None of my India stamps are even close to that one, that is a real beauty. They seemed to go in for very heavy cancels over there.

Very sharp Victoria. Here is SC#33: The early Victorias were pleasing in their clean design. On the other end of the spectrum, George V kicked it up a notch: The 8-anna example from the Jubilee set. India's Jubilee effort is evocative of the omnibus set, with its own panache. Each stamp featured a different design, and there were more values than a typical omnibus Jubilee issue. You probably couldn't call the designs clean, but they are attractive in their own way, too.

I agree -not clean, but beautiful. Personally I prefer the KGV; the QV issues are appealing , but a little too sterile for my taste.

I like the consular cancel...Liberty taking a rest? Taking a breather from cooking by the looks of it. Is that a giant rolling pin she is leaning on?

Displaced Persons MailThe Soviet Union deported tens of thousands of Polish civilians to Russia in the opening months of the Second World War. The Sikorski–Mayski agreement signed after the German invasion of the Soviet Union granted "amnesty" to many of the civilians. The most direct route out of Russia to Allied lands was to the south, across the Caspian Sea to Persia. The men were sent onto Iraq and Palestine for military training. Others were sent to New Zealand, Mexico, East Africa and India. Old people and children were sent to India, where four camps were established to house the arrivals. In June 1943 a camp for Polish refugees was opened at Valivalde, 290 km south of Bombay, India. Indian Experimental Post Office B-550 was opened to service the postal needs of the camp. The camp's population was generally around 4,000. The camp was closed in February 1945. This cover is dated 25 October 1944, addressed to the Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland, and received a 'T' marking for deficiency in postage. The item was examined by two censors, with a single line censor handstamp 'DHC/318' in violet on the front, and crowned 'PASSED DHC/66' handstamp on the reverse.
