Given the time of year, I think it appropriate to think through resolutions related to philately and the Forum.
I hope to process (find, identify, catalog, scan and mount/store) the numerous stamp-filled folders and envelopes that are strewn about my study. I'd also like to reduce the size of my duplicate holdings through sale, trade or giveaway.
As it relates to our Forum, I'll work to encourage greater member participation in Forum discussions and article submissions for the Forum's superb newsletter.
What do each of you hope to accomplish, philatelically, in 2017?

I suppose my goals for the New Year start out in similar fashion to yours: I have envelopes full of acquisitions which I need to go through and sort, identify, and decide what to keep and what to move along. I need to get more of these stamps mounted in my albums so that I can more easily see what I have.
I have already resolved not to buy any more stamps for the first 6 months of the year to give me more time to work on the material that I already have. I would also really like to get involved with trading some of my duplicates to others for needs. I am hoping that TSF will help me to do that.
As it relates to TSF, I want to write an article for one of the newsletters this year. I will probably start with something simple like how I got started in collecting and how my collecting goals have evolved over the years to where they are now.

The resolution I am holding myself too is going to be create album pages that fit into a schaubek 6 ring binders using their blank pages. The reasons are many , but mainly to see if I can do it, and if possible to give my collection a clean professional look. |

My feeling as well. except the think the resolution will last. oh, about three days.  I have a large number of feeder albums and countries. I would like to begin filling my Minkus Global Supreme 1840-1967 pages, which means harvesting what I already have.  I have already combed through these feeder albums/pages for my primary collection: 1840-1940 on Steiner pages. But, I want to add stamps after 1940, as well as a secondary collection of stamps prior to 1940, to the new thick paper Minkus pages. And then I can begin to de-bulk the stamp room (spare bedroom), much to the approval of my long suffering spouse.  |

What I collect: (Mark) General worldwide collector (to 1975 or so) with a soft spot for Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia.

Hmmm.... I think the main thing for me is to keep collecting fun. If I had a couple of nice stamp sessions per week, one where I worked on my collection and one where I shared a story here, that would be a fun year. I tend to spend too much time looking for the perfect lot to bid on and then not having the $$ to bid. So I'm avoiding that side of things and focusing on sorting and cataloguing what I have. I counted 35 binders/albums/stock books on my shelf and only 10 make up my catalogued collection. The rest are in various states of fullness and need to be merged into the main collection. Ramble, ramble, ramble: 1. Continue sorting and cataloguing my WW collection. Goal is to get from 6000 in the inventory to 10 000 stamps. 2. Share one story per week on the forum, either through my own blog or directly here. (2a. Figure out what folks like here. I'm still experimenting, myself.) 3. Write one post per month for my local club website (which I will have launched by Jan 2017.) That's kind of it. While I frequent all the forums and have been members of some for a very long time, this is the one I check out first. I'd like to 'settle down' here a bit more next year. I guess I have similar goals as many others here...going through and sorting, mounting stamps in various envelopes, stock books, etc. into my main collection. I will probably still keep buying in the coming months online and go to a couple of shows in the Spring as I tend to take more of a break from collecting in the summer. I would like to someday do some philatelic writing. As a working scientist, I have written and published many scientific papers, book chapters, and even a book, but wouldn't know how to start with philatelic writing. As a WW collector, I don't feel like I'm an expert on any topic  Anyway, maybe one day... Happy Holidays to everyone! Chris |

Chris- Have you thought about a blog as a platform? The good news about a blog is the writing can be more informal, which means, perhaps a less OCD approach to the topic compared to a scientific journal. And, if one approaches the topics as a WW collector, one isn't expected to know everything. |

My feeling as well. except the think the resolution will last. oh, about three days. Thanks for your comments, Big Blue! Well, I say that I will not buy more stamps for the next 6 months, but that will be the most difficult resolution to keep. Buying stamps is one of the things I enjoy most about collecting.
Even if I can slow down on acquisition and spend more time working with what I have, it will be a clear step in the right direction. I also plan to use TSF to help me with my accountability on these resolutions, as I will report periodically on how I am doing.

I would suggest, the success of Jim's blog shows that there is a significant audience for the generalist approach to stamp collecting complementary to the expert approach. Actually, maybe WW collecting is a specialism in itself....

The biggest project is organizing my US mini-sheets in binders along with continuing on my general US collection (working the pre-1900 era_. I want to spend some time on my Straits Settlements/Singapore/Malaysia album (Steiner pages).

I would like to get my US collection all mounted in albums this winter. Then I can actually know what stamps I need instead of buying stamps that I already have and stuck them in a pile somewhere and forgot I already have them. I also need to stick with my original collecting interests or I will be a world wide collector before I know it. That is to a big a task for me. I would also like to offer some giveaways here. I would also like to write an article for the newsletter.

My resolutions for this year are:
Fill at least one more hole in my collection(the countdown is now at six)
Finish my excise tax collection ( some expensive)
Find at least one of the missing NFLD airmails absent
Start working seriously on the OA's (costly)
Stop worrying about trivial things and keep myself together (here too! )
oh yeah drop the other ten pounds I'm carrying AGAIN (I did get down to 201)
find a few more bargains for give aways.
work seriously on getting back to the hard body real me.

