1 November 1946 First Day Cover, postmarked Road..(?) on the island of Tortola WI (I presume WI = "West Indies;" Tortola is in the British Virgin Islands), but apparently never sent anywhere by Post. This Virgin Islands issue of two denominations of a "Common Design" (Scott CD303; Sc. #88 1 1/2p red brown and Sc. #89 3p orange) celebrated Peace, one year after the end of World War II. The design depicts King George VI and the Parliament Buildings in London. The envelope has a crease that suggests it travelled inside another envelope to reach my dad and enter his collection. A complementary gift from Mr. O'Neal perhaps.

November 3, 1947 ... and in occupied Germany a CDS was applied in Rissen in the west end of Hamburg to this cover going to Toronto, Canada. The cover was opened and examined before it left Germany and resealed by British examiner 7992. There is a purple, British Crown circular censor mark and a 50Pf occupation stamp. Two blank round seals have been used to cover up a red sticker on the lower. Presumably some sort of information or instruction that no longer applies (airmail?). The envelop contained what appears to be a contemporary, folded pieced of paper with the logo of the Canadian Grain Products Company (sellers of Grain, Flour and Feed). There was no message. I'll go out on a limb and opine that it may have been used to contain a cheque or draft - much the same as people do today when they send money. But, who knows. In a total coincidence, I just noticed that this cover was mailed to 185 Glenmount Park Road in the East end of Toronto. A couple of blocks from where I grew up. As a kid, I walked by it everyday. Small world. Stamp: German Occupation Stamp: 1st Control Commission Issue Issued on February 11, 1946 50Pf, Blackish grey-green Mi.Nr. 932

November 5, [1847] ... And a nice large postmark, in red ink, was added in Brattleboro, Vermont to a cover and letter going to New York City. The postage was also hand-stamped in red -- five cents. The year is not shown on the cancel but we can read it from the dateline on the letter which was written the day before it was mailed.
