A St. Thomas bisect from this day 121 years ago.
Cute as can be, but maybe a little too perfect. Definitely not rare, judging from how much I paid Jay Smith for it. Anybody know the story behind these? Are they mostly philatelic? Or am I being paranoid?
Cold-windy weekend. While the rest of the American Atlantic coast got generous snow, we're just barely squeaky south enough to get nothing but the cold. Where is my snow? Bah, humbug. Then there's Rod's 43C corner of the planet. Which planet?

Or am I being paranoid? Nice example Aaron, Some reading: linkJay Smith Because of the exciting nature of the bisects, they were also used on "cacheted" souvenir covers which are avidly sought after. I really love motel postcards of the 50s to 70s. Here's one from Valdosta, Georgia, postmarked 21 January 1970. I'm going to guess, based on the message and the visible L in the postmark, that it was actually postmarked in Sarasota, Florida. Perhaps a card that the sender had left over from a Georgia vacation. us-1970.01.21-briarwood.motel.valdosta.ga by Mick Taylor, on Flickr Sol "Salty" Fleischman was a sports reporter, initially on radio and then on TV for Channel 13 in Tampa. From an obituary in The Tampa Tribune for 21 April 2000: "His signature TV pieces were entitled "Where Am I?" They were weekly tapes of his favorite fishing spots throughout Florida. Viewers who identified the spots were rewarded with fishing gear."

Just the distraction I appreciate most in the middle of a thick day. Avoiding work. Switching first to a League of Nations cancelled in Geneva today 83 years ago, Poste restante, general delivery. The stamp features the newly completed Palace of Nations in Geneva. Not much to commemorate. In 1941 the League was politically dead. They only had humanitarian work, but that was plentiful that year.
Also a Lidingö cancelled Sweden F244 from 89 years ago, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Swedish parliament.
Neither are very compelling. I wouldn't want to work at either, not even take the public tour. Maybe it's just hard to make a boxy building look appealing on stamp.
