Well, since my list would rival the thickest telephone directory (do they still print those?), maybe I should limit that to "stamp collecting errors in judgment." At least I wasn't alone when I put my faith (and my mint stamps) in this product:

I looked at those back in the `60s but I couldn`t afford them.

I had used those but I do not recall much discussion about why they were bad in those days.

Well, since my list would rival the thickest telephone directory (do they still print those?), maybe I should limit that to "stamp collecting errors in judgment." At least I wasn't alone when I put my faith (and my mint stamps) in this product: I hear you, Bobby! In the 1970s, I also used Crystal Mounts for my mint stamps, as I liked the look of them better than the Showgard mounts, which were a new product at that point, if I recall correctly. I think that Crystal Mounts may have been the first alternative to hinges, as the trend for mint never-hinged stamps was just gaining favor at the time. In my case, I was saved by the lack of availability of the Crystal Mounts. The local stamp shop where I used to buy them stopped offering them after awhile, so I switched to the Showgard mounts. I had heard that the problem with Crystal Mounts was that after long-term use, the gum on mint stamps was prone to discoloration. I never had any long-term experience myself, as I switched over after just a couple of years of using the Crystal Mounts.

OK, here is one I'll bet many of you who began collecting when very young can identify with: affixing stamps to album pages with acetate tape! Oh, yeah, I was one smart cookie! Those dadgum hinges were just too much trouble, and good ol' Scotch tape seemed just the ticket. And it worked! The stamps were firmly attached, didn't come loose and fall from the album page, and looked great. Hmmmmm, but when I tried to remove a stamp, well, you know the answer to that one; tore the sucker into pieces. And on top of that, the discovery that the "sticky stuff" was very acidic and stained the stamps? Well, you know the rest. Very dumb idea!

Don't remember making this mistake myself but did see a few friends do this.

I'll tell you the latest old guy thing that somehow keeps happening.I carefully insert the stamp into mount and trim it with the cutter to precise size. Then I set it aside and get out the proper album and open it to the right page. Now where is that stamp?Nope not under the album ,not on the table top,not on the floor.I have to walk away for five minutes then return. Now where is the stamp right there in plain sight.Like I need this to make me feel less than intelligent?Probably three times per week I go through this whole episode.
