What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many, many catalogues ....

I see we have not yet had any posts showing stamps from the Netherlands Antilles. Here's an oldie but goodie from the olden days of King William III, the last King before 120+ years of Queens as monarch. Very nice example of early typography with fine lines, quite a bit better looking than the coarser typographed stamps of many other countries. This one has some nibbled perfs in the upper right - oh well, I suppose William III doesn't mind so much any longer. Scott #8 from 1886, yet another example of the Scott catalogue's curious notions of what exactly the colour "yellow" might be... The Netherlands Antilles can now be considered a dead country, I suppose. In 1986, the island of Aruba broke off from the Antilles and in 2010, the remainder of the Netherlands Antilles dissolved. Curaçao and Sint Maarten became separate "constituent countries" like Aruba (citizens of these three countries are all still Dutch just like people from the Netherlands proper), and three remaining islands became "special municipalities" of the Netherlands. Old stamps like the one shown here were labelled "Curaçao" until 1949, after which the Dutch name "Nederlandse Antillen" came into usage. Ryan

As a kid I loved the airmails. Beautiful bicolor stamps. Even though they are past my arbitrary cutoff of 1940, I still think they're great. I see I don't seem to have any scanned yet...
