A postcard from the Mayflower Hotel, Los Angeles from 14 March, 1957. us-los.angeles-1957.03.14 by Mick Taylor, on Flickr LOS ANGELES / MAR 14 / ? PM / 10 / CALIF. Postcard is in Danish, I think. The Pacific Coast Architectural Database notes that, "Danish-born artist Einar Petersen (1885-1986) painted a notable mural of Pilgrims for the hotel." Maybe that's why Anne stayed there.

Kupperzell, Germany, 65 years ago today. It's in the state of Württemberg and isn't far from the Bavarian border. Wikipedia just told me: "On January 1, 1972, Kupferzell fused with Eschental, Feßbach, Mangoldsall, Goggenbach and Westernach to the town of Kupferzell." If those names look a little unusual, it's probably because eastern Württemberg and western Bavaria are home to the Schwabisch (Swabian) language (or dialect, or (probably the best) lect), which is only partially interchangeable with "standard" German. The Schwabish word for headache is "Schäädelwaih", with twin ümlauts rockin' out in the middle there. The German word is "Kopfschmerz", which I also like quite a lot. On a more philatelic note, the 1950s were a golden age for German place-name postmarks. The impressions were consistently good and the consolidation of post offices was still a ways off in the future. Someday I might see, or even have, a postmark from Feßbach or Goggenbach.

16 March 1970 Not the wording you might see on a slogan cancel in these more enlightened times, but this March 16 example was used in New South Wales, Australia, from 1967-1973 and again in 1976, for about one week in each of those years. In Occleshaw's catalogue, the Campsie PO is not one of those listed as using this slogan, so a new example to add to the list.

Lovely little Swedish swallow stamp, so simple, with a Lidingö rubber cancel, usually used on soft or lumpy parcels. High value stamp, so that figures.

16 March 1934 As one might expect from the philatelist Leonard Athol Wyndham (1899-1947), this registered cover from the 1934 Royal Tour of Southern Africa comes complete with its original certificate of posting. Having spent a couple of days in Pretoria, on March 16 the Royal party reboarded The White Train (as it was called due to the ivory-painted air-conditioned saloons) for Pochefstroom, and an overnight trip to Riverton and Kimberley, where it was due at 10 am on March 17th.

18 March 1982 March 18, 1982, cover to my grandfather (name and address removed in this image) from stamp dealer Wim Smits of London Court, Perth, Western Australia. A solo 1978 30c Pied Oystercatcher (withdrawn from sale 29 Jan 1982) is tied with St. Georges Terrace cds. This was also the year that Wim retired handing the reigns to his son, Mickel. I remember this store well, and visited it often as a child.

The calendar says this is the twentieth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Are there any commemoratives for that one?
Rather than linger on that, allow me a 112 years old anniversary of something rather less striking. Here is a nifty Gysinge, my favorite tiny village, on a bright orange Oscar II. Twenty-five öre, when the normal letter rate was ten; probably off a registered letter.

I loved going to stamp shops when I was a kid, too, and this one looks nicely organized as well as packed with treasures! Just in case you haven't found it yet, there is a thread called Visit to a Stamp Store here: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/4758/visit-stamp-storeYou are welcome to make posts about visits from former times, too. The thread is not reserved just for current shops, which unfortunately, are becoming fewer and farther between. Anyway, would love to hear more about this great WA shop in that thread. Thanks again for a great post, Peter!

19 March 1938 This March 19, 1938, cover is addressed to Ernest John McMahon, the Commissioner of Taxation in New South Wales, and is franked with a 2d KGVI red paying the standard domestic letter rate. While at Kurri Kurri PO, something caused the postmaster to write "Supposed to contain / valuable enclosure / Officially registered" at the top of the envelope and apply a local registration label. The "valuable enclosure" was presumably cash, which, according to PO regulations, had to be sent via registered mail. In 1938, the registration fee was 3d, so, with the standard penalty applied at double deficiency, the package was taxed 6d; "T6".

Baarn, Netheerlands, 69 years ago today. It's in Utrecht Province, north of Utrecht itself and just southeast of Hilversum. (Back in my shortwave days, I listened to Radio Nederland via transmitters from Hilversum. Radio Nederland was very personable in style and a big favorite amongst those who liked to listen to programmes from here and there, not only turn the dial to try to pick up obscure or out-of-the-way local stations.) Baarn itself seems pretty quiet; it is popular with hikers more than with urban sightseers. It has been a chartered city since 1391. (Or so it says here; I wasn't at the ceremony.) The royal family has several properties in the vicinity, and Queen Beatrix - most of you remember her from several definitive series - was born there.

20 March 1934 This March 20, 1934 cover was addressed to H.C. van Diggelen Esq., Prime Minister's Office, Capetown, and is franked (L to R) by Bechuanaland Protectorate 1932 KGV 1d, ½d, 2d values from the "Baobab and Cattle" definitive issue, tied by three fine strikes of the armorial "ROYAL TOUR" oval date stamps. On the rear flap, is the South African coat of arms embossed in black, and inside the cover, on matching official Royal Train stationary (letter head illustrated below), is a letter in Afrikaans, bearing the same date as postage and written at Gaberones, Bechuanaland. The previous night, the Royal party had been in Mafeking, the final stop in South Africa, and March 20 was the last day the South African authorities were officially in charge, before the train crossed into Rhodesia the following day, and operations were taken over by the Rhodesia Railways and Post Office.
