Here is an old Forgery of the 1859 5c Beaver stamp from Canada. I was told this could be an Oneglia Forgery. I have a couple of these old ones in different stamps.

Here are a couple more from Early Canada. I don't really have any idea on where these two came from as there was no mention of an Engraver in the collections I plucked them from.

From Posts by JimJung An Oneglia - rare as an imperf (15a forgery?) Considered to be an Oneglia. Left, probably an Oneglia from 1900-1910 but also possibly made and sold by Panelli in the 1920's, somewhat rare and nice to have. A decent effort when compared to the genuine on the right. The key features are the size of the "cy", crude maple leaves (no maples in Genoa?) and small beaver The line between Oneglia & Panelli is hazy as they worked closely together.

I took an opportunity to see Ken Pugh speaking at a Club Meeting. He is an authority on forgeries of certain countries. He had volumes of books on forgeries and I took these pictures from his books. Looks like he agrees with my earlier assessment Ken Pugh is very knowledgeable particularly in BNA matters and approachable. My only thought is the quality difference between the 2 Cartier Oneglias as he was quite proficient with his forgeries. Surprising he just didn't modify the earlier 10p into the 17c. Maybe the 17c came first??

A stamp with a lot of controversy So, here's one certified by the Canadian Greene Foundation on the left Overprints are not my area of knowledge so this is an "opinion" 1. The "2" is squared off in the lower part instead of rounded. It is also thinner 2. The middle stroke of the "E" is inclined. In the genuine, the top of the "E" has a slight curve 3. The tops of the "N" are not level 4. The top of the "S" is much smaller. The bottom is too high My fee is en route

Falschung I concur with most of that. The argument I present on the other hand is the natural human element of greed. If someone went through all the trouble to fake the overprint would not more surface? This is the only one I've ever seen in over fifty years.A lot of bother to make one stamp is my thought. No matter it will become more talking points on my demise.Jack are you taking notes?

They may be more modern in nature This set was recently sold by a prominent auction house CV$2600 - they however stated their nature as genuines was in dispute - still sold for $300 I will inquire from an authority on these

A stamp with a lot of controversy So, here's one certified by the Canadian Greene Foundation on the left Although you have this certified by VGG, there are some Canadian collectors who believe this stamp is not legit and that no copies exist that are genuine.

Got an answer from Ken Pugh on the 2c invert
"Just got home from out of province so sorry for the late reply. These are fakes and the "reputable" auctions should know better. All the inverts I have ever seen are fakes, although the V Greene may have one item they suspect is genuine. I am not convinced as yet. Many forgers are involved incl F.E. Eaton, Harris MacMaster, Adtinvest, Fournier etc. The list goes on. I have recorded the Eaton Fakes in my upcoming reference on his fakes."

I am not an expert by means. My first glance tells me to question this one. Colours look wrong to me.

a more modern attempt at forgery Thanks for making this latest post, Frog. Are you able to show how you know that these examples are forgeries rather than genuine? I noted from looking in the Scott Catalogue that the imperforate varieties of these King Edward VII definitives are known and quite valuable. This 7-cent olive bister is listed as #92a. The 2017 Classic Specialized Catalogue also notes color varieties of greenish bister (#92b), yellow olive (#92c), and straw (#92d). Like David ( dgdecker), I am also no expert in this area, but the color looks all right to me, just a bit brighter than most of my perforate examples (which came from you, by the way). In fact, to my untrained eye, the images look pretty good, too. And of course, Scott makes no mention of forgeries, and I could not find anything in my Linn's Focus on Forgeries book or in the 2014 Unitrade Catalogue, either. So, any comments about how you can spot the forgeries would be welcome.

HINT: first, check Unitrade to see how many stamps were in a sheet of imperforates Above is Frog's block , the actual margins are lost on the white page

HINT: check Unitrade to see how many stamps were in a sheet of imperforates Thanks for the quick response, Falschung. For #92a, the 2014 Unitrade indicates "imperf. pair without gum (400 stamps)". So does this mean that these stamps are only found in pairs? I thought that the listing by pairs was only for valuation purposes, so if that it is the case, then it is purely my misunderstanding.

BG I actually purchased them listed as fakes. In person the paper is quite evident a modern paper not at all aged I suspect digital reproduction. As with any collection it is all personal what you add.Years from now let someone else scratch their heads.

BG a sheet of 400 would be four ten by ten hundred stamp panes all on one sheet with cutting margins between each hundred stamp pane.hence while one margin could be slightly larger the other side of a horizontal strip could only be the space between two stamps.

Thanks, Frog. I must have misinterpreted your scan. It looked to me like the block was cut fairly closely (well within the margin for one stamp) on the top, bottom, and right sides of the scan. So, I thought it was supposed to be a margin block with the selvedge on the left side of the block. If all of that white space on the right side is part of the block, then that is where I went wrong. It appeared to me that the block was cut close on the right, but just sitting on top of a sheet of white paper. Maybe my eyes are going.... In that case, your and @falshung's explanations make perfect sense. Thanks!

BG - good you got it - this is what one of the 100 blocks looks like (4 in a full sheet) Frog's sample is a modern photographic digital reproduction and a very poor one It lacks engraving details and is quite rough. Letters like the E of POSTAGE are quite indistinct. It would however probably get some bids on a far east eBay site An actual block of 8 might fetch close to $1000 So when it seems too good to be true, it is generally not good enough to be true Sheets of 100 occasionally come up for sale but they don't get anywhere what the catalog says the one above sold for $1800

A very crude fake of a Canada #3 12d Queen Vic given to me years ago by a member of my former club. It's not fooling anyone.
