From the APS blog:
Compex 2017 is being held on the weekend before Memorial Day, May 19, 20, and 21, at the Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois (Chicago area). Hours of the show are: Friday and Saturday — 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
Compex 2017 (Combined Philatelic Exhibition of Chicagoland) is comprised of nine Chicago area clubs holding their individual exhibits under the same roof at the same time. Member clubs of Compex 2017 will presents a wide variety of exhibits for the viewing pleasure of all in attendance.
For the second time, Collectors Club of Chicago members have been invited to provide a special section of exhibits at Compex. At present, CCC members will have approximately 150 frames of exhibits on display. Please be sure to view these exhibits in addition to the Compex club exhibits that will be on display. There will be something of interest for everyone to see.
This year’s theme is, “Honoring the United States Armed Forces.” The show will have a total of approximately 180 frames of exhibits. Be sure to see the 10-frame special exhibit highlighting the show theme with a potpourri of American military mail from World War I in the Collectors Club of Chicago section.
Cachet prices are: Show-canceled cachet: $2 each; Set of 3 (one per day): $5; blank cachets: $.75 each. Cachets may be ordered by mail (add $1.00 for postage and handling – or an SASE) from: Compex 2017 Cachets, 7139 West Higgins, Chicago, IL 60656.
The cancel design submitted to the Post Office for use at the USPS station at the show, notes the 60th anniversary of the annual stamp show; the key graphic element is the show logo, consisting of the intertwined letters of the show’s name. This was created by Samuel Ray, a prominent Chicago philatelist and an expert at writing up exhibits for other philatelists.
The cachet for Compex 2017 carries out the theme of the show: “Honoring the United States Armed Forces.” While many US stamps have noted the actions and contributions of the armed forces, depicting battles, great military leaders and heroes, etc., the cachet focuses on the millions of men and women who have served in the armed forces — using the “generic faces” depicted on the 1952 3-cent stamp honoring service women [Scott 1013] and on the 1955 3-cent stamp honoring the armed forces reserves [Scott 1067].
Once again, the show will have its traditional Youth/Beginners’ Booth with free stamps and activities for young collectors, whether they are new to the hobby or already working on collections. Information about collecting is also available for those wanting to get started in the hobby, regardless of age.
A bourse of approximately 50 dealer booths will be participating to fill the needs of all levels of collecting interests. In addition to our philatelic dealers, we are including postcard dealers. We will also have one cachetmaker included in the bourse. There will also be one booth with a cachetmaker.
In addition to the dealers, the United States Postal Service and the United National Postal Administration with participate with their respective postal products available for purchase.
This year, Compex will host a workshop by the Midwest Bank Note Study Group of the U. S. Philatelic Classics Society on Saturday, May 20, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. The workshop will focus on various aspects of collecting this interesting issue. All are welcome to attend this workshop.
Several local area clubs will be holding their society meetings during the show, including the Chicago Philatelic Society with a program by Tom Horn, APS Special Projects, who will present a discussion on the status of the APS Chapter Ambassador program; The Chicagoland Chapter No. 5, Germany Philatelic Society; The Scandinavian Collectors Club, Chicago Chapter #4; Baden-Powell Philatelic Association of Illinois; and the Illinois Postal History Society. Other societies have not finalized their plans and will be announced at a later date. Please check the official show program for details regarding speakers, times, etc.
