Hi, GB is not an area I specialize in, but I do grab classics that catch my eye, such as the Seahorses issues of WWI era and of 1934. My 2006 Scott catalogue is showing the used 179-181 set @ $380. but I got them for just a tiny fraction of that. I see on ebay and other places that they sell for only a pittance and I wonder why is there such a complete disconnect between Scott and reality? Now I know that real world prices for almost everything is quite a bit less than Scott, but I have an old Minkus that shows the set at over 180 buck.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that you paid 10% of CV. Maybe less. With most GB items from the Classic era, CV means nothing unless you are talking about truly exceptional examples. If you can live with centering that is just a bit off, or a less-than-desirable cancel, the price drops significantly. In some cases SG's pricing is even more optimistic than Scott's.

You may well have got a great deal, or you could have very well paid exactly what they are worth to GB collectors. We will never know without an image of the stamps you have purchased. Proper identification and top-drawer condition is everything with these if you are looking to collect them as an investment. If you plan on creating a study collection of them then grab them as you see them, whatever the cost. You will also have to watch out for forged copies if you really like the blue and the green ones! Have a good one, Inspektor

Have a good one, Inspektor I agree with what has been said earlier in this thread regarding the quality of the Seahorses. That said the example you have shown at the base of your thread is only a good used example. Any cancel that hits any part of the royal head, reduces the value of the stamp. While it is quite easy to buy stamps of this nature, it is not so easy to sell them. The best way to collect early G.B. is still 'mint' and for that, you will need a few thousand pounds.

You may well have done sir, the thing about buying stamps on line is the usual absence of exact watermark information. With the set you mention, this is crucial and makes a difference of thousands of pounds.

Well, maybe not super cheap, but affordable enough indeed... I was able to win this copy of the 10 shillings 1934 issue at my monthly online auction.

I'm no expert on these Seahorse stamps & just getting around to (looking) to purchasing some for my unmounted mint GB collection. I've just listed the one in the scan, on eBay @ £12 sterling. Its type A as far as I know with paper adhesion on the back so un-soaked. I would like to know some opinions from you experts on quality price etc about it if possible. Have a nice day.

Being no expert on Seahorses,I cannot say from the scan what print the 5 S actually is. However the condition looks like: Two of the lower perfs are missing, the edges of the stamp are stained and there is some (suspicious) paper adherent. Maybe the stamp is from an old album, where it was glued in with some water-insoluble adhesive.Maybe... The cancellation is illegible. A fair price for this stamp would be 5 % catalogue or less.I personally would not buy it at any price, because it would annoy me every time, when I open my GB album.

Thanks for the reply salentin. I thought someone would mention the lower perforations. Funnily enough they are there but with thick brown paper from the original paper/envelope, overlapping them, it looks like they are missing. 5th one from right & 1 at centre are missing. (the paper hasn't been soaked off). There is also some blue print/ink marks on the back of the stamp under the brown paper which could account for some of the staining + dust or dirt. Its also had a stamp mount on over the brown paper at some stage. So I would say its been discarded from a collection. The lowest cat value I can find for the 5/- seahorses, Gibbons concise 2020 seems to be £175, used, (but I know there are a lot of varieties shades etc). I don't take a lot of notice of most cat values & try to get stamps in the best possible condition unmounted mint. I agree with the points you made although I don't think any adhesive has been on the back. Thanks again.

Have here a half crown and 5s pair. Measuring the height, they are both 21.8 ~ 22mm. Portrait engravings have horizontal lines only. 5s yellower on the back and showing colour through the back. Would indicate possibly De La Rue 1915 - 1918? Half crown I think is Waterloo Bros 1913? Interesting to note that the half crown is half a mm narrower than the 5s.

[ADMIN Note: This and the following 3 posts were merged from a different thread of the same subject.]Received these classics today. The re-engraved set of 3 unmounted mint never hinged. Should have got them years ago when they were cheaper, but my christal-ball was broken.

Hi Vickingeck, These ones not from BB stamps, I've seen a couple of sets on the BB website at around £660 pounds sterling, got these quite a lot cheaper but it took weeks of searching & waiting.

Interesting. sorry to be impertinent and cheeky. You did well then, BB gave us £500 for our three. So I Guess his £660 selling price is fair and what he gave us was reasonable

Nice set. Congrats. In the past I managed to get the 276d and 5/-. The 10/- was out of my reach.

Nice set. Congrats. In the past I managed to get the 276d and 5/-. The 10/- was out of my reach. I'm currently looking at some more of the seahorses (various singles) but they are out of my reach also. Working back through QV as well so you can guess what the costs will be.
