Here is a modern Israeli cover that has a lot of interesting elements (thanks LB1), despite the lack of cancels: On the top right of the cover are two non-denominated. I understand that they were issued as a kind of "make up" stamp during a period of high inflation, but I'm interested to see what they would be doing on this cover, with a variety of stamps of specific denominations. Londonbus1 , can you enlighten me?

Londonbus1 , can you enlighten me? Whilst Israel has had to issue a number of 'make-up' or 'Stand-By' stamps in it's lifetime, the two mentioned above are not these types. These two are the equivalent of 1st Class UK stamps or Forever USA stamps in that they can be used even if the rates go up [or down !]. The inscription on the stamps reads 'regular letter inland'. Of course they can be used at the current value for use on heavier items or letters abroad. The top one was issued in 1982 and is the only pre-1986 Israel stamp that can still be legally used today. The lower one was issued in 2005 from Self-Adhesive Booklets or sheets. This one was from a booklet. There are others similarly inscribed as Israel Post has a habit of changing their definitive series' at quite a rate !!
Shame about the cancels, seems to be the norm these days and not only Israel. Most of my mail from the UK and Canada does not get cancelled and from the USA it is just starting to be a regular occurrence too. That's life.

Here's one I sold recently on eBay. Nothing too special, but somebody wanted it.
I like how they treated the airmail etiquette like a stamp!

This bad boy measures approx. 7" X 10" and is an FDC of Israel with a Miqwa Yisrael registration label attached. Commemorating the Centenary of the establishment of the Miqwa Yisrael Agricultural School in 1870, it is franked with SC. 417, Yv 410, Ba 458, Mi. 473. The Hebrew inscription reads "Miqwa Yisrael 100 years old" and was issued and franked on May 6th, 1970. It bears the special cancellation from Miqwa Yisrael and was cancelled on 6/5/1970 with 2 back cancels from [Tel-Aviv] ?Yafo 151. I would like more information about the cachet-maker. I collect early Israel Philately. Also shown is a close-up of the hand cancellation on the back.

oldpapercollectYour cover is an interesting one. You ask who was the cachet maker but my response would be "is it a cachet" ? Is it not just a copy of the stamp, enlarged and stuck onto the envelope ? It appears that way but I stand corrected if not. Also, I don't see any address on the cover ? And why is the Postal Cancel on the back and the registration label on the front ? The Commemorative handstamp on the front is just that, not for postal use at all. All very interesting. The Stamp (and 'Cachet') are by renowned Israel Artist Eliezer Weishoff who designed a number of very popular Israel stamps in the 60's and 70's. So more questions than answers on this one. Please enlighten me/us !! Londonbus1

I am stumped. I would call it a cachet as it is an FDC so the cachet-maker [probably students at Miqwa Yisrael] must have had first hand knowledge but why the back hand cancellations from Tel Aviv-Yafo?. Still more questions than answers. Was this some type of FDC presentation gift? I acquired this cover many years ago when i was researching Post office Openings in the Young State Of Israel and it has been one of fascination to me since.

I am guessing that perhaps there was a pre-issue notice or poster produced by the Israeli Post Office and someone had the good sense to cut out the image and make a cachet out of it. As for the address, it is possible there was an erased pencil address or address label removed. It certainly appears to have gone through the mails.

I always wondered why they issued these early FDC's with tabless stamps... they would have been worth a fortune now

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Here’s one of the most treasured items found in my recently rediscovered old FDC collection. It’s a first day cover for three stamps issued by Israel in 1965 showing the ruins at Masada, prepared by a family member and sent through the mail to my grandfather in the U.S. According to my Internet research, these stamps are Scott 272-274, and it looks like the cachet itself was produced by Israel’s postal service. The stamps are lovely, and the cover holds a lot of emotional resonance for me. I hope any Israel collectors reading this enjoy it too!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Israel doesn't issue Christmas stamps but they do offer one Postage label a year for the Christian population here and tourists. Here is an example from 1992 on a First Day Cover to which has been added a 'Via Bethlehem' sticker. The label is from a Klussendorf machine.

I thought it might be worth showing this if only to compare with similar items from your own country or others you have seen. This is from the Israel Philatelic Service to a customer, most likely a folder of all the new issues for the month/period from the look of the envelope size. It has a Tel Aviv-Yafo (Jaffa) PPI. I normally don't save these but if you look to the left side you will see what looks like a sticker both top and bottom. These are pre-cut lengths of tape especially inscribed 'Telafila '93' and wrapped around the envelope for security. 'Telefila '93' was the first Stamp Exhibition I attended after making the move to Israel. Sometimes we put the strangest keepsakes in our albums !!
