What I collect: Worldwide Stamps, Ephemera and Catalogues

I have started a worldwide textile collection. Any ideas on what to add? Hi Kate, A nice start. However........... With respect, you have began a nice "Show and tell", you have the "show" but not the "tell" Imagine a few years hence, another Lass comes along, with an interest in textiles, your thread will come across as a little bland. Share your knowledge, add some spice, tell us about the materials perhaps? the methods? even the country and the year of the stamp. Of course, it is not obligatory here, you do what you deem fitting, but just my suggestion to enhance and broaden your experience with Philately. There is a whole world of learning and display for you, It's early days and you'll soon learn more, perhaps even have a Phialatelic display of the history of textiles. Example: you could have a page of the African Mollusc shell, that gave the Romans their Official purple, etc etc The most amazing thing you'll learn, it will suddenly become the parameters are unending, the things you will cover in the story. Enjoy the ride. Tip: There exists a specialist information centre on Thematics, called the ATA -American Topical Association, no doubt, they will have a vast checklist on stamps covering Textiles. You may wish to chase that up one day.

Thanks Rod. I'm Jean, not Kate...though I do have a daughter named Kate...well, Katrina actually. Argh! posted too soon. Wanted to add I do not know much about the stamps other than what is evident from looking at them. They were recent gifts, except for the overstamped Canadian textile ones, and I realize I have to do some research (okay, a lot!). Thank-you for the suggested of the American Topical Association. I'm assuming they take memberships from around the world (ie. out of USA)? Never mind...I'll check their site. I can add that the Canadian Textile Industry stamps are number O38 in the Unitrade Canadian catalogue. I am assuming that is a Scott number. I do not have catalogues to look up the other stamps. Will have to borrow some from the library. Zipper, thanks for your welcome.

Hi Jean, I'll keep a lookout for textile-related stamps as I work through my collection. Here is a site on your topical that might be of interest to you. The US has issued several textile-related stamps...below are a few from the American Folk Art series: Scott 1748a; Quilts, multicolored, perf. 11, tagged, designed by Christopher Pullman, issued March 8, 1978. Scott 2238a; Navajo art (handmade blankets), multicolored, perf. 11, tagged, designed by Derry Noyes, issued September 4, 1986. Scott 2354a; Lacemaking, ultra & white, perf. 11, tagged, designed by Libby Thiel, issued August 14, 1987.

Jean,On my next trip to moms I'll check to see if she still has her older catalogs about. My sister replaces them for her about every five years. If I find them I'll let you know.In my world that's recycling. They won't be new but they could be yours.

Frog, it depends where you live and what shipping is like? Not sure, but I'd love some catalogues, even old ones! Steve, those are exactly the type of stamps I'm after! Thank-you for such lovely clear images. And thanks for the link. I'm there now and it looks like a good site. I think I know what I'll be doing today.

The American Topical Association publishes checklists for hundreds of different topics, available to ATA members only. They also publish "lists of lists", showing which topics they have available and how many stamps are listed in each topic (their checklists cost 1 penny per stamp listed, so a list with 300 stamps would cost $3). If you look under the Culture section and the Art subsection, they have many subtopics listed under Textiles. Some may be of direct interest, like Spinning Wheels (I wonder if they include Indian flag stamps there) or Weaving. Some are a bit out in left field, like Clothing / Fashion. But it does appear that there is a lot for you to collect! ATA list of topicsRyan

A question...I have to ask because someone else brought it to my attention elsewhere...what did the textile industry have to do with winning the war? I remember vaguely someone telling me about the German soldiers freezing due to inadequate clothing and footwear, but nothing per se about the role of the textile industry in the war. Can anyone explain it or direct me to a resource?

Don't forget these from Canada. 1993 strip of 5. I think these also came in a Booklet which I don't have right now. But you can have these for Face Value plus 85c postage to SASK.Moderator: Please use either PM or the Forum's BST section (upon member eligibility) for any sales or trades.
Sorry - still a newb here - Jim

Rod, I bet it was nylon. Thanks for the link. Also, cool stamp, despite the heavy cancel! Jim, I already have that series of stamps from Canada. Though I will be looking for it in complete booklet form eventually.

Rod, nice stamps and postmarks! I joined the American Topical Association yesterday and talked to Vera. Nice lady. Ordered some textile lists as well. Waiting for them to arrive. She was going to get them to me yesterday but must have gotten busy. I don't see them in my inbox yet. Jean

Okay. I played with my scanner. The largest I could scan it was 600 dpi without getting a dialog box telling me I had to turn off "Skew Document", whatever that is, or reduce resolution or scale of the image. So I took the scan and put it into my photo editing program (PSE), enlarged it as big as I could without losing definition, and looked at the sucker through my 10x magnifier. I cannot find any engraver's mistakes in the lower left corner block. And I cannot see double lines that would indicate re-entry, but I do see thick lines that might be double lines if zoomed in on further. This is the lower left stamp of the lower left block.

Please pass on your experience with them over the coming weeks, shall be interesting.

Mmm...I had to join to get the detailed listings of the stamps in my subject area. I'm not a stamp club member yet, and have to wait till fall to become one. Our memberships here run from September to September. I'm not sure the club has access to the ATA lists anyways.
Be that as it may, Vera did say she'd have them out to me by last evening and I've yet to receive them. I'm hoping she's just a busy lady.
I was told it would take one to two weeks to process my credit card information. Apparently not too many people pay that way. They have it set up for Paypal, but I am unhappy with Paypal at the moment, as I prefer to use my card and they insist on taking money direct from my bank account.

...They have it set up for Paypal, but I am unhappy with Paypal at the moment, as I prefer to use my card and they insist on taking money direct from my bank account. The default payment method after drawing down on any Paypal balance is to take the funds from the linked bank account. However, you can change the method to draw from a credit card account that you have on file.
