What I collect: USA to fill album holes/varieties. Older W/W Airmail

Hi All, Been sorting thru some Flag For All Season stamps. I have them all sorted out except I'm unable to differentiate between the 4782-4785 and the 4782a-4785a. If I'm not mistaken, the only difference is the tagging. I do have a shortwave UV light, but all my 4782-4785's tagging looks the same under UV. And they all look the same as the tagging on the other FFAS stsmps. Is there another way besides tagging to differentiate between the 4782-4785 and 4782a-4785a. Thanks in advance for any help.

You can also distinguish most of them by the position of the straight edge due to their position on the booklet. Underlined means the straight edge configuration CANNOT be used to distinguish without resorting to using a UV lamp:
4782 (top, left & top), 4782a (left, left & top, or left & bottom) 4783 (top, right & top), 4783a (right, right & top, or right & bottom) 4784 (bottom, left & bottom), 4784a (left) 4785 (bottom, right & bottom), 4785a (right)
So you can see, there are really only 2 special cases in which position cannot positively ID tagging type: left & stop straight edges for 4782 & 4782a, and right & top straight edges for 4783 & 4783a
Hope that helps. Sorry I cannot explain it any more clearer. But if you look at the full booklet pane (both sides), it will be easier to understand how that straight-edge "chart" is compiled. The blocks for 4782-4785 were arranged horizontally on the booklet pane. The blocks for for 4782a-4785a were arranged vertically on the booklet pane.

Thanks khj, That will give me a start. If I can positively identify a few by straight edge, perhaps I can see the difference in tagging and go from there.
Does anyone else have input? Would appreciate it. In my looking into this, I found where someone had made an album page with all the 2013 varieties and made it available for anyone to download, print out, and use. Hopefully I can find it again and if so, plan to use it. Would like to post a scan once I get it done.

Don't forget, I'm disregarding 4782b-4785b. You will need to weed those out of your pile first.
Have fun!

Unless your eyes are going kaputt, like mine... Don't know how flyspeckers managed to keep it going before the coming of 1200dpi scanners!

Hi khj,
Thanks to your help, I have it figured out. Based on the straight edge list you provided I was able to determine which ones were 4782-4785. I also found that I had only one 4782a and one 4784a. Then I was able to compare the Short Wave UV for the 4782-4785 vs 4782a-4785a. What I found was that on the 4782-4785, the red and blue color of the flag is noticeably brighter under SW UV compared to the 4782a and 4784a. Then i was able to look at the ones I could not determine by straight edge (4782/a left & top and 4783/a right & top) and determine by SW UV that they were 4782s and 4783s.
Thanks again... oldtriguy <><
