Well, On Monday I received my latest Ebay find. I have acquired the elusive "PODGE Y's" Ohio Tax Token. I know this isn't a stamp, but in the Ohio Tax Stamp Collectors book, the auctor, Monte Dean, listed the only 3 Ohio Tokens that had the word TAX on them, so I now have all 3. This is the token that author of the book couldn't even get a picture of, but just had a rubbing. Earlier this year, I was able to find an actual picture of the token on some website I found on accident. The actual token came up on Ebay about 2-3 weeks ago, and I bought it. Maybe paid more than I would have liked, but I have the only one I have ever seen for sale to date, so who cares. LOL. Here are pictures of the three token together.
I just decided to look in the book for more information to add to this posting. My token is a 5 cent token and the one in the book, along with the picture I found earlier this year are both 10 cent tokens. This means that there are actually 4 tokens now, and I have the only 5 cent one known. Wow, even I didn't know this until just now. I thought I had the one listed in the book. Oh well, now I have another token to find. lol.
The seller on Ebay included a note to me, that he was forwarded by another token collector. The note states that the the name on the token and restaurant came form the owners name. The owner was listed in the 1906 directory as Jos. Wyss, (Y's). It is also believed the Podge, pronounced Podgey, was his nickname. So, the restaurant name was actually a funny version of his own name apparently, Podge being his nickname and the Y's for a shortened version of his last name. It is funny how we come to obtain information some times.
Hope y'all had a Merry Christmas. Mike.

Mike, I love it! Congrats on such a great find, and for the "state" of your collection. You must have one of the best around these days. I am still amazed by the fact that I grew up in Ohio back in the 1960s and 1970s, and I never saw or heard of these stamps or tokens at all. Just shows how very rich and varied our hobby is, and how TSF and its members constantly contribute to that diversity, in the best of ways. Well done to you, Mike! -Chris

Here is a significantly miscut 2 cent Reserve Litho consumer receipt that was sent to me by @bcoldren -- it is identified as RE-2c-7A (E) in the Dean system.

Wow, I haven't seen one cut in half yet. Great stamp Steve. The question is, was this stamp issued and subsequently used or was it fabricated from a multiple that was sold off after the State discontinued the system? We'll likely never know the answer...

Hey Steve, But, I think this was issued. First, you only have half of it, which means someone tore it apart. Second, look a the serial number, it is way off from where it should be. I think that page didn't get all the way in the printer from the second color and cutting. Just my opinion. Thanks, Mike.

Well, had another good week on Ebay. Bought this sheet with a lot of good stamps, and I even needed a few. But, the weird one, is the stamp with no imprint on either side. Haven't seen one of these, and I sure didn't have one, until now. The blank stamp also shows the actual color difference of the two side of an Ohio Sales Tax Stamp. This might explain the slight color differences on some stamps, depending on the side of the sheet they print on.

Well, I got in a few OSTS from a lady on ETSY, and low and behold, they had the edges glued together. The glued edge OSTS are very rare and hard to find. I have acquired 2 others over the years, but these I didn't know were glued when I bought them. I received three 9 cent stamps that were edge glued and three 12 cent stamps that were glued. I emailed her to ask if she had more, and she did. I arranged to buy the rest and told her to not pull them apart. here is what I received:
Then, while carefully checking the numbers and such, I found that one of the 9 cent stamps is cut off center considerably. Of course, I can't take that one out of the booklet and put in my book, because the glued booklets are rarer than the ones cut off center. I did carefully take a picture though:
It always pays to ask for more stamps! LOL

Today was a good day for me. I received a RE-15.00-3 Ohio Tax Stamp in the mail. This is one that I have been missing and trying to find for awhile now. Didn't get it cheap, but I am down to needing the ones you can't find these days. Mike.

Well, I have gotten lucky once again. I found a picture frame that had Ohio Tax Stamps all mounted together on Ebay. Unfortunately, when I received it, they are were glued to the paper, but luckily soaked right off in about 30 seconds. I bought it because I noticed several rare stamps and stamps with VOID written in red ink.

