US Animals on stamps Lisa's Collection I didn't see a thread with just animals on stamps, so I started this one. Please let me know if I missed a more appropriate thread. I'm really an mnh collector - something about the newness of the stamps attracts me, I guess. These were in a box lot and they are pretty cool, I just don't love the cancels...

I would bet a full set of these stamps is something much more commonly seen mint rather than used - accumulating all 50 different stamps is tough to do. There's a real good start, 48 of them. And one with the purple ink cancellation you sometimes see!

Hi Jen, you may wish to search, either in the "search" box at "Home" (and select the "display as threads" box) or the Google box at the bottom of the page here. If you start one: Please consider Thematic : Rodents on stamps. (from rodere..."to gnaw")

That USA 22 cent Whistlepig is a favorite. Wonder if anyone has done a topical collection of rodents on stamps? You'll need a copy of Canada #1, the Three Penny Beaver! Way back in the rec.collecting.stamps.discuss days, I recall somebody with a collection of mustelid stamps (mustelids = otters, weasels, skunks, etc.). I don't remember anybody claiming to be a rodent stamp collector, but I'm sure there is somebody out there somewhere. The American Topical Association's checklist shows 658 different stamps available on the subject. Ryan

Does the existence of a American Topical Association checklist mean that there are collectors for that topic? Or do they make checklists for every possible topic that could appear on a stamp?

The topics listed by the ATA don't seem to have too narrow a focus, although you do see some occasional listings for topics with very few matches (John Cabot, only 7 stamps! doesn't seem right, must be more than that ..). Then again, you could broaden your topic a bit and choose "Explorers", there are almost 1500 stamps on that list. Or you could buy the list for "Art" stamps, and it has over 11,000 matches. I'm sure it's just like the inventory in a book store, you'll have some books that sell like hotcakes and others have a single copy that sits on the shelf for 5 years. Same thing with their topical lists, some will be their best sellers and some will be something they need to knock the dust off before they send it away.
I would bet the rodent list is worth their while, though - there must be plenty of people with pet mice who would collect stamps with mice on them. Certainly I'd expect it to be a bigger hit than the list of weasel stamps!
679 stamps for my Dürer topical collection, hmm, that's a lot to gather up.

Back in the day when I was collecting Jersey, they came out with yet another stellar series from the premier artist - Jennifer Toombs: RIP, she recently passed away. She designed a number of Jersey stamps, and this bird set was one of my favourites. Courvoisier was my favourite printer as well! I ended up buying the full sheets of this set. I no longer have the singles, but the sheets I bought are still in the stock book since the day I first received them. Just gorgeous stamps!

another Lynx- while not considered a domestic cat, there are instances where people have taken in a "kitten" and semi-domesticated. There is a couple not far from here that was recently on the news...gets along fine with them, expensive to feed and a bit unruly around small pets.... I own a Highlands Long Hair Manx, a smaller cousin to the Lynx.... behaves much more like a dog- death to small rodents and birds, and all the dogs in a the neighborhood are either really friendly to her or they give her a wide berth! This from 1972, and sadly too nice a cancelalation and gummed, so likely a CTO, which Romania seems to have a great many

Here are two combo covers that I made for this year’s U.S. Endangered Species stamps, using Artmaster FDCs for the previous line of Endangered Species stamps issued in 1996. There were several species that appear in both sets; these are the piping plovers (Scott 3105n/5799r) and San Francisco garter snakes (Scott 3105k/5799n). I’m not sure whether to be sorry that they’re still endangered, or glad that they haven’t vanished in the last 27 years!

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

This is another set that was in a recent lot. It is the 1969 swamp fauna set from Cuba. Sadly they carry CTO cancels. Once again it was frustrating to find that eBay did not allow me to list these as Cuban stamps even though I am using eBay.ca. The go around was to list them as topicals.
