I had been using Photoshop (paid subscription), but it seems they can no longer verify my subscription (although I'm still being charged monthly -- I'll cancel the subscription once I determine there's no way I can keep using it on my older machine).
I've been learning to use GIMP instead, which I've come to like very much, but haven't figured how to draw a square or a circle yet on an image. (But I was able to crop and create this composite image with it, so that's progress!)
I also use Irfanview for some things as well, where it seems to do certain tasks better than GIMP or Photoshop.

I need counseling....
OK, I may have spotted the difference. The serpent who's head ends up on the right, the 'center' body section that coils around the staff below the serpent head on felt. The section of wing that fills the area between the serpent body and staff has 4 feathers, although 3 rd from outside is a weak single line. with no line , inside feather seems by itself (?) (from left to right)
Row 1 #2 3rd feather "almost missing, but a trace of the line between feathers 1,2 and 4. Others weak, but have more of a trace
Row 2 all seem to have some level of all feather
Row 3, #4 3rd feather appears to be missing!
R0w 4, 3rd feather some portion is present
Row 5 - #3 missing 3rd feather
Row 6 - all seem to have some part of a 3rd feather
what do you think?
I'll get a close-up tomorrow and post...enough stamping for one day!
Cheers Stan

side by side, with what I hope shows the difference between a Type I and Type II, at least this seems to be closer to the translation from Yvert & Tellier On left Type I, on right Type II/ Last night I had called out two images, but upon fresh eyes and higher resolution, only one seems to fit the description. If anyone has comments or a different take on this, please comment! I don't consider myself expert by any means in these things The majority of the lot of 30+ stamps that I have all look similar.same as the stamp on the left

so to wrap up the Mercury series (excluding the Liberation overprints) Just missing a few! *** Admin perhaps move all Mercury related messages to a separate thread so folks who are not specifically looking at these stamps, don't have to scroll through them?) and the 2nd series.... outside the "Classic" year range, but a part of this stamp series and here's the flawed stamp, maybe nmot really a "plate flaw" but iyt seems more than just foreign debris during printing.... also E in POSTES has broken top bar, but this is apretty minor flaw also not sure why they asdded an S to the end of Francaise on the 2nd series??? (anybody know) happy stamping!

In French, the adjective has to agree in number and gender with the noun. So "Française" is also singular when referring to "République", but plural, with an extra "s", when referring to "Postes".

The London forgery of the Iris 1f50 definitive on the right with clearer lettering and differences to the ornamental band of the torch (the secret mark) alongside an original version from 1939 (Vichy printings varied considerably in colour). The forgeries were issued to French freedom fighters from 1940 onwards across several stamps. In a 1947 article in Stamp Magazine, Raoul Lesgor suggests that differences were secret marks so that the resistance could recognise communications. See here

Starting to go back through the Pétain issues after reading the link Daniel posted- I have not found anything definitive ( I do not think), but after a closer inspection I pulled these out of a total of 24 stamps- Ifyou think my conclusion incorrect PLEASE speak out! The forgeries are said to have clearer and better engraved leaves and inscriptions, Pétain's headline is broken in 2 places above the ears (?), the 2 and the F are different in shape ansd solid, whereas the originals have a thin white (uninked) line inside the 2 and F. The example shown in the link also looks to have much more shading of the jaw in the forgery below the ear... From left to right; (double click on image and you should get a larger view) 1- although leaves and inscriptions all seem pretty clear, 2 and F have the thin lines inside, the extraneous lines in the denomination box, and the horizontal lin ebelow the image frame (left of Bersier seems not all that uncommon likely original 2 - nice and cleanlines in denomination - original 3 - the 2 and F have the lnternal line, but the shape of each is a bit , almost a dip in the top bar of the F and the serfis of both bars has added 'flourish", the base of the 2 almost runs into the F and right edge of denomination box is 'rough" and while there are 2 breaks in the horizontal shading on Pétais head just about above the ears.... not sure this qualifies, Thus far inscription leaves look about the same to me. 4 - 2 and F have internal lines , but base of 2 lacks the upcurve at end, and there is a horizontal mark below the image frame, but more a single straight line 5- almost solid 2 and F, inscription however is missing the F in Fracaises (and part of the R), line below image frame similar to #1 a forgery of a flaw? #3-#5 seem to be 'maybes", all other stamps (not shown) had the internal lines in the denomination (and lacked the extra lines and such)

thanks daniel I'd say mine are just engraving irregularities.. although #2 now look slike a possibility.... and maybe notI'll mount the one missing the F and most of the R, but the rest back in the envelope labeled "518" I'm taking a break from Pétain... I have made the pages 3 times (and added mounts) 1st time discovered some color variations I thought worthy of showing and one on yellow-brown paper... which increased 2 pages to 3. Printed those, looked at them, put on mounts, started inserting stamps and found errors..... so i have corrected, printed out on plain paper , and will look at in the morning one more time before printing out on the vellum stock and adding mounts.... tomorrow is another day

