Great Britain, October 13th, 1852. An entire from London to Edinburgh. Cancelled with a London 6.
The left hand 4 margin stamp with check letters BH is from plate 149. The right hand 4 margin stamp with check letters RL is from plate 147.
Plates 132 – 177 were the first to show Alphabet II check letters. The plates were registered between 6 February 1852 and 20 July of 1853. Plates from this group were still in use when official perforating began on January 27, 1854 and plates 155, 157 and 162-177 are known both perforated and imperforate.
The reverse has a wonderful cross shaped postmark from the Lombard Street Post Office date stamped October 13th 1852 and a red circular date stamp from Edinburgh where it was received on October 14th 1852 (a one day turnaround!).
All-in-all a somewhat rare cover. The content shows a beautifully written table of prices for Hemp, Flax and Tallow from the Russian Broker Benjamin Woolner of Colchesters & Woolner, 16 St. Helen's place, London. Hemp experienced increased growth at this time in history as a textile fiber, where it was made into products including rope, sailcloth, clothing, paper and linens.
I’m amazed at the consistent quality of penmanship throughout the letter and ruled table, it must have taken quite some time to compile such a list?
This piece is from my growing collection of imperforate penny reds with check letters RL. Rob

October 14, 1916 ... and, a German feldpost cancel was applied to this picture postcard with a message written two days earlier. It was being sent to Fräulein Thora Petersen at Tornberg near Norburg [Nordborg], Sonderburg [Sønderborg] in Schleswig-Holstein. This area had been German occupied territory since the Dano-Prussian War (Second Schleswig War) in 1864. The northern part of Schleswig would be returned to Denmark following a plebiscite held in 1920 after WW1. (75% voted for reunification with Denmark). The solider who sent the card was a member of the 201st Infantry Division of the Imperial German Army, 1st Battalion, 401st Regiment. These units were created in July 1916. The 401st Regiment was made of a mixed of veteran and fresh troops. About half were veterans and convalescents from depots of the 5th, 17th and 20th Korps. The other half were young men from school (Class of 1917). The Division took up a position on the Eastern Front north of Baranovichi. At the time this card was written, the regiment had yet to be in battle. Their first engagement took place in November. [Source: US Army: Histories of 251 Divisions of the German Army (1914-1918). Compiled from the Intelligence Section of the General Staff AEF, GHQ Chaumont France, 1919 - Published by Government Printing Office, 1920] Cancels: Feldpost: Outer Ring - K.D.Feldpostexped. / 201.Infanterie.Div.Inner - a / 14.10.16. 3-4 N / derRegimental Postmark: Outer Ring - * 1 Bataillon * / Infanterie - Regiment 401Inner = Brief- / StempelOn the front is a picture of two children, the boy in uniform, having Der erste Kuß [The First Kiss]. The solider has written his name and Thora's name on the cheeks of the children. Postcard:Published by Wilhelm S. Schröder Nacif. of Berlin. His company was active between 1908 and 1918. WSSB card number 1061The theme, with children, of 'The First Kiss' was a common one on postcards of this period. The card appears to have been printed on February 1, 1916.

Great Britain, SG number: 201. Registered envelope canceled at the East Central London Chief Office on October 14th, 1889. Received in Crefeld, Holland on October 15th, 1889 (seems faster than anything shipping today!!!). Krefeld (also spelled Crefeld until 1925) is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located northwest of Düsseldorf, its center lying just a few kilometers to the west of the river Rhine; the borough of Uerdingen is situated directly on the Rhine. Because of its economic past, Krefeld is often referred to as the "Velvet and Silk City". Rob
