So what can anyone tell me about U.S. documentary stamps? Specifically, series 1942 stamps, as they have that imprinted on the face. I recently came across a warrantee deed that belong to my late great aunt. It's dated 9-14-42, and it has a number of doc stamps affixed. three 10c, one 5c, one 50c, and one $3 stamp. I know nothing about doc stamps, so I'm looking for a bit of education. I'll post a scan later if anyone is interested in seeing the document. img free

Documentary stamps are revenue stamps. From the Civil War through the 1960's taxes had to be paid using revenue stamps. Primarily these were done through paying a tax on certain transactions, which were often if not always documented with forms, tickets, contracts or other documents. The appropriate tax was paid by buying the appropriate stamps, affixing them to document and then having them cancelled. The Scott Specialized Catalog of United States Stamps and Covers lists almost all federal revenue stamps. Tax stamps were not just issued for documents but a wide array of businesses and licences.

I'm guessing that these were relatively common at the time they were used?

I'm guessing that these were relatively common at the time they were used? I have quite a few of the dated documentary stamps like you show with various years overprinted on them. I certainly haven't come across much with a high face value, though. Your $3 1942 stamp has a catalogue value that's well above what I get with my piles of stuff collecting methods - $3.25 on my 2016 Scott USA Specialized. I only ever seem to come across the real low-value revenues, anything interesting has been picked out long ago! I think it's sort of like collecting precancels. Somebody else always finds the good stuff before I get my hands on anything. Drat & blast. One of my main complaints about revenue stamps is that so often I don't know what they're used for. Postage stamps are pretty easy to figure out but revenue stamps make me scratch my head. I've saved this link as a good introduction to the various classes of US revenue stamps. Ryan

They are most desirable on document (as they are in your example). Still they were used throughout the country and are rather common.

Wow! Those newspaper stamps are pretty!
I wasn't really expecting that my doc stamps were worth much...didn't care. Not selling them anyway. I thought the $3 stamp might be a bit more rare than the others. I'll find a place in my collection for this entire document and keep it intact. My aunt would have wanted it that way. This can be my toe dipping into the revenue stamp pool.

...This can be my toe dipping into the revenue stamp pool. Be careful; there is an eddy in that pool that can pull you under before you realize what is happening to you!

The high values are generally more valuable. In this case the high value of the series is $1000 with a used with cancellation catalog value of $200.

I've reached a plateau with my U.S. stamps in recent years. I'm getting to the point where I only need the expensive stuff, and I keep up on the new releases. That's why I started a Canada album about 10 years ago, and a Great Britain album last year. Maybe I need to start looking at revenues as another outlet. Once I get Canada up to date, that is. And my worldwide stuff. GB is still new, I've got it up to date. My wife looks at it all and just shakes her head.