I'm back!
I sure have missed you guys. My wants for the new year is to maybe finish the Europa Album. I work on it for a little bit and then I blink and move on to something else. The Ducks are all caught up and safely in their album. Would like more for Christmas Island. Started that album about 4 months ago. Don't know why I got caught up in how wonderful the stamps looked and just decided one day, a new collection for me! yea...
And I do want to be more active here.

Hadn't really thought about resolutions, though philatelic resolutions seem more interesting to me :-)
Maybe I will try to fill in the gaps for pre-independence India, Machins and 1937 Coronation series. Maybe finally get myself an FDC album(sss) to organize my FDCs and covers that are all over the place.
Oh and I really should get my duplicates organized to give away and swap. Have been too lazy to do this so far.

As I mentioned in the Auction thread, I have "fallen off the wagon" already on my resolution to stop buying completely for 6 months, but I will excuse it by saying that my birthday is coming up and family will want to get me some stamp gifts anyway, so I will turn these purchases over to them for gifting back to me in April! I love having supportive family and friends!
I have also resolved to make my first attempt at writing for a philatelic publication, and I have decided that the TSF Newsletter will be the first. With encouragement from Steve (tomiseksj) and Michael (Londonbus1), I am planning to write up my own philatelic memory piece on how I got started collecting. The timing is good, as this year will mark the 50th anniversary of my start as a stamp collector.
So, some resolutions are still intact and progressing, and others are, well, ready to be revised.....

Well, at least I just made good on one of my philatelic resolutions for 2017. I just submitted an article for the next TSF Newsletter. Let's hope it gets accepted! It is my first attempt at any philatelic writing....

I made a resolution to try and actually put stamps into an album as soon as possible after I get them and I have made reasonable progress with that one. My second resolution was to REALLY make an effort at tidying my desk where I have all my stamps,albums,letters,catalogues etc but I'm sorry to say that is still an ongoing process.
Never mind, one day Rodney...
Oh I forgot, I did make a sort of resolution to finally work out how to put a picture in my posts, and I did! It's Trouper my whippet when he was a puppy...

Sad to say, as some of you know, Gerben (SWH) of Stamp World History passed away after a long fight with cancer on December 31, 2016, just seven days after penning the note on this thread. I just wish that when my time comes, it would be as 'unexpected'... Much better to die with your boots on, doing what you truly enjoy. -k- |

First one didn't happen many bids no success second one is still project in the working state Third one actually doubled Forth Haha MANY BIDS LITTLE WINNINGS Yep more relaxed did get down to 191 so not bad working on it Yep working on that too This year I resolve to move on at some point from large queens not quite ready yet though.I hope to get back at those other purchase items this year with more serious attitude.The budget looks a bit better at least for the first half of this year so maybe ?? |

Generally I do not make New Years resolutions. I try to make changes all year long. One thing I decided mid 2017 was to become more involved in my Philatelic endeavours. A goal was to increase my knowledge and to make new friends and acquaintances in the hobby. Joining this forum was one of the steps I took and I am glad I did it. It has been only a few months and I am reaping the benefits in many ways. I want to add more to forum discussions and participate more often. Members have been most generous in sharing info and helping out. An overall goal for the year is to put more time into organization and cataloging my collection. I will look towards fellow members for ongoing inspiration.

Steve ( tomiseksj), thanks for renaming the thread so that we can keep contributing to it, and thanks to Mike ( coastalcollector) for kicking things off and to Frog ( firstfrog2013) for quoting your own last year's resolutions to see how you did and where you want to go. Kudos to all! As for me, in 2017, I was only able to stop buying more stamps for 3 months or so, rather than 6, but I did stop approvals from coming, so I think I earned partial credit there. I wrote more than one article for the TSF Newsletter, so I exceeded my goal there. I didn't really do much trading, but I did organize a number of countries: Algeria, Australia, Austria, Baden, Belgium, Canada, Danish West Indies, India, Indian Feudatory States, Japan, Lagos, Montenegro, North West Pacific Islands, Straits Settlements, Sweden, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia.... For 2018, I plan to: - Submit at least two articles for the TSF Newsletter
- Sort, organize, and mount in albums more countries than I did in 2017
- Offer the 2nd Annual Uncle Bill's Giveaway in Dec-2018
There's plenty to keep me busy there, as I was slow to realize just how much material I acquired from my Dad. Anyway, I am looking forward to 2018, and to having a better year overall than 2017. TSF was one of the notable bright spots in 2017, and I hope to keep it that way. |

Since this is my first year, I can't say if I kept any resolutions from last year since I didn't actually make any. But for this year:
1. Start the restoration on my original Savannah, Ga. Postal Bicycle that was given to me.
2. Organize my Ohio & Georgia Revenue Collections much better.
3. Get rid of 1/4 of my stamps. (I have way too many that I will never do anything with, like Prexies.)
4. Get back to my US Regular collection.
5. Sort & Organize my wife's FDC collection for her.
6. Enjoy life, it is much too short for all of us.
