As a beginner, I’m still figuring out my collecting interests. I’ve been setting aside stamps that appeal to me, which I recognize as the beginnings of a few topical collections. Here’s a thread for resources related to topical stamp collecting / thematic stamp collecting. Please post about your favorite topical websites, reference materials, suppliers, and any other resources, whether general (like the American Topical Association) or specific (like a website devoted to the alto clef on stamps). I’ll start out with the obvious: The American Topical AssociationThe British Thematic AssociationI plan to add more posts as I explore my own topical interests. Oh, and let me know if you actually come across any stamps featuring an alto clef.

Here are a few other links of possible interest to the topical collector: The American Philatelic Association offers free, downloadable album pages, many of which have a topical theme. The Smithsonian's Arago site has a number of virtual exhibits of topical interests that may provide some ideas to a beginning topical collector. Linns.com has an article on topical collecting in its Refresher course.

I stumbled upon this bare-bones website listing flora and fauna on stamps by taxonomy: Taxonomy of Stamps

I am not really a Topical Stamp Collector but having said that one area that does appeal to me and one that I do have some stamps for is
"Stamps on Stamps"
Some useful links for this topical area are:
Stamps on Stamps Collectors Club www.stampsonstamps.org/
Stamps on Stamps Virtual Collection (a personal page) stampsonstamps.brinkster.net/
This a recent purchase that fits in to "Stamps on Stamps"

I hope I'm not interrupting this thread at all, but I have a question. I'm curious as to what a topical stamp collector is?

Welcome to TSF deniseb :-) A topical collector focuses on specific topics and themes represented by the designed found on postage stamps, postal stationary, postmarks, etc. With such a collection myself, I do not mind the interruption and if your interested and curiosity is piqued, have a gander at the list of potential themes one can explore on the Colnect site here. As well, in addition to the links already shared earlier in the thread, here are a few more that might be useful in answering your question further:
Topical Collecting 101 - short video This video is about Topical Stamp Collecting by the American Topical Association Thematic Philately - John Hayward of the British Thematic Association, explains what Thematics are all about (good lunch time reading)
For a Topical/Thematic collector in the making, find your passion or area of interest and start collecting...
Have fun and enjoy the hunt!
