As most of the planet knows by now, the Crimean Peninsula was seized by the Russian Federation and taken from Ukraine.
The Crimean Peninsula is the ethnic home of the Crimean Tatars. After World War II, Stalin force relocated the Tatars out of Crimea in retaliation for what he believed was their sympathizing with enemy forces.
The Soviet Union moved Russians into the region in place of the Tatars.
With the fall of the Soviet Union, Tatars began to slowly move back into the Crimean Peninsula, though even in 2015, they were still outnumbered by the ethnic Russians and Ukrainians that lived there.
From my discussion with family still back in Ukraine, the Tatars were EXTREMELY OPPOSED to Russia taking back the Peninsula, since the Russians kicked them out the first time. But the region is primarily Russian now. There have been numerous reports since the takeover that the Tatars are being discriminated against, and a lot of them are worried that they'll be force relocated again.
Ukraine granted Crimea the designation of Autonomous Republic, which allowed them to self-govern themselves, as long as they adhered to the Ukrainian Constitution, do not raise a military, and consider themselves Ukrainian. This was done out of respect for the Ukrainain Tatars, and not the Russian population.
So, now that you have the background....
Ukraine issued a series of 4 stamps on May 14th titled: "Кримські татари – корінний народ Криму," which literally translates to "Crimean Tatars: the indigenous people of Crimea." But to my ears, it translates to "Crimean Tatars - The Heart of Crimea" or "Crimean Tatar - The True People of Crimea."
it is a nice tribute as well as an interesting propaganda piece by Ukraine.
Here's what the four stamps look like:
First stamp:
Here we have Tatars in traditonal dress, dancing a trandtional dance known as the "Haytamara"
Second Stamp:
This is Crimean Tatar Rider, as the would have dressed when the Cossacks controlled Ukraine.
Third Stamp:
Master Coppersmith
Fourth Stamp:
Durbe, the home of the first Criema Khans.
Some fine looking stamps!
