Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908),painter,poet and author is another "inventor" of of the cartoons. His most popular cartoon-story,first published in 1865,is "Max und Moritz". Possibly the best known (and best sold) peace of literature in and of Germany. Published and translated into more than 300 languages and dialects.
It is the story of two naughty boys and the tricks they inflict on variuos adults. The story ends in a today "political incorrect" brutal way: Max and Moritz are caught and milled to feed the poultry of the miller.
Stamps issued Jan.9th,1958,commemorating the 50th death-anniversary of Busch.

Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908),painter,poet and author is another "inventor" of of the cartoons. I struggle a fair bit with German, it's not a mother tongue for me and I'm not at all fluent, but I do have some German-language books in my library which I have picked up during various trips to Germany. Since I'm a Wilhelm Busch fan, one of them is this book. You can see Max & Moritz at the top (before they were ground up and fed to the birds). And on the left side is Die Fromme Helene, who also features on a German stamp - hopefully Werner will show us that stamp in the near future. I'm pretty sure I've seen the remaining character on a German stamp as well, Herr Lehrer Lämpel the teacher ... Ryan

3 Belgian sheets honouring Hergé's creation Tintin and other Belgian comic book characters. Tintin Duostamps, French and Dutch language Tintin weekly comic versions (2016) and an imperforate sheet from 2012 featuring Tintin and several other comic book characters including the Smurfs, Lucky Luke and Blake and Mortimer. Here's another miniature sheet featuring Tintin. This time featured on a first day cover and issued by Guinea-Bissau on 10th March 2008 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the 1957 Treaty of Rome which came into effect on 1st January 1958. The treaty established the European Economic Community and Guinea-Bissau issued 2 miniature sheets for each of the six countries who were the original signatories, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. This particular sheet honours Jules Bordet, Peter Paul Rubens, Georges Prosper Remi and Peter Brueghel. All fine except that George Remi, better known as HERGE, the creator of Tintin died in 1983 and, so, his work was still in copyright. Permission was not sought to feature his creation and nor was it granted retrospectively. Remi's widow and her new husband are very protective of the Tintin brand. So, it was necessary to remove the George Remi stamp from all of the sheets. Clearly, some escaped and this example is doubly rare since it is an imperforate version. The official Guinea-Bissau website only shows the other 3 stamps from this sheet. Scan_20210321 by Daniel, on Flickr

Issue from the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2001 to commemorate 70 years since the publication of Tintin au Congo, a joint issue with Belgium. Note the "(c) HERGE ML 2001" in the top left corner which means that this issue was officially sanctioned, unlike the Guiné-Bissau example we saw above in this thread.

Issue from the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2001 to commemorate 70 years since the publication of Tintin au Congo, a joint issue with Belgium. This cartoon nearly started a war between Canada & Belgium! Well, maybe it would have if a few million more people here voted for satirical parties .... The Rhinoceros Party is a long-standing satirical political party here in Canada. Once upon a time they announced an intention (if they were voted into power) to declare war on Belgium due to the killing of a rhinoceros in this comic, with the war to be called off only if Belgium would apologize by giving them a case of beer and some mussels. The Belgian ambassador then sent over some beer & mussels for the Rhino Party. ha ha Other Rhino Party policies include repealing the law of gravity, overcoming our pipeline shortage by shipping oil via blimp ("what could go wrong?") and putting the national debt on a credit card. This comic has been extensively researched and Tintin in the Congo is one of the English Wikipedia gold star articles. Ryan

Mike ( mikeclevenger ) showed the pane these two stamps are from in an earlier post but I want to share this First Day cover and its pictorial postmark. The Marvel Comics Superheroes pane (Scott 4159) was issued on July 26th at the 2007 Comic-Con held in San Diego, California that year. The Spider-Man themed self-adhesive stamps on the cover, serpentine die cut 10½ x 10¾, are identified as Scott 4159a (upper) and 4159k (lower). The cachet on the cover was designed by William E. Smith, Jr. of Minnesota. His cachet line is called William II and it is abbreviated as WII (info just learned on another forum).

This is actually a very nice cover for a Marvel stamp. I have been looking for other cachet makers for these, and I have only found 3 different ones so far, and have never seen any marked WII. Thanks for the info Steve, as I can now look for these.
Have a great day. Mike.

Not technically a cartoon or comic book character, but still... "Le Petit Prince" celebrating here 75 years of publication. Still a favourite for all young-at-heart francophile readers:

Abkhazia is considered an autonomous republic by Georgia but is not widely recognised as such. Either way, these Tintin stamps are probably bogus.
