Wow this is crazy! I wonder how postal rates compare across the world to see if this is in line with other countries or not? The US rate seems about half of what we are paying. We are already looking at losing our door to door service as it is.

IT makes me wonder if the P.O. is trying to discourage people from mailing letters and packages.

I think they are trying to discourage usage, I really do. It seems all they want to deliver is junk mail/flyers and packages from online orders.
BTW that chart above is pretty interesting, though the Canada rate listed is not current. It costs 85c now or $1 if you buy the stamp individually (yet another cash grab move!). Even with the current US exchange rate, that equates to 0.67 USD.

Katie, there is a continental shift in the Post Office worldwide, No one posts letters anymore, we have emails, twitter, facebook, mobile tablets etc&etc The basic bones of the Post Office, is no longer there, they are merely a transfer house for products purchased online, basically a parcel distribution centre. We have to pay for that. Don't blame the Post Office for Junk Mail, advertising is the curse of the 20th Century it infests everything The Post Office is merely carrying out customers requests. I use the paper for my garden compost. I no longer watch my Tour de France cycling, Football or cricket, due to advertising (seems to be about every 11 minutes I am interrupted) If I have to, I tape, then fast forward through the junk, but mainly avoid the TV more and more.

That is sad but true. Sooner than you think it will only be stamp collectors sending anything by mail (and online orders of course!). I suppose I should be happy they are still issuing stamps at all.
I was speaking to my mailman a few weeks ago and he told me our community will be one of the last converted to community mailboxes, I will miss my door to door service. Feels like a kick in the pants after having a 25c increase in postage rates, and now talk of yet another one.
I don't even mind the junk mail that much, it gets recycled or I might even look at it from time to time.

The Canada Post increase may be needed to pay for the installation of all of those community mailboxes that no one seems to want!
As to junk mail, I keep most of those printed on cardstock to use as stiffeners for stamp mailings and recycle the rest.
I must confess that I haven't been putting commemorative stamps on mailings to collectors for quite some time because I won 5 coil rolls of forever stamps at a deeply discounted price (3 of the Four Flags type and 2 of the Flag for All Seasons) and need to work my way through those before purchasing any additional stamps.

If you have spare to sell me a PNC strip of each flag stamp it would be great. I'll cover all costs and it will help you get back to using commems more quickly !!!
