I'm still in the "accumulation" mode for Italy. I know this is not the entire "series", and I haven't checked perfs, watermarks, or paper, but here's about 50% of what I have:

The Floral series Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoia ascended the throne in the summer of 1900, following the sudden death of his father King Umberto the Ist murdered with a gunshot on the 29 of Jul 1900 in the city of Monza . With the succession to the throne it becomes necessary to replace all the value cards and obviously the stamps, here the birth of the floral series in complete art noveau style also called Liberty .

Icame across a legal sized envelope labeled: "Modern Italy- loose" Inside, was this: not so modern, on a page torn from an album. My references for Italy are poor/lacking (thus far)- so if anyone canshed light on this, my appreciation!

stainlessb, these are parts of a set of parcel post stamps overprinted for regular postage in 1890 and have Scott nos. 60, 61, 62, and 63. They have a pretty good catalogue value in mint condition.

This stamp is called "Michetti" (from the name of his designer) said on the right (because the King Vittorio Emanuele III looks to the right). It's said that Gabriele D'Annunzio (the poet) suggested to his friend Michetti, to add the sea as a background to the drawing of the stamp as a symbol of the King voyage Vittorio Emanuele III in the Aegean sea when he was informed of the assassination of his father King Umberto I . Michetti D'Annunzio I must said that this series is particularly dear to me and can offer many curiosities and can give lots of satisfaction. I would like to suggest to friend tobben63 to check perforation and watermark, it has some teeth a bit short but has an excellent centering, rare for this issue.

rex I will check this tonight. Italian stamps has a special place in my heart. Italy was the first country outside the Nordic countries that I started to collect. I put away all old Italian stamps for possibly later investigation.

The stamp with a pictorial subject reproduces a painting by Pietro Bonaccorsi, known as Perin del Vaga “Madonna with the Child” made in 1534.

The Italian post office commemorates the bicentenary of the death of Napoleon Bonaparte with the issue of this stamp. The image is taken from the painting executed by Andrea Appiani in 1805 and kept in the Ambrosiana Picture Gallery.

This thread dates back to 2013. Last post was from rex in May 2021. As I was doing some work on a big Italy binder received from a friend's late dad, I fell on this series, CASTLES 1980 - I am not into modern Italy but thought I would show you 99% of it as I am missing one (1), the 5 L St. Angelo castle. Decided to keep the series in my collection of "oldies". Since I have 4 Vario pages of "dups", if any member has spaces to fill, let me know - Scott 1409-1431 + 1475- 1479. I do not have the "coil" stamps.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

My travels through the large world wide lot of stamps finds me having arrived in Italy today. The previous owner had placed this used 1889 King Umberto I 5L, Scott 57 in a separate envelope so of course it sent me to my Scott catalogues and the internet to find out why. I quickly discovered that used copies have a high catalogue value. A few have sold on eBay for a fraction on the current CV some listings show as 800.00 ( prices realized 25.00 to 90.00 CDN). Scott advices that there are forged cancellations out there. I do not have a used or mint copy of this particular stamp so I will keep it. I do not feel it is worth having it verified.

The stamp is well centered and the cancellation also looks original, if the back is ok ..I agree with Roberto ameis33 should be appraised.

CANCELLATION ROUND SQUARED Adopted since the end of 1889 and supplied to all post offices including newly established and existing extra-urban offices whose stamps had to be replaced due to wear. The first stamps had 4 segments per corner, which later became 3. The diameter of the circle is usually 26-27 mm, and sometimes 25 or (rarely) 28. In case of doubts about the cancellation, this little research of mine verifies that the cancellation is contemporary with the postage stamp, in fact the stamp was issued on 1st August 1889. Now, ... for heaven's sake anything can be, if it's a fake it's well falsified.

Thank you to you and ameis33 for your input and especially for the explanation about the postmarks of that era. I have various Canadian stamps that were certified when I acquired them but I have never actually personally sent something to be appraised. There is a reputable firm here in Toronto that I will research to see if they appraise stamps and postmarks of Italy. Recent sales on eBay were at well below current catalogue values but none were certified. I am not about to sell it so that is a mute point.
