Parachute mail cover from Julian, California. Because the town is in the mountains, a special flight could not land there, so a load of mail was parachuted in.

If you happened to have read my Hometown Collection article in the current issue of the Forum's Newsletter (p.11) you should understand my excitement at finding this cover (as well as why I paid far more than its market value to ensure it would be added to my collection).

Cicero, IllinoisMay 19, 1938 A recurring theme in my collecting experience seems to be overpaying for an item that I've never seen before and then another comes along shortly thereafter that can be obtained at a fraction of the cost. Here is another addition to my hometown and NAMW collections.

I am laughing because I thought that was just me! Happened a lot when I was beginning to explore Japan material that was non-Scott listed. I try to justify it by saying it's simply the "tuition" cost of learning about an area. (But I don't always buy that argument, even from myself!)

Here is another addition to my hometown and NAMW collections. Well, Steve, if it makes you feel any better at all, I think that the other cover that you "way overpaid for" is much nicer than this one, despite the fact that they share some key elements in common. I don't have all of the details, but I think that the earlier example is a much nicer one for your collection. And by the way, I have indeed done the exact same thing as you have described, so now you, Dave ( Philatarium), and I are all members of the club!

Washington, DC May 20, 1938Here is a cover postmarked at the District's Flagship Station that was flown from the Nation's capital. Notice that the sender marked the face of the cover at upper left with the annotation "Mailed on airship open for inspection May 15-21 inc." Further, the cover's recipient had apparently moved from Davenport to Aledo, Illinois. The cover's reverse reveals that the envelope was American Airlines stationery -- it contains the sender's name and address, an American Airlines national air mail week event cachet, and a Davenport, Iowa receiving mark.

San Diego, California May 15, 1938Although the cover bears a marking that it is a first day cover, the 6 cent air mail stamp (Scott C23) was issued on May 14, 1938. San Diego's NAMW cachet highlights that the World's first sea plane flight was by Glenn Curtiss from San Diego Bay on January 26, 1911.

This was sent to my great-grandfather (who originally had the collection that I started with). When my grandmother passed away 10 years ago I found this tucked away in her file box under "Miscellaneous Family Stuff".

I have encountered only a few printed cachets such as this one. I just bought a lot of NAMW covers and so will be scanning some soon. I don't believe the printed cachet to be specific to NAMW but rather some form of advertisement for Blytheville and Mississippi County. Blytheville's NAMW cachet was hand stamped to the left of the stamp. I have about 4 or 5 yet to post that have NAMW-specific printed cachets but, as you indicated, they are far less common than those with hand stamped cachets.

Minneapolis, Minnesota May 16, 1938 National Air Mail Week Slogan CancelI suspect that this slogan cancel went into use prior to the start of the National Air Mail Week campaign. The key piece of information for me is that the slogan cancel states that there were 100 Minnesota NAMW towns/cachets. That gives me a goal to reach for.

...The key piece of information for me is that the slogan cancel states that there were 100 Minnesota NAMW towns/cachets. That gives me a goal to reach for... The National Postal Museum's finding guide for the Farley NAMW collection indicates the collection held 102 covers from Minnesota towns. Unfortunately, the guide doesn't contain a listing of the towns that the covers were sent from.

Zumbrota, Minnesota Goodhue County Cachet on handbill This is the best they could come up with for a slogan I guess. Zumbrota is so named because it lies on the Zumbro river.

South Saint Paul, Minnesota Dakota County First FlightIf you aren't familiar with South Saint Paul (which means most everybody) the "Hook-Em-Cow" epithet might seem quite odd. For many years until about 15 years ago, South Saint Paul was home to massive stockyards as it was a major rail stop. In 1916 a booster club was founded called the "Hook-Em-Cows" whose main purpose was to aid in the revitalization of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival/Ice Palace which since 1885 was a festival held in the dead of winter (January/February) whose main feature was an edifice of some kind constructed entirely of ice. The Winter Carnival also features various contests and a treasure hunt for a large medal or coin the finder of which these days gets several thousand dollars as well. This is one of the larger ice palaces from 1986 at 128 feet (39 meters) tall.

Almelund, Minnesota Chisago CountyApparently at least in some locations a courtesy cancel on a cacheted envelope was provided for. Almelund is home of the Land O' Lakes brand which I am pretty sure will only be familiar to those in the region as I doubt they sell nationally.

Antonio ( smauggie), I can add that Land O' Lakes brand is also available in Arizona and California, as it is the brand of butter my wife usually would buy in our home. So, I think it must have expanded since its local beginnings.

Among my collecting interests are aircraft on stamps and covers. The NAMW covers offer a plethora of aircraft on covers and I have collected quite a few over the years. A couple of days ago, I was reviewing the Cinderellas-General forum and noted Londonbus's post of 4/5/18 thestampforum.boards.net/post/54454 and noted the TWA label of a DC-3 in flight. It jogged my memory of this cover with that label as part of its cachet. For me, this was a collectable cover for having an aircraft as a cachet, but also for its use of the 1938 airmail stamp issued especially for NAMW canceled on the last-day of NAMW, and the cachet in the lower right corner commemorating NBC-KYW office building which also housed a postal station.
