The idea of an airmail stamp had been discussed countless time by the British Post Office and many design ideas were put forward. It was not until March 27th, 2003 that Great Britain were to see it's first airmail stamp. Based on the Machin design. Designed by Sedley Place. Walsall Security Printers in Photogravure. Issued in Booklets of 4 together with air mail etiquettes and also in Presentation packs [Booklet stamps] Self-Adhesive, Die-Cut 15x14 For the Machin enthusiast, this was a winner but for the Philatelic Die-hards, this was an opportunity missed. Over many years, some beautiful designs had been put forward and to see the first airmail issue to turn out like an 'everyday' definitive was a big disappointment. The issue was slated by many in the National and Philatelic Press while others hailed it as a triumph ! Make your own mind up. On the same day, a Worldwide airmail stamp with queen in Rosine was issued. On April 1st 2004, a Worldwide Postcard stamp with the Queens Head in Grey-Black was issued. All were issued in Booklets and Presentation packs. The Postcard stamp in the pack had white backing paper and were NOT the Booklet issue. [Another RM con !!] Londonbus1

For the classic era airmail stamp collector, Britain is easy. It didn't issue any! However, there were some semi-official airmails issued. Here are a few: Sanabria S1. Used Feb. 11-18, 1913. Robert Sinclair Tobacco Co. Sanabria S5. Used Nov. 25-26, 1933. Provincial Airways Ltd. Sanabria S6. Feb. 3, 1934. Portsmouth-Southsea & Isle of Wight Aviation Ltd.
