After a very long wait, I was finally able to complete my collection of the Kansas-Nebraska overprints (Scott 658-679; May 1, 1929). Per Scott, stamps with original gum have either one horizontal gum breaker ridge per stamp or portions of two at the extreme top and bottom of the stamps, 21mm apart. In his book How to Detect Damaged, Altered, and Repaired Stamps, Paul Schmid states that genuine Kansas and Nebraska overprints measure about 9.25 and 9.0 mm, respectively. He also notes that genuine overprints exist only on the 1929 shades of the perforated 10.5x11 set.

I have a copy of that APS booklet and when I bought it I was a bit surprised to find that 2/3 of it had to do with First Day Covers! Oh well, there's still plenty of good info in the 10 pages dealing with the counterfeits.

So what's the big to do about these overprints?? Are they extra valuable or something or just a preference?? Partly their history They were a failed attempt at overprinting to thwart thieves who stole stamps in one state and then sold them in other parts of the country. Partly the effort to get them all Getting a full set is both expensive ($1000-$2000+ if MNH) and challenging particularly given the abundance of forgeries.
The gum breakers and perforation mentioned above will catch 95%+ of the fakes Beyond that; When compared to originals, the fakes are a different color (most fakes are a brighter shade) and the overprints are naturally different in size and shape.

So what's the big to do about these overprints?? Are they extra valuable or something or just a preference?? The overprints are what remains of a failed Post Office Department experiment intended to deter the theft of stamps. As originally formulated, the plan was to overprint stamps with the names for all 48 states and distribute them to all but the largest post offices in the respective states. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing objected but they did agreed to overprint stamps for Kansas and Nebraska which were in the territory of the postal inspector who originally devised the plan. The stamps created great confusion and the experiment was cancelled in less than one year.

Genuine Templates
Although there are methods that eliminate the fakes fairly easily, a few are very dangerous. The overprint then needs to be carefully studied and measured but comparisons to a genuine are very difficult.
SO, I made transparent templates by using overprints with several recent certificates.
Example
This is the transparent template
This is a negative of a stamp provided by a TSF member
This is the template superimposed over the TSF stamp A PERFECT MATCH!
I do not collect US anymore and my set of these overprints is long gone but this "might" be helpful to some. Copy & download the templates here OR send me 1 of your overprints (min 600DPI and very good quality) and time permitting I will do an overlay. To do a test yourself, you will need a program that can adjust the size of each to match and do a negative - RetroReveal is excellent for this
You still have to allow for inking variations but the template will provide size and position of the letters.

When I first replied to the post by beezy07, the only post I saw was his. When next I viewed subsequent posts, the whole thing appeared. Sorry for that post I made. I wasn't shown the previous posts the first time I read it!

No need to apologize as the initial post was made in beezy07's introduction thread -- I moved both his and your post to the appropriate thread.

I agree. No need for apologies. I'm very thankful to have you guys to turn to I know some but very little about this stuff. Lol. So I appreciate any feedback right or wrong the effort is what's important to me! I'm going to the library tomorrow to check out a couple stamp catalogs. Any suggestions or does anyone need specific information from any particular book? I'll get it while I'm there or at least look it up while I'm there. Let me know I got you!! I just ordered like 1,000 stamps today!! Lol. I'm gonna be busy first a bit
