I'm Jean from Regina, SK. I collected stamps as a teenager and into university. Don't ask what happened to my student loan money, but I did eventually decide I needed to eat more than collect stamps! I let the hobby drop until my own children showed an interest. I introduced them to the hobby, but it didn't stick. So it was dropped again. Fast forward to the empty nest years. The girls have moved far away, and left half finished albums behind. Hubby and I were talking about downsizing and getting rid of our stuff. I pull out my 8 binders worth of stamps to sell, only to get hooked again! Only this time I have a focus. I am focusing on Canada used (Lighthouse I album pre-1977), Canada mint inscription blocks, and a topical worldwide mint textile (not costume) collection. I am a fiber artist in real life. So I am here looking in increase my knowledge of stamps, and to sell/trade some stamps. I am on a number of stamp boards across the Internet, and go by hs2oca on all of them. So if you 'see' me on one of them, send me a PM and say 'hi' and tell me where you "know" me from.

Welcome to the board! I think most of us have had "pause years" in our collecting. I never gave it up, but there were years when the collection sat fallow while I was doing other things. Ebbs and flows, entirely normal and not unwelcome either.
We have quite a few here with interests in Canadian stamps, so here's hoping you'll show us some of what you have.

Welcome Jean!! A hobby is good for distractions from lives other trials.Glad your here and we would love to see your prizes. If you stick around we do have the occasional auction and numerous give aways here. I have been known to pass along my excess Canada which always seems to re-appear somehow. I put aside collecting while I raised four kids so I can understand what you mean.Mom still collects stamps at 95 so I guess it's never too late to get back to it.WELCOME

Thanks everyone. I'm on a steep learning curve now with reading library books on the subject. I had all of one book at my disposal as a teenager! A very basic kids beginner's book. Now I'm reading Otto Hornung. Much more interesting. Trying to read Dr. Mackay's "The Complete guide to Stamps & Stamp Collecting" but the print is very small and difficult for me to read. I am taking it a page at a time with breaks. My eyes are okay, just I strain a lot when reading fine print. I suspect I need new glasses. Does anyone know a good thread for resources? Hmm...I will poke around more... Here's one thing in my collection I just purchased off eBay lately...Canada's textile industry stamp...

Thanks everyone. Now I'm reading Otto Hornung. Bravo! One of my favourite Philatelic Journalists, along with Les Winnick from Canada. Stamp stories with Meat and Veg. Not many modern journalists seem to come to my notice, excepting one from a Scandanavian country, who's name escapes me right now. James Mackay is also a font of knowledge, you have chosen well. Welcome to the forum. If you decide to follow up on your Thematic :Textiles Go to "General Stamp Collecting" / Worldwide / Topical Stamp Collecting here and begin a new thread Thematic : Textiles A quick reconnoitre through my stamps, there were 40 or so worldwide to begin with. Good Luck.

Thanks Rod! I'm off to start another thread...which somehow seems appropriate considering my topical interest is textiles.

Frog, that engraver's slip is listed in Unitrade, but these particular stamps don't seem to have it. If they did, they'd be worth a few dollars more. Hi James! I'm actually originally a Maritimer who grew up in Alberta, met and married a guy who originated from the USA, and ended up living in Saskatchewan the last 20 years. I'm not sure what that makes me. I'm Canadian at least! Love Vancouver. My brother lives there.

Ryan and Philatelia, you're close! I'm a Caledonian. I have two daughters who are Haligonians. Steve, funny you should mention Cinderellas...I have these Staffa, Scotland 1p silver jubilee "stamps" (?!) I'm trying to offload. Two sheets of them. That's 200 stamps. Know any takers for them? I had them on e-Bay but only listed them as being shipped to Canada because I have no idea how to ship to another country so they would survive intact. Plus no idea what to charge for the shipping. Sorry the last row is cut off. My scanner bed isn't big enough for the entire sheet!

