A fortunate thing with this horrendously cold weather we are experiencing is that it gives my the excuse to stay inside and get some stamp work done. I have managed to get a bit of reading and research done. A few more pages of stamps have been mounted.

I see I did not make any resolutions for 2017, which is just as well as I spent so much time with Doctors and specialists as well as extra trips to the UK to sort and then sell my Childhood home. It was a very long and frustrating year. But ever the optimist, I am now going to make a few resolutions for this year. These include............... 1). Spending more time on the forum and boring you all with my Cinderella fetish !! 2). Cut back on my collecting topics/countries to around 5 or 6. (One topic will be revealed in the upcoming Newsletter !) 3). Sell off, giveaway or trade those items I no longer want (or need). 4). (From Jan 6th) be nice to all those collectors who are going Bananas with joy over the new GB 'Game of Thrones' issue. 5). Decide once and for all if I am going to keep or dispose of my only remaining Postage stamp collection, The Flags !! 6). If the decision at No.5 is to dispose, then act upon it !! 7). To continue replacing all those 'lost' images here on the forum. Having managed to get them all to the new Image site I had to have a break !! I guess i will fail on one or more but if I can succeed on one or more come the years end, then it can be deemed a success !! Londonbus1

I suppose my goals for the New Year start out in similar fashion to yours: I have envelopes full of acquisitions which I need to go through and sort, identify, and decide what to keep and what to move along. I need to get more of these stamps mounted in my albums so that I can more easily see what I have.... For 2018, I plan to: - Submit at least two articles for the TSF Newsletter
- Sort, organize, and mount in albums more countries than I did in 2017
- Offer the 2nd Annual Uncle Bill's Giveaway in Dec-2018
There's plenty to keep me busy there, as I was slow to realize just how much material I acquired from my Dad. Anyway, I am looking forward to 2018, and to having a better year overall than 2017. TSF was one of the notable bright spots in 2017, and I hope to keep it that way. Now that the first month of 2018 is behind us, I thought it would be a good time to see how I am doing on my philatelic resolutions. I have already written one article for the TSF Newsletter, but I had hoped to have 2 done by now. So, I have made some progress, but still more to do there. I am away from home once again, but I do have my stamps of India and New Zealand with me, so I need to get going today and work on cataloguing those. I did finally start a stamp inventory list to track new items as I acquire them, and to retroactively list what I already have. That will be a work in progress, but at least it is going. Finally sent out the last shipments of the 1st Uncle Bill's Giveaway in January, so that one is closed out. Now I need to spend more time going through my Dad's old material and get it organized for the 2018 edition. So, I am making some progress on my goals for the new year, but not as far along at this point as I had hoped.

i did manage to accomplish a number of small projects with the goal of making a better organized work area. Toughest thing is the priority of tasks. I am working towards getting images online. A lower priority when ever I glance at the boxes of unorganized stamps.
Been able to participate in many exchanges and giveaways.
Thanks to members of the Forum, i have been able to read and self educate on a new variety of stamping information.

Hello everyone, here are some of my belated 2018 philatelic resolutions & questions : 1-It is time for me to learn more about postmarks and cancellations (early cancels, date stamps, killer cancels ... ) , i am mainly interested first in G.B & USA ( 1870 to 1930's ) -Can anyone reference some materials i can start reading and using ? 2-I have a small collection (+-500 stamp full of duplicates ) of USA stamps dating between 1870 and 1930, all used/canceled/different perfs/coil stamps/different paper... I've tried many times to sort out the collection by specific years of issue but i always get frustrated and I put it on hold !!So finally i ended up sorting everything by design temporarily (ex/ all Washington 5c blue with same design are together and so on for the others ) . I am really enjoying sorting and identifying this US collection(using Scott2013&hobbizine price list..) and i don't mind spending hours trying to find secret marks, watermarks, triangle types and measurements like any other unchecked country in my collection. But when I reach the Washington&Franklin series of 1908-1922 (150 duplicate of 5c with different shades of Blue/ 57 of 2c with diff shades of Carmine / 30 of 1c diff shades of Green etc etc... ) this is where I completely Shut down and I get overwhelmed by the different variations within the same designs over the years !! I know that dabbling with these series can be really challenging, especially for someone with very limited experience like myself, but i made it one of my 2018 philatelic resolutions to finish organizing this collection (by years and not by catalogue#) and to learn more about US postal history. -I would appreciate any recommendations and guidance on how to deal with the Washington&Franklin series? -Also any general tips on cataloguing & organizing early US stamps would be very helpful? I am moving to Africa(Zambia) in April, i was planning on only taking with me two empty stock books/tweezers/loop for stamp hunting in Zambia&South Africa and online offcourse , but now I think that am also going to take the US collection to slowly work on while i am there . 3- Adding new materials for my focused collections and adopt new interest areas to build up my collection . Regards&Thanks, Bombadil

