Bombadil's PanAm cover is fascinating. It must be genuine, but it also is mysterious. Why did PanAm send a cover to itself? And why was the cover sent without specific office addresses for the sender or recipient? No doubt the PanAm offices in both cities were small, but even corporate mail usually requires a designated sender (someone to charge) and a designated recipient. Who might have sent it? And who was the recipient?
Hold on; if PanAm was sending a letter to itself, why bother paying postage? Or am I plunging into a rabbit warren?

First flights were a big thing. They must have wanted a souvenir of the event. This is a cheap way to get something like that.

Not so much a first flight, but a cover commemorating the inauguration of the Hamilton Airfield. Sent by Westinghouse, who supplied the lights for the airfield. Enclosed letter I just realize that this letter was postmarked 90 years ago this coming Thursday! Happy anniversary.

A late example, and a good example of how these evolved: first flight on a shared route, SAS/Swiss Air, Geneva/Stockholm. Purely philatelic and a little mass produced looking with the Vasa cache and pre-printed address.

Here is a first-flight cover I collected for also being a stamp dealers cover, the Multnomah Stamp Company owned by Myron McCamley; an association cover addressed to George Linn, founder, publisher, and editor of Linns Stamp News; for having a biplane bullseye cancel on the stamp; for having a recognizable drawing of a Boeing Model 40A mail plane in the cachet; and for the striking baggage label on the reverse depicting a Boeing Model 80 passenger and mail airplane. While it could go in several of my cover collections, I chose to place it in my collection of association covers because of George Linn's prominence and the earlier Columbus, Ohio, address for Linn's Weekly Stamp News.

First Flight, Chicago to Zurich, 1949. I've been keeping an eye out for appealing covers dated April 1st. This cover missed by a day, but I liked it enough to add it to the Chicago collection.

Back in October, 1939, the U.S.Post Office Department inaugurated a new special use envelope specifically for special delivery. It was to be distinctive in that its border would consist of alternating green and yellow half circles. A copy of The Postal Bulletin authorizing and describing this new envelope is posted below. The premise behind this envelope was to make a special delivery letter immediately identifiable without reference to the amount of postage on an envelope and thus expedite handling. To this end the special border was also continued on the reverse. It was a good idea, but the public did not embrace this special envelope the way it did airmail envelopes. While not rare, these special delivery covers are not seen frequently. When I see a non-philatelic use of one I try to buy it if not too pricey. I only have three of these envelopes, one philatelic usage and two commercial, one of which is an airmail special delivery usage posted below. It carries twenty-one cents of metered postage, which I believe was the correct rate for domestic airmail special delivery in October 1945, i.e. eight cents postage and thirteen cents special delivery fee. Posted Oct 22nd, there is a backstamp showing receipt in the San Jose, CA., post office on October 24th. I like the handstamp in the upper left corner asking recipients to salvage the envelope for the war effort. Someone went a step farther and saved it for us collectors. A souvenir airmail cover intended to commemorate the visit of U.S. Army Air Corps pilots to Pearson Field, Vancouver, WA, in 1931. I collected the cover for the inclusion of the 2 centavos Spanish stamp, Sc 420, from the privately produced Christopher Columbus set issued Sept. 29, 1930. It looks like someone, perhaps the addressee, was trying to make the cover a little different and succeeded by getting a nice, clean U.S. cancel on a foreign stamp.

Here are a couple more first flight covers. The first from Newfoundland is possibly just a reuse of the envelope at a later date. Inaugural Flight of Pan-Am from Botwood, Newfoundland. The second seems more authentic, First Official Flight from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to Grindstone Island, Quebec with the appropriate postmark shown on the reverse. Here is a cover from the first flight over the South Atlantic, from Senegal to Natal, Brazil, in May 1930. It is signed by the pilot, Jean Mermoz.
On the return trip, the plane crashed but the pilot was rescued. On a later flight in 1936, the pilot was not so lucky. Neither him nor the plane was ever found.
