Greetings and thanks for letting me join your group. My name is James Carpenter and I am very new to stamp collecting. I have acquired a few boxes of stamps and covers at a garage sale and am slowly sifting through them. As well, I have some stamps that my father collected as a kid in the 20s and 30s. I live in Saranac Lake New York. Our library is small and only has only one outdated book on collecting and pricing. I am hoping if I have questions somebody might know the answer. Thanks again..James

Thanks again..James Welcome James, Hope you enjoy your stay. If I were beginning again, I would seek out "Scott Stamp Album Catalogue on CD Rom 2009" That has world stamps Collect all stamps, until you find an affection to a particular country / theme. Read "Stamp Collecting 101" www.inheritedstampcollection.com/chapter_02.htmPractice "Stamp hinging" ... The target is, you should be able to wet (damp) a hinge, attach a stamp to a page, wait a few hours till it's dry, then peel off the page without damage to the paper or stamp. This is a real skill, a normal budget German hinge, $4 per 1000 , with the very faintest of moisture (I use a damp finger ) should finally bring success. Tear the page , or the stamp, you have to try again. Hope that helps.

Welcome to the Forum!
You've met the introduction requirement so I've updated your membership status to enable you to participate in any area of the forum except the Buy/Sell/Trade board.
A good catalog(s) is a necessity to help you determine what you have but there are several workarounds available, depending on your collecting interest.
Are those boxes filled primarily with U.S. material or do they have a worldwide flavor?

A bit of everything Steve. I also have a few boxes of covers. (Until yesterday I did not know they were called "covers".) They are mostly from the early 40s but some earlier. I made my first post and in US Classics and included a picture of four "carrier" stamps...at least that's what I think they are. I agree with you regarding the catalog and have on order the Scott Catalog...seems to be what everyone uses.

Hello and welcome. Thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself. Sounds like you found what I have been looking for. Love the garage/yard sale lots, you never know what's inside.
I sure many a quality collection gathered dust and was disposed of at a yard sale.
When you get your catalogue you will have fun, you should look into a stockbook or stock pages to keep what you find in order, easy to slip a small piece of paper with info on it.
Best thing with this hobby is you do it what ever way you want, some members have created beautiful album pages and others like me stick them in a stockbook. I purchase a few nice binders and have made an attempt to sort them out.
Its a wonderful hobby, collect what you like you will notice that Cinderella's are very popular, keep your eye open you might have some in the collection and will not be in the Scott's catalogue.