Bombadil,I offer no help but your dilemma with those early Waashingtons/Franklins is the exact reason I collect Canada.I used to help my Mom with these issues and at young age realized it was beyond my interest level.Solution to her dismay was to abandon the U.S. and collect Canada. The shock of the Centennial issue of Canada was a rude awakening for me.Hope someone can help us both as Mom left her U.S. to me and now I must re-learn about these issues again.

Thanks for making a detailed post on your philatelic goals for 2018, Bombadil! That's quite a list you have there. I have a classic U.S. collection myself, although I have not done much with it in recent years. I also have some literature on identifying U.S. stamps which may help you. I am away on travel right now, but I should be back home later this week. Once I am home again, I will look through what I have and will PM you a list of publications that I can share. I am sure that there is something there that will be of use to you. I have to admit that when it comes to classic U.S., I am mostly with firstfrog2013 on that: I also find the Washington-Franklin issues to be daunting and to a certain extent, beyond my level of interest. I think that in the end, that's why I have focused on worldwide to 1930 rather than continuing with my U.S. collection. Anyway, I will PM you later this week with more info. And congrats on the move to Zambia! I hope it will be a good one for you! It seems that we will both be starting our expatriate adventures at the same time.

My advice for dealing with the Washington-Franklins is to breathe deeply, accept that you'll be frustrated, and take numerous breaks! tomiseksj , I appreciate that advice and all the links/references you provided . Thank you,

Today I woke up renewed.I'm quite determined to start filling holes on those missing five hole officals, the problem with these is budget constraints.I'll be mounting one stamp per month for quite some time. What do I do for the other 29 3/4 days?

OK, Bombadil, I have scanned some reference material for you on the Washington-Franklins, which I think will help you to identify and organize the stamps. This is the same book which I have used for doing that. You should be receiving an e-mail in the next 20 minutes telling you that the files are ready to be retrieved. I hope these will help!

Now I need to spend more time going through my Dad's old material and get it organized for the 2018 edition. So, I am making some progress on my goals for the new year, but not as far along at this point as I had hoped. My good friend Jad ( Bombadil ) always said that quoting yourself in a post is pretty lame, and for the most part, I think he is right. But for the New Year's resolutions, it seems reasonable to me, since a good starting place can be taking a look at how you did for the year just ending. Looking back on my three main goals for 2018, I am pleased to say that I did finally submit 2 articles for the Newsletter, although that came down to the wire, and I did offer the big giveaway as planned. Due to the move to France and starting to work full-time again, however, I did almost nothing on the sorting, organization, and mounting of my stamps. I have done more in the past few days than I have done in the past 8 months! For 2019, I am planning to: - Finish sending out all 2nd Annual Uncle Bill's packets by end of Jan-2019
- Submit at least 2 more articles to the TSF Newsletter
- Attend the Stockholm show with Londonbus1 in Jun-2019
- Figure out a focused plan to organize some material from my collection while in France
- Offer a 3rd Annual Uncle Bill's Giveaway in Dec-2019, but consider changing the format
Well, that's my list for now. I had intended to keep it focused on only 2-3 items, but hopefully these 5 will be manageable. I know that Peter ( brightonpete ) already said that he doesn't believe in goals for the New Year, but for anyone else out there thinking about it, I for one, would be happy to know your philatelic plans for 2019! Happy New Year & Good Stamping in 2019! -Chris

I usually accomplish more if I do not have "set" plans so 2019 will be the same. With good health, it should permit me to finish Chile (in a few hours) and get back to Brazil, complicated, but I have necessary help and expect some "dups" !!!!!!!! a chore - I have to spend some time reviewing my Canada Large and Small Queens and I have the books/references to do that.....measure-shades-perfs-books.......!! Patience !!! René

