of the 9 major issues in this set, 5 (15/20/25/30/40 Pf) weren't issued on yellow, so any copies of those you have have to be white.
Also, the cancel dates on any used copies may help. For the coil perfed copies like those shown above, any cancels pre-Oct 1935 have to be white.

Yes, I had noticed mint/unused stamps that had been soaked, appeared "very white" v those with gum, that took on a yellowish darker shade.

I don't have either of those catalogs, but I think I should look for them. Older Michel Specialized catalogues list post offices, which is where my list that I collect from comes from. Why Michel scaled back their listings, I'll never know.

Why Michel scaled back their listings, I'll never know. I do not have them either. CD's of these I would happily fork out circa $20 I wonder if the Philatelists sometimes price themselves out of the market at $70 No argument the work that goes into them demand a fair price. PS : I could find no listing under "Falling Rain" for lists of towns in Danzig Perhaps they list them under Poland. No decent map exists for WW2 names in Danzig either. Guess : Danzig Langfuhr Luftpost Airmail Pmk

Rod, It's not quite what you're looking for, but file this site away -- Kartenmeister. It allows you to search by German or Polish name. There's also a good hi-res map of at least a portion of Freie Stadt Danzig. I may have a map of the entire thing, but I won't have access to my references again until after the new year.

That is nothing short of amazing. Thank you. I donated to the site in appreciation. I can work on my Poland now as well.

Ryan Ryan, I didn't intend to deceive, Not of my collection. I bid on the lot, but was outbid. Because of North American auctions, I have to make a stab, then take my luck, If I stay up for the auction , I end up treading on my eyeballs the next morning. I made a bid of $25 (If I recall CV was around $150) I nearly got it, SOLD for $33 The rest, as you, I have been hoarding for 10 years ( I hadn't discovered Steiner) , then when I mount, I give away / sell the duplicates.

Here's one I posted on SCF four or five years back: On a points-down-burelage 5M overprint. Makes for a busy little stamp.

...and it was your post that drew my attention, when I saw the stamp on ebay. Must be difficult determining colour, yours looks like Lilac. Here is what I think maybe grey , points up. I am surprised Scott do not mention the flag opt, I looked everywhere for it when I first saw it. Had to default to Gibbons Centre Inverts (Possibly Proofs) Circa 2012

I agree, grey points-up.
In case anyone else reading along wonders what we're talking about, the burelage overprint is found in points-up and points-down orientations. The best way I can describe the difference is to imagine asking a five-year-old child to draw waves on an ocean, and turn the page slightly to the right. The points of the waves will point toward the upper right corner. That would be "points up" burelage. In "points down" the waves point to the lower left. Someone else want to take a shot at a better description?

Slogan Cancel on the 25 Pfennig Brosen Beach Red Translation : Would this read "Danzig A Ripe Target ! " ? That's a long S in the German Fraktur script, not an F. So, Reiseziel = travel / holiday destination. There's an excellent German / English dictionary online, much superior to Google Translate for individual words or short phrases - it's LEO, with the lion in the Sherlock Holmes outfit! Ryan

Most of these are towns I already had, but I will generally pick up nice strikes of anything that is not a "Danzig" cancel... Oliva: Tiegenhof: Praust: and a new one, to me, Steegen:
