Yes, a square stamp, but intended to be mounted / viewed on a point. As a shape, I am going to settle for diamond.

Postal stationery envelope from СТАЛИНГРАД п.т.к. (Stalingrad) to Leningrad, 15/9/1928. The 8k indicium is supplemented by 8k+4k “Large Heads” for the correct 20k rate. The non-standard (provisional) registration label is perfed on 3 sides, with pre-printed city name and registration number.
In the period 1922 to 1932 (or possibly also a few years later) many post offices across the Soviet Union used various “utilitarian” registration labels, mainly on domestic mail. These labels exhibit a wide variety of styles and lettering. Their main characteristic is that they lack the proper indication of the intended purpose, i.e the Russian equivalent for "R" (the letter "З" = "Z" for "zakaznoe"). It is unclear whether their use was a temporary official measure in anticipation of a more permanent solution to the issue of domestic registration or an official directive applied with variations locally. In some cases (for example, the use of green C.O.D or of blue Insured labels, even earlier than 1922, for example in 1917, 1920 or 1921), it is clear that it was a local emergency measure due to absence of regular labels. Occasionally we can observe use of these labels on international mail as well.

September 16th, 1906 1 ruble stamp cancelled at station Vysoko-Litovsk (ВЫСОКО-ЛИТОСКЬ), then in Grodno province, today in Brest oblast, Belarus.
Below is a photo of the station as it stands today:
What a beautifully presented and clean railway station, a credit to the people. We have, locally, a town Rubbish pickup next Saturday Morning. Some of our residents, or visitors, seem to think it de-rigeur , to eject fast food boxes, alcohol bottles, tyres, batteries, nappies from their vehicles as they leave / enter town. As a cyclist, it's hard to ignore.

A 3c dull red, type III, perf. 15.5 Washington (Scott 26) on a cover sent from Duquoin, Illinois circa 1857-61. In 1968 the United Nations issued two stamps to publicize World Weather Watch, a new weather system directed by the World Meteorological Organization. The 6c green, black, ocher, red & blue stamp is Scott 188 and the 20c lilac, black, ocher, red & blue stamp is Scott 189. Both are perf. 13x13.5. This 4c red violet Lincoln postal card precanceled with 3 printed red violet lines (Scott UX48; Nov. 19, 1962) and a 1c green Jefferson from the Prominent Americans issue (Scott 1278; Jan. 12, 1968) was sent to my Grandfather from Bradenton, Florida in 1969. The postage rate for postcards was increased to 5c on January 7, 1968.

Cover from ЧЕРНИГОВКА п.т.о. (Chernigovka, Ukraine, bilingual Russian/Ukrainian cancellation) to ..... (25/9, partial and indistinct arrival cds on back). Franked at 20k for domestic registered letter rate. The non-standard registration label is perfed on 3 sides, with a mis-alligned pre-printed registration number changed by hand. It is highly possible that the cover is addressed to Sofia, Bulgaria, in which case it is underfranked by 8k, nut no due was raised.

A card to Grandad! Fabulous. The 1c Jefferson looks odd, I presume from a booklet pane.