It's my first year here to, so nothing to look back at. I restarted collecting this year (2018) and have made myself a "stamp cave". Here is the list 1. Decide one or two areas to specialize in. 2. Get more organized. 3. Don't take on to manny stamp exchanges (they are time stealers, but nice to get new stamps for "free"). 4. Mount stamps in my 1840-1940 Europa album 5. Reduce the huge amount of duplicates piling up everywhere. 6. Post more at TSF 7. Get rid of some "pounds" or Kg. (want to participate in bicycle races again) 8. Try to fill in those open gaps in the Norway and Sweden collections. 9. Tidy up the "Stamp Cave" The "stamp Cave" 1
The "stamp Cave" 2

Accomplishments - greatly expanded my British Commonwealth collection (mostly KGV to 1980) on Steiner pages - contributed to the Tagging Project on stampsmarter.com - ended up with a complete set of Scott catalogs - inventoried the collection in Stamp Manage inventory software - lack of completeness got me to buy the catalogs - found easy to add catalog numbers to PDF's - started creating custom album page to add varieties - made some new friends on the forums
Some goals - continue my worldwide British Commonwealth collection - dispose of some duplicates accumulated in purchase of collections - restart looking at my US stamps with a focus on tagging varieties - find some method to include cheat sheets in my Steiner album. I would like to use left side of album page since it is always blank - do more work on US mini-sheet collection by adding labels to protective sheets - move into new stamp room..just needs the final inspection by local government and add carpet (not required to pass inspection) - have a 4 or 5 inch (100mm-125mm) stack of album pages (stamps double sided) from an super thick album I purchased of worldwide stamps that I do not collect (Spain, Germany, etc) that need to find a home. They appear to be very common.

Well as stated earlier I will in memory of Mom start working on the U.S. collection.I can live with myself if I still work on finishing the Canadian excise tax issue and working on a few more OA's.
I still have a carpenter project at camp and that one will happen too.
I'm going to add an island at the apartment soon.
I'm going to replace all my saw blades. Not as silly as it sounds I always start working and say they need replacing but never do that.
Finish planting my orchard or at least work on it.

New Years greetings to all Forum members.
generally i do not make New Years resolutions. I find they seem to set me up for failure. If I do make a resolution, it is not at the first of the year.
i had resolved to get my stamping area better organized and I did manage that.
i wish I had more time to do some stamping. Will try to get more time in stamp “room”

Apart from miniscule successes with Nos.1&7, I have failed miserably on all counts !! I envisage a few tough months during the coming year so best I not make any resolutions. I never set up resolutions because I never seem to accomplish them. But this year may change.
1)Finally get all my US stamps in the new albums (Ameican Heirloom from Mystic) I bought 4 years ago. 2)Get my vegetable garden in this year. Do to health problems I was unable to last year and my granddaughter (farmer's helper) was very disappointed. 3)Try to sell off or giveaway some of the duplicates taking up space. 4)Soak all of the stamps in the bottomless box.

My 2019 goal is to spend $25 each paycheck on stamps and continue to complete my US collection. With the latest eBay purchases, all of the 1980s will be complete, and I can work on the 1990s.

My 2019 goal is to simply spend some time with my collection and on TSF. I've been doing nothing but work for a year (so it seems anyway) so taking an hour here and there to sort and catalogue some stamps is quite a bit of fun.
My "collection" as it stands today is 3-4 false starts (built over 25 years) in various binders and stock books, plus a very large shoebox full of club auction lots and other packets. So if I make meaningful progress merging all this into one organized group of Vario/Steiner pages I'll be very happy. Right now the organized part is in 6 binders so I'm getting there.
And if I can check in here every week to catch up with you all, I'll be very happy too.

It is Czechoslovakia I have to redo (at least the old ones) since I have "problems" with the Wmks ! and have over 1,300 stamps inventoried but some I left in the original books, numbered and more recent....bought by my late dad. I will check the Steiner Pages and probably replace all the pages of Vol 1 Scott's International. After that, yes for Large Queens and Small Queens redo....already in Custom pages (once I finish, will probably replace the existent custom Pages) But before all this, I might (today) buy #1-2-3 Cook Islands....waiting for the dealer to call me back - all this the fault of @falshung René