STAFFA--well-known with the wallpaper crowd; the scourge of serious collectors as there was no way any STAFFA "stamp" conceivably could have been "used" legitimately sorry, my Opa (German for grandfather) got me started collecting when I was a ten-year old in 1969.....drilled into me the "purist" genre of philately; which can basically boil down to two core beliefs: --It's not a stamp if you cannot or never were able to use it somewhere, someplace, to post a letter or pay somehow, for postal services ie Express, fees, registry etc. --It REALLY is a stamp once it has been USED, evidenced by its post-marking. Down boys, down! The story I heard about these cinderellas/local stamps is that the tourists that went to Staffa used to buy them on the ferry to mail letters back to mainland GB. Once the tourists and letters got to the mainland real stamps were put on them for the rest of the journey? At any rate, I really class them with cinderellas. I bought them as a naive teenage collector in 1977. Two sheets of them. For $10 CAD total (including shipping). I have no idea if they are worth the paper they're printed on. I need to find a book or resource on cinderellas. Any ideas anyone? For now I'll wait and bide my time posting and getting to know folks before posting them for sale on site. PS. Hi Jack! I've been to and through your fair city a lot traveling by car back and forth across Canada. We had a lovely week long vacation in Winnipeg a few years ago. Stayed a nice big old fashioned B&B and saw The Forks, the museum, the library (Hubby is a librarian), etc., and dined at various restaurants and cafes. My favourite wass the Danish Bistro.

There are people who collect such stuff and there are catalogues which list them as well. I have a CD-based catalogue by Ralph Phillips which lists all of these British locals (although I can't claim to be a collector, I do have a pile of them, and once I end up with a pile of something I usually end up with a catalogue too!). Thanks. I'm having problems deciphering the catalog notations though... I have 525 obviously. But what do they mean by "Set 47 Perf (2 values) Euro 3.00"? I figured out the 3.00 euro will be mint, and the 2.00 euro used. But just what is "Set 47 Perf"? And does the "2 values" mean for both of them together?

Set 47 is the complete set of 2 stamps, available only perforated, and yes, the value is for the complete set. (The Scott catalogue also does that for recent years, for many countries they give a price for the complete set only and not for individual stamps.) Set 48 was a set of 49 different gold foil stamps that commemorated British kings and queens - catalogue value for that set is €686.00!! As I said, there are people who collect such things - there might even be somebody willing to pay 686 Euros for a set of Staffa gold foil stamps (don't know who that might be, though ....). Ryan

If they did, they'd be worth a few dollars more. ============================================================================================= Hello Jean and welcome to the board. I have only joined a few weeks ago myself. The Textile stamps were printed on two Plates 1 and 2, each with 4 panes of 50 stamps, each pane was 5 wide x 10 tall. According to Unitrade, the two plate varieties (Engraver's Slip) are at position 41 and 47 of the Lower Left sheet of 50 stamps. Your LL Plate Block has position 41 and 47. It interesting that your stamps don't have the Engraver's Slip. This means that it was corrected. Ths would make it rarer since there would be fewer of them. On Ralph Trimble's website, he has a 3rd Re-entry variety from Plate 1 at the Upper Left Pane at position 40. Bottom of this webpage. re-entries.com/post_medallions.html

Thanks Ryan. I do not have the 1 1/2 p, thankfully...I think. Jim, good to see you here! And thanks for informing me of the textile industry re-entry. My magnifiers are 10x and 20x and not strong enough to see any re-entry lines. Though to be truthful, I can't figure out how to use this upside down 20x magnifying lens I have. It's driving me crazy! I want a 30x loupe. Do they come that strong? It would make sense if it was a re-entry. I bought them on e-bay and the guy selling them listed their SCV at $210. I couldn't find anything in the Textile Industry stamp in Unitrade for that value. I figured he was just tired and/or in a hurry and made a goof and swapped the digits for the engraver's error in there. It's SCV is $120 for all four corners. But maybe he didn't? Regardless, I got them for much, much, much less. From what I can see there is no engraver's error on these (using the 10x magnifier).

Here`s the listing in Unitrade describing the Engraver`s Slip. It`s actually quite hard to see.