From Maury Ceres & Dallay (translated from French) Yvert # 338 Lilac 338a Purple (Violet) instead of lilac 338b Purple (Violet) - Gray (printed 1/14/1938) The purple-gray variety (due to the absence of one of the pigments used in the usual ink composition) only affects part of the January 14 print. Certain purple stamps have a color very close to this violet-gray which can only be seen in UV rays. It is rare and difficult to detect (indispensible expertise) here stainlessb, Discussions about color variations have drawn my attention to my French stamps, which I haven't checked in a few years Unfortunately I only have one YT 338 stamp. I tried to compare it with other French violet and lilas stamps. I also have difficulty identifying and that's why I turn to the Michel Color Guide. It seems that French "lilas" is very different from German "lila" ( ) I compared the stamp with the color violet and violet gray (dark) I think it's violet-gray. ( ) That would be a nice surprise.

Is there a color catalog for modern (French) stamps and colors? I found a "Nuancier" but I think it only refers to the classic French stamps.

My Cérès catalog list 4 shades for the Mermoz 3Fr issue YT#338: "violet", 338a: "lilas-rose", 338b: "violet foncé", 338c: "violet gris". These would translate as "purple", "pink lilac", dark purple", and "grayish purple".
I also only have the #338 shade. Hope this helps!

gstampsIf you go back to the #8 tab for this thread and scroll down, you will find the two examples of Mermoz, looking at hrdoktorx list of 4 colors, I would revise my earlier 2021 description (based on the 2 choices by Mary Ceres & Dallay). to now purple and dark purple I would think the "pink lilac" would be much lighter with more red tones, while the "grayish purple" would tend to be a much duller tone, I haven't looked at these since they were mounted, but will now put it back on my list in case I should see one that looks more pinkish (or duller...) This is an example of where the different "experts" vary on their descriptions and identifications- also, I have long suspected the SG color key is more based on GB stamps and much gets lost in the translation from descriptions of colors which likely date back many many years very subjective!

Hi hrdoktorx It would be helpful to have Michel's catalog with German color names for this stamp. In German there is the color "purpur" (English "purple"?) and the color "violet" (as in French) There is a big difference between them, they can't be confused I also compared my stamp with the "purpur" version I came to the old conclusion that I am unable to identify colors (with or without color catalog)

I found this purple-gray variety on ebay. It is now obvious that none of the stamps posted in this thread are purple-gray.

I would translate the German "purpur" as "pourpre", at least in common parlance. However, that is not a color denomination that Yvert & Tellier catalogs use.

In the last few days I have been viewing my French stamp collection. I stopped collecting them 3 years ago and I don't know what the market is anymore. I tried to win the auction for a batch of 8 Napoleon III stamps of 30 and 80c. I didn't want to give more than 16 Euros. Were they worth more?

IMHO, it's currently a sellers market. Over this past year+ things have really seemed to 'take off'. At face value, the eight stamps would have a Y&T 2021 CV of 220 Euro, however that CV is for stamps that are well centered- and from what I can see, only two of the 30 centimes seem well centered- the others are not so much. The 30c also, all appear to be on paper, which for me is only a plus if the complete cancelation can be seen and the obliteration is clear. These four would be stamps I would likely soak to remove from paper.
Unless there is something "special" about a stamp, I generally would not go much beyond 15% of CV, maybe 20% if it was a "knockout" or one I really rteally needed to complete a series.
Having said that I might have bid a bit more (maybe ~20 Euros, but only if I needed them).
my 2 cents

Thanks stainlessb. I started the auction 4 minutes before the end and the price increased from 8 to 16 Euros. I liked the cancellation of the 80c stamp on the right (anchor-which I later found in the YT catalog rated starting at 15 Euro) I think it would have been worthwhile to continue with the auction.

I did not catch the anchor cancel... not the most clear, but they are not common!
and it seems most auctions jump right at the end if the bid has stayed at a low or reasonable value. I recently lost 2 pages of Ceres with nice cancellations (including several anchors). I sat at$54 for the last 6 minutes with a max bid of $62.11 and at the very end it went for $64.40, which seemed off as it used to seem after a certain point the bid had the change by a minimum increment
keep trying, who knows we may end up bidding against each other!

It's been a whirlwind week, but I can finally devote some time to recent stamp arrivals. Here I got a new variant of the YT#16, French Empire Napoléon III, 40c orange. From left to right, I think I have: YT #16 ( jaune-orange, orange yellow), YT#16a ( orange vif, bright orange), and YT#16b ( orange sur paille, orange on yellowish paper).