I recently had the good fortune to add another State Punch Card to my collection, an SPC5 that was not listed in Dean's catalog. The SPC5 was the only state punch card printed by the American Bank Note Company and, per Dean, "as a type, it is the most difficult of all of the SPCs to locate." At the time Dean wrote his book, only 9 merchants had been recorded having used this type of card in their businesses and all were large, low cost, chain store retailers. mikeclevenger has two of the nine in his extensive punch card collection, S. S. Kresge Co and Scott Store, that can be viewed here. My card was used by the S. H. Kress Company in Youngstown, Ohio. Like the 9 previously recorded, Kress was also a large retailer. The Dean catalog number for this card is SPC5-SHK1.

Congrat's on the great find Steve, I am still looking for that one. Those are really hard to come by. But, I actually have 5 now. I have two red stamp Kresge's, one black stamp Kresge, One Scott Store, and a F.W. Woolworth. I am up to 51 total cards now I think. I just wish I knew where to get more. LOL.Here is my page of SPC5's:

Very nice, Mike! I'd like to find an SPC5 with the AA control letter. An antiquing road trip through Ohio might bear fruit -- maybe I'll pause a day on my next trip to Chicagoland.

That would be nice. I am hoping to make it to Ohio later this year myself, and would love to find an AA card myself someday. Good luck.

I've had these curiosities tucked away for literally decades. I didn't know much about them, but this thread has been very educational! I wonder what the relative scarcity is for pairs and multiples. And any thoughts on what they might go for on eBay? These are the slightly more common strips and pairs. They will still sell on Ebay, but your not getting rich from them. I would think that the pairs would be less than $5 each and the strip just slightly more. I just sold 5 of the rarer pairs and only got about $20 each for them. They aren't high dollar stamps, but they are still hard to find to me.

Well, I got lucky this week. I bought a rather large lot of Ohio Sales Tax Stamps and got a few rarities that I didn't know were there. First off I got 2 wrappers with 100 on them. These are the correct size for a pack of 100 complete stamps. there weren't 100 stamps still in them, but just the same, the wrapper is what I like anyway.
The second rarity is that about 13 of the 12 cent stamp have double impressions. And I don't mean the kind of double impression that you need a magnifying glass for either. I was actually looking at the first one of these, and took my glasses off, cleaned them, and still thought my eyes were fuzzy. I wasn't thinking the stamps had a double impressions at first. LOL. When I did finally realize what I was looking at, I couldn't believe that there were 13 of them. There are a few more that are hard to tell, but I didn't count them.
(Note to Steve: I have put one in your envelope.)
This made my week.
Have a great day. Mike.

I know of 3 members here that collect them. I only seek the separated halves (i.e., vendor's stub and consumes'r receipt) if I don't have the joined pair.

mikeclevenger , your ability to find these interesting lots never ceases to amaze me! These two lots were on EBAY. I didn't say they were cheap, but I got them for a really good deal considering the qty of stamps. I also bought 2 lots from a face book page, and another dealer has some, but he can't find them. The pics he has is of some really good stamps though,. I am waiting on those still.

So, Looking through the box of Ohio Tax stamps, I discovered the stamp number doesn't match the box. The box has NNNM and the stamps are actually NNVM. Just another mistake by the manufacture. Gotta love it.
Then I am looking through another lot of 4 books of 100, 1 cent stamps. Every fourth stamp is numbered ^^^E5981, through all 4 books. You would think they would at least use a different number.

Well, I have attained the "Holy Grail" of the Ohio Sales Tax tokens. I know this isn't actually stamps, but in the book, these were listed just because, they are the only tokens form Ohio, that actually have the word "TAX" on them. If you have read the earlier entries, I had bought a Podge Y's token, thinking it was the normal 10 cent version, when it was an unlisted "5 cent" version. I have finally obtained the 10 cent Podge Y's, token! This gives me all 4 of the Ohio Tax Tokens. This has been my personal quest for about 5-6 years now, and I am glad it is over. Here is the complete collection, with 2 specimens of the rare 5 cent Podge Y's token shown.
What amazes me is that if you look at the bottom left and bottom right tokens, these were in the same collection at some point, as the writing on them, is the same. I did buy these from two different people.
