Officially Swedish Midsummer won't be on the calendar day this year--that's tomorrow--but on Saturday, as usual. Why they always do that beats me.

Welcome to 23 June, midsummer eve in the northern hemisphere. Unfortunately I don't have a stamp with a postmark fro 23 June and a motive from midsummer (midsummer bonfire) so I have to do with this stamp. Austria, 1962. Postmark: Wien 23.6.64 Motive: Schloss Porcia, the court yard. Read more about the Porcia Castle  But If I go back to the midsummer bonfire, There is at last a Norwegian stamp with a midsummer bonfire as motive. Actually it's a famous Norwegian painter's motive. Lidingö, Sweden (A Municipality that is part of metropolitan Stockholm) Okay okay, Chris Beryllium Guy , get well. And here's evidence I can take a hint. Another for the calendar. Critical details: cancelled at Lidingö's centrum post office on 25.6.39(?). The stamp shows a packet steamer from Olle Hjorzberg's massive 1936 Postverket tercentenary historical series.
As for Lidingö, that's where I'm at this summer; a large-ish island connected by a 1-km bridge to Stockholm. Below is our backyard. That's reason enough, no?
(I just saw Alex's vikingeck quip about living on a small island. Um, if Britain is small, this island is... what?)
