I found this in a group of 11 x 10c Consort stamps. Any guesses as to what variety this stamps has? A collector friend explained to me that: "Estate items that were collected years ago can hold unseen value when the previous owner is no longer around to advise."

Ebay vendor quotes "no hidden faults" I think I see a rip in the paper, in the area you mentioned. Caveat Emptor.

Seller offers full refund within two weeks.I can't see tear on back scan so I'm a gambling on it. Fair enough. I see line I would consider as a rip on the back also, but as long as you are aware, Froggie. Good Luck, I hope I am wrong. Vendor shows excellent feedback, so looks like you are in good hands. An ultra violet lamp would show any hidden nasties.

I think Rod is correct...it appears to be a repaired tear.

Looks low risk, except for your time, as the seller has good marks. (Unless the seller were to take the position that this wasn't hidden, I suppose.)
If I only saw the front, I'd say repaired tear dropping down and curving to the right. On the back, that should appear as dropping down and curving to the left. What I imagine I see on the back drops down and to the right, too, so I don't know. From the back, I thought the start of the tear was visible in the side of a perf, but now I wonder if that is a black mark, like the others on the back?
Frog, if you win it, you'll have to report back when you have it in hand.

If it makes you feel any better, the person who got it had been in since nearly the beginning, and did it manually.

The main marks of the Double Epaulettes variety are disguised by the cancel, but once mentioned, you can see the marks between the grid lines above the Prince's shoulders. On the left side of the stamp, you can also see more dots and dashes above the Prince's shoulders. This is indeed the Double Epaulettes Misplaced Entry - Scott 17v. I was surprised that such a well-known variety could be missed, hence the quote above.

Gosh. maybe I should post some Decimal Issue stamps on eBay ... that does look like a tear to me in the upper right corner - big one, too. frog, if you'd like to buy any decimal issue stamps, I can certainly do better than that. If you're interested, I have quite a few nice ones of every value for you to look at.

Jimjung If you go to the funky frog collection thread you'll see I'm wealthy with numerous copies of all values as well. The ten cent has always been my favorite issue. One of my first donations to the forum was a # 17 on cover. I've been adding to my pages since I scanned them ,not sure when I'll get back to scanning more but still plan to post more from my volumes of Canada and provinces.

frog, I've seen your collection on that thread and you have a very nice and quite extensive Canada collection. Please note that I know many of the serious Decimal Issue collectors. My own small collection of Decimal Issue stamps and covers are housed in a 2" binder for the stamps and a 4" binder for the covers. Here's a nice 1c with plate imprint at the top - position 3. There are two plate scratches at the top left which are Constant and exist on the Proof Sheet.

Thanks for the kudos jimjung. As most specialist collectors of any time, I keep adding to my pages constantly and any scans are just those at the time.I wonder when I start on an issue when my interest will fade and I move on to the next. Most of my early issues are in need of re-mounting almost all the time.the rule of thumb at this time is one stamp per page but,I can see the need for multiple pages per stamp as it grows...and I used to just cover the picture in the album...

I have between 5-12 stamps per page as I like to group them together in some organized fashion. Mint ones together, Imprint copies together, special cancels, paper types, etc. I'm starting to have organized pages in more and more different group types. Here is a link to my 1c Decimal Imprint copies album page that you (or anyone) can download and print. There are a few of these Imprint positions that have Constant Plate Varieties. One being the Position 3 Plate Scratch above, then Whitworth's Plate Flaw 12 at position 71 - shaded mark in A of POSTAGE (below), and last, position 94 with the Minor Re-entry at the lower right corner inner frameline (2nd stamp below with closeup).

Marvelous Jimjung,I guess I'm headed in right direction. When did you begin to actually get started on your study ? You know the transformation from collector to Collector. I can't imagine it easy to find even half of what you have found.

frog, I checked Whitworth's: The First decimal Issue of Canada, the bible to this issue and saw no plate position that has these marks on the 17c Cartier. My guess is that this is a Kiss Print. If I can have a regular scan of the entire stamp, I could be more sure. Here is an example of a Kiss print on this stamp. Look around the VEN of SEVENTEEN.

Thanks for that jimjung.I accept that as the answer as it definitely is a lot like your example.Wonder why it also shows in the margin, must have been early on a Monday or late on a Friday.Another interesting item added out of an ordinary bunch purchased.I love to think it makes the purchase wise.

That's a pretty strong one frog. What happened was the front of the stamp picked up ink from another sheet while it was being moved around, possibly in stacked sheets. Since the ink was still a bit wet, it smeared onto the design. Usually it shows on the back of the stamp, and less often, on the front.

I've been trying to catch up on some older stamps waiting for my attention.I picked up a lot of numerous copies of #15 the beaver stamp, a common stamp found in most collections. What I've found is numerous copies have a colored dot in the "C" on cents but on others there is no dot. Does anyone know what this is all about ? I am guessing I need to purchase another book. Was this another state of plate used ? I know enough to look at the stamp but not enough to understand the why.

The book to get here is called: "The First Decimal Issue of Canada". There is a 2nd book that concentrates only on the 5c called "The Five Cents Beaver Stamp of Canada". Both books by Geoffrey Whitworth. I recommend the 1st book. This will give you all the info you need on this stamp issue, especially the 5c Beaver. The general price is $15-$20, not expensive and fairly easy to find. For the 5c, there were 11 different states of the plate and the "C" dot is sometimes missing. It can be used to help in plating. I've studied this issue for many years so please ask any questions you may have. The 5c is a great stamp to look for re-entries and plate flaws ! Here are a few oddities that I've found recently: Marks left of CA of CANADA Mark above O of POSTAGE Re-entry all four corner framelines - I always check the framelines first !

Jim somehow I knew you'd pick up on that post. Thanks for the tip on those books. I plan on a more extensive work on this issue soon. I'm presently stuck in the Centennial series. The issue was never my favorite and I avoided getting to work on it for forty years now. The day has come and I'm much crazier than when I started.

Here is the Major Re-entry on the 12 1/2c. This stamp was used for Trans Atlantic postage to the UK via the Allan Line ships.

Jimjung,in going through a bunch of long neglected #18s I've come across one that looks to have a guide dot, printed on thin oily type paper.Do you have any idea of this one?Not real sure but could also be another slip print/or just lint covered plate.
