I do love it when I can get a cover with the contents. This mourning cover I picked up this past weekend has a long letter, that is quite interesting, so I hope you'll bear with me as I post it all. I was sent by a woman and her husband (he writes the last page) who had lost their daughter in a typhoid outbreak the previous year. The husband, Abram Pike, was I believe a minister at the local Wesleyan Methodest church, and obviously their faith has carried them through this terrible time. The letter was postmarked April 13, 1907 in Markham Ontario, a town just north east of Toronto. The writers actually address the letter from Cashel, which was a hamlet in Markham. A cross roads really, and actually one I drive through when I do drive into work. Interestingly, I have another cover addressed to the same woman in St. Mary's Ontario in my War Tax collection. No letter in that one unfortunately. While it does seem invasive at times reading other peoples mail, it is an amazing look into the past. Here's the cover, front and back. With your permission, and patience, I'll post the letter. I trust you'll find it interesting. Or not.
