Hello everyone,
My name is Rudy and after many, many years I'm re-starting my stamp collection. Another hobby to keep me happy and out of trouble. I kept all my stamps from over 40 years ago and now I'm looking into British Commonwealth stamps from the 19th century thru WW2. I have to read again and re-learn all the terminology and what is out there now for collecting. I'm also looking for a good magazine for the area that I'm collecting - any suggestions. Any help would be appreciated. Looking forward to posting and reading/learning.
Regards, Rudy

Regards, Rudy Hi Rudy, welcome to the forum, not sure if any magazine would be specific enough, most have to deal with the broad spectrum of Philately. Perhaps begin with a good stamp catalogue, say up to 2010 Scott is a good catalogue to employ, with Stanley Gibbons catalogue for Commonwealth fly specking for varieties.

Rudy, if you go the Scott route, which I would recommend, try to locate the 2009 Scott catalogue on CD. It makes your stamp collecting, so much smoother, when you can move between your Album page, and ID on screen. One of the best Philatelic creations in the history of entry level Philately, in my opinion.

Hi Rudy, Welcome and great to have you here.
You may want to try to absorb the mountain of information that has made it to the internet instead of subscribing to a magazine. You could probably use that money to buy an iPad to keep you connected more often.
There really are alot of web pages out there now about stamps and stamp collecting for any country.
Jim

Thanks for the tips guys. Rod222 - just looked up the 2009 scott catalog on CD - looks like 6 cd's at around $109. jimjung - probably good idea - like I said been away for 40 years. Thanks Steve - I realize the importance of a forum as my main hobby is military - WW2 and I'm sure you might have heard that is a minefield for collectors. Question - Is there somewhere on this forum that lists e-bay losers?? I would hate to buy from sellers that sells forgeries. Regards, Rudy

Regards, Rudy Rudy, I don't think there is much to inoculate yourself against nefarious vendors. 1. You can advertise the link here, and we all can have a look for you. 2. You can follow our member here "classical stamps" and his forgery link, gives a broad range of countries and forgeries. stampforgeries.com/3. You can befriend a dealer that will offer genuine stamps, and if you find one that slips through, you can return for credit. 4. You can join a local stamp club, oodlies of friendly knowledge in stamp clubs. (and often cheaper stamps)

With the Scott on CD, you may be able to load into your Hard Disk Drive, gives fast seamless manipulation. A big advantage for Thematic (You suggest military) you can (don't ask me how though search the Whole world in the Scott catalogue for stamps that suit your interest.

Welcome Rudy. With eBay you have 6 months protection as a buyer, if you are unhappy eBay will put a freeze to the vendors PayPal account and 99% the buyer wins. But to quote you its a minefield plenty of scammers on the auction sites. When buying Scott cd make sure when you receive them that they are genuine, I bought from a vendor and got a set of burnt copies, I checked them first on a old laptop in case they had virus etc. Just ask the vendor if they are genuine and if not you will want a return. If you see any vendors that look sketchy put a link here, or even better just upload the image that way you wont be sharing what you found, many times someone puts a link to a auction and wonder why so many people bid and they lost. If you not sure about a stamp post here and within a day you will probably have the Scott number and SG number. For magazines you will be able to view the APS monthly magazine here as a member, check out members blogs and sites thestampforum.boards.net/board/166/member-blogs-websites Big Blue will keep you reading for weeks all the information is on the web just a matter of finding it, its one of the goals of this forum to gather it all and have it here
