I picked up a bunch (well, 10) of these covers from my guy Ted a while ago and am just now getting them into the album. First I thought this guy Lane Bryant just got a lot of mail, then google told me he's actually a department store, catering to 'plus sized' women. I bought them not because they were beautiful, in fact they look quite common. But they all and interesting place names on their cancels. Trail BC, Wood Mountain SASK, Scotch Village NS, that sort of thing.
These two I'm going to show you I found quite interesting.
The first is sent from Halfway Ontario. Interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly, according to to the book Ontario Broken Circles (W. Bruce Graham, Postal History Society of Canada), there were two places in Ontario called Halfway, one in Renfrew County and the other in Nipissing County. This one, I've determined is from Renfrew, because the arches on the broken circle cancel measure 11.5mm. The Nipissing County broken circle arches measure 4-5mm. Also, according to the book, the latest usage of the Renfrew broken circle was January 14 1934, whereas mine is March 3 1951. Now before anyone test excited, the book was published in 1999, so I'm sure that 1934 date has been updated. I know they post updates in their journal and on their website, but I'm not a member (maybe someday) so I don't have access.
Also, the Halfway Ontario PO in Renfrew closed in 1967, so this is a dead PO
The second cancel I have no info on, but will start researching soon. It is a Machine cancel from Porcupine Plain Saskatchewan (Love the name!) date March 21 1951. But what I find interesting is the name CANADA is printed sideways between the CDS and the obliterator lines. I have just never seen one of these before. It is not mentioned, that I can find in my Early Rapid Cancelling Machines of Canada book by Sessions (yes, I finally found it, thanks.)
So there you have it. Even the ugly ducklings can become swans.
