It's the 19th of July, 1966 and Helen Nelson is miffed. And I would be too if I were Mrs Nelson, California's watchdog of business ethics, because the bakers of that great state have increased the price per loaf by two, and in some cases even three, cents per loaf. San Francisco Examiner, 19 July 1966The other day I paid over four bucks for a loaf. Alas, where is Mrs Nelson when the world needs her more than ever? Also someone mailed a letter in Sacramento that day, and part of it ended up with me. Perhaps he was reflecting on the injustice of bread prices as he popped it into the letter box. kr

20 July 1945 Canal Zone, Scott#C9, wartime censored airmail postmarked Ancon, C.Z. The Canal Zone was quite active during the war. It was considered a prime target for US enemies, and protected accordingly. Canal control buildings were repainted in camouflage, and substantial defenses installed. Of considerable worry was an attack on Gatun Dam. If that had happened, and the crucial Gatun Lake had drained, it would have put the canal out of commission for at least 2 to 3 years because of the time needed for the lake to refill. My granddad was a canal employee at the locks on the Pacific side. He had served in the submarine service during the 1920's. I was told he tried to re-join when the US entered the war, but they denied him because canal employment was considered an essential position.

Ha ha! posted on my birthday 30 July , but by 1963 I was at University . It has been many years since we had Sunday Mail deliveries . The main reason for this special service was to make sure a card or letter arrived on a Birthday or an Anniversary, hence the extra 55 ore charge

August 12Admiral Miklós Horthy was a Hungarian naval officer and conservative leader who defeated revolutionary forces in Hungary post-WWI and remained Hungary's head of state until 1944. He is featured on this 1 pengo, dark green & buff, perf. 12 stamp (Scott 570; 18Jun1941) postmarked on this date.

Horthy commemoration leads to the thin end of a skinny branch. In this stamp he elevates himself to equal other European dictators, something his reputation never could shake. More recently he was praised by Prime Minister Orban as a patriot. On the other hand, if Horthy wasn't prosecuted at Nürnberg, the oversight was mostly in deference to Hungary's precarious place in the post-war balance. My preference is to mention with warning lights flashing and leave him in the 'Do not disturb' album.
